Historia
From the ashes of World War II, Rome was reborn as the epicenter of film, fashion, creative energy, tabloid media, and bold-faced libertinism that made "Italian" a global synonym for taste, style, and flair. A confluence of cultural contributions created a bright, burning moment in history: it was the heyday of fashion icons such as Pucci and Brioni. Rome's huge movie studio, Cinecitta, attracted a dizzying array of stars, like Charlton Heston, Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner, and Frank Sinatra.

Historia
Stanley Kubrick, the director of a string of timeless movies from Lolita and Dr. Strangelove to A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket, and others, has always been depicted by the media as the Howard Hughes of filmmakers, a weird artist obsessed with his work and privacy to the point of madness. But who was he really?

Revisado: 07-14-22
I have never read/listened to a book like this. Part memoir part biography it is about a life long friendship between two completely different people. They loved each other through a bond that kept getting stronger throughout their lives. It is charming and funny and absurd but it also sheds light on Kubrick and his films in a way that probably no other book could. Reader is great. Loved the experience

On the Upper West Side, a recluse is found murdered in his penthouse apartment, alongside two objects of note: a stolen Vermeer painting and a leather suitcase bearing the initials WHL3. For the first time in years, the authorities have a lead - with the suitcase and painting both pointing them toward one man.

I wanted to like it more than I did
Revisado: 07-29-21
I like this character and the story reminded me of "Tell No One" and I liked that too. But he did too much talking to me and I felt like he needed a character to interact with throughout the story. I get that in "Tell No One" the main character also did not have anyone to interact with throughout the book but that character was running from danger and he was softer. It just felt different. Win is great but it just felt like too much at times. The first person aspect is up to the author so I am not going to question that. And maybe he could not bring in a sidekick because it would be too much like having a substitute for Myron (maybe his daughter?). I just got tired of Win talking to me in the way that he does, but otherwise I liked it.

David Federman has never felt appreciated. An academically gifted yet painfully forgettable member of his New Jersey high school class, the withdrawn, mild-mannered freshman arrives at Harvard fully expecting to be embraced by a new tribe of high-achieving peers. But, initially, his social prospects seem unlikely to change, sentencing him to a lifetime of anonymity. Then he meets Veronica Morgan Wells. Struck by her beauty, wit, and sophisticated Manhattan upbringing, David falls feverishly in love.

Very negative book
Revisado: 05-03-17
What would have made Loner better?
I cannot say
Has Loner turned you off from other books in this genre?
I did not understand what the book was about before I listened to it. I needed to know more about it. Sometimes a book seems to be one I might like and then I don't want to read the reviews for fear of learning too much about it. This book made me want to listen to a non fiction book.
Did David Bendena do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes. The reader was good. I have no issue with the reader.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Loner?
The ending
Any additional comments?
It is well written. I am not complaining about that part of it. The plot bothered me.

It is nothing like the movie
Revisado: 10-15-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I liked the book but it is so not like the movie I think that should be made clear. The author had thought John Goodman would play the title role not Tom Hanks. It is not sweet like the movie and almost everything that happens to the character is changed. Jenny and Lt Dan and his Momma and the things he says are completely different. I liked it but I wish someone had told me it was completely different than the movie in both events and in tone.
Would you be willing to try another book from Winston Groom? Why or why not?
Yes.
What about Mark Hammer’s performance did you like?
Love the reader
Was Forrest Gump worth the listening time?
Yes

Amazing story
Revisado: 11-01-13
Would you listen to Tower of Basel again? Why?
Not sure I would listen to it again, but I learned a lot and highly recommend it to anyone who believes that there are important global impact things at work in the world that are kept from us and that there are plans for the future of the planet and all of the people living here being created by people outside of our reach and without our knowledge. There are secret bankers who control the world economy and the book introduces you to them and explains the history of the bank and the people who created it and have run it for decades.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
That there are actually a group of "secret" bankers that make a lot of world economic policy.
What about John Mawson’s performance did you like?
Very good job of matching the tone of his voice to the events as they unfold in the book.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When the American banker started helping the Nazi's.
Any additional comments?
In some ways, there is nothing surprising about this book because I believed this group existed. But my beliefs felt like conspiracy theories. Now I know this group of people exist and we know their names. It was like finding out that there are two people who work at the FBI named Mulder and Scully.

Historia
Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science - as well as religious and cultural institutions - has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man's possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman's fertility and fidelity. But this narrative is collapsing....

This book grows on you as you listen to it
Revisado: 11-01-13
Where does Sex at Dawn rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
For the non fiction books that use studies, histories, statistics, etc to make the point of the book it is actually quite good.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked how it seemed to be fairly pessimistic and how it had a kind of negative feeling in the beginning and how positive it grew as I listened. It started off and I felt a sense of hopelessness but I kept listening and gradually the book gave me a sense of hopefulness.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I liked the woman's voice. The man did just the "quotes" at the beginning of chapters and it was not bad but I believe the woman could have done those as well. They were short and maybe it made you pay attention to them more than if she had read them but I don't think so. Not bad either way.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No
Any additional comments?
I almost turned it off several times in the first 1/3 of the book but by the end I was recommending it and talking about various things referenced in the book to other people.

I did not like this book
Revisado: 07-08-12
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I think younger people might enjoy it, but I did not.
What was most disappointing about E. L. James’s story?
It was a stiff read. The writing was average or below.
Would you be willing to try another one of Becca Battoe’s performances?
Maybe if the right book was involved.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?
I did not enjoy this book at all so a scene or two being cut would not have improved it for me
Any additional comments?
I bought it because it was so topical. I did not think I would enjoy it based on the sample but it is the number one book on a lot of lists so I took a chance. I was wrong. I did not enjoy any of it but I am not complaining. Some books are great and some are not. Other people may enjoy this (and obviously do) but I did not.
