Historia
Actor William Shaksper of Stratford had little education, never left England, and apparently owned no books. How could he have written the great plays and poetry attributed to him? Journalist Mark Anderson's biography offers tantalizing proof that Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, courtier, spendthrift, scholar, traveler, soldier, scoundrel, and writer, was the real "Shakespeare".

Sir Edward's Bones
Revisado: 05-20-21
It feels satisfying to put the flesh back on Sir Edward's bones. At long last we can see the man behind the language that connects whole world. The very soul of English.

This historian speaks with heartfelt passion......
Revisado: 08-07-19
This historian writes and speaks with such heartfelt passion. She buries her fingers into the mud of our past and with her stained fingers, communicates her universal vision, unmarried by prejudice or time. Brilliant.

Historia
Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.

I now understand the curse at the end of Romeo & Juliet. Why it has such force. An excellent exposition of a convoluted history.

Prosecuting attorney in the Manson trial Vincent Bugliosi held a unique insider's position in one of the most baffling and horrifying cases of the 20th century: the cold-blooded Tate-LaBianca murders carried out by Charles Manson and four of his followers. What motivated Manson in his seemingly mindless selection of victims, and what was his hold over the young women who obeyed his orders? Now available for the first time in unabridged audio, the gripping story of this famous and haunting crime is brought to life by acclaimed narrator Scott Brick.

Historia
Since the days of conquistador Hernán Cortés, rumors have circulated about a lost city of immense wealth hidden somewhere in the Honduran interior, called the White City or the Lost City of the Monkey God. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die.

Too long, too long, a tale
Revisado: 05-31-19
Obviously, this must have been life changing for the author. Not so, for the editor. A few cuts here and there would not go amiss. A leaf from Ernest Hemmingway might be a good idea. A tale well told does not have to be riviting on every page. It is like a TV series, wherein the hero saves the world every episode. It rapidly becomes an anodyne adventure. I skipped most of the final chapters, which was a shame, as I'm certain there is something to learn about exotic diseases from someone who has had one. I'd like to read this book with half the words removed. I wanted to know more about the artifacts and less about the author. Thank you.

Shooting Up: A Short History of Drugs and War examines how intoxicants have been put to the service of states, empires, and their armies throughout history. Since the beginning of organized combat, armed forces have prescribed drugs to their members for two general purposes: to enhance performance during combat and to counter the trauma of killing and witnessing violence after it is over.

Searing History
Revisado: 05-25-19
This is an excellent historical survey with a searing. take no prisoners, finish. We may be used to the idea that soldiers used "Dutch Courage" in WWI and for centuries previoously; that GI's in Vietnam used marijuana and heroin but, maybe, we are not so clear about the roles that the military. governments and pharmaceutical industries played in the distribution of drugs before and after the conflicts. This engaging work places the blame for the development and "abuse" of powerful drugs squarely on the shoulders of that triumvirate, where it belongs.
