Historia
Sometimes funny, sometimes harrowing, always moving, Somewhere in the Music, I’ll Find Me is a coming-of-age memoir that illustrates the power of a dream to shape a lifetime, no matter what fate has in store. When Laurie Markvart's brother took her to the big city to experience her first rock concert, Laurie's life was forever changed. The stage, the lights, the heart-pounding sound—then and there, teenage Laurie knew she was made for music. But could she make it with music?

Loved this memoir
Revisado: 03-17-25
Laurie Markvart’s honest memoir is well worth the listen. She writes movingly about personal and difficult moments in her life; at one point I even had a good cry. I strongly recommend this book to everyone but especially to women who want to hear stories of courageous change.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

The best of the series so far
Revisado: 09-01-24
There is no accent that Bronson Pinchot can’t do.
I occasionally have issues listening to the sort of white savior-ism of the times but overall Sinclair was pretty advanced and he gets Lannie into the center of everything. I do wonder if his unvarnished Stalinism will adjust in the final books

Historia
The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another....

Finger Wagging at Martha Dodd not appreciated...
Revisado: 07-19-21
I read this book ten years ago and raved about it. This time I listened to it, and was stunned at the sexist finger wagging directed at Martha Dodd. "Me too" must have sunk in - I did not have this reaction to the first reading. I have no problem with Larsen's criticsm of Martha for her selection of partners, among them several high ranking Nazis, but the fact that she had a large number of partners seems to be the main focus of his criticsm. This now annoys the hell out of me. There is no such criticsm of similarly sexually active men in the book. Amazing the difference a few years made - this really rankled. What's worse, I picked up a copy of Martha Dodd's memoire, THROUGH EMBASSY EYES, at a friend's house and found to my dismay that entire sections were recreated in Larsen's book with almost no changes. I can't tell, since this is an audio book, whether he credits her appropriately, but it seems to me that Martha's careful record keeping was fodder for a lot of IN THE GARDEN OF THE BEASTS. Larsen is happy enough to criticize and demean her AND make money off of her carefully kept memories. This remains an important story, and it is worth the read, but a note to readers/listeners out there: the number of sexual partners a woman has is no one else's business--it doesn't matter if it was a long time ago. The reader's performance seems to underscore the snide "church lady" tone, and furthers the irritation...
