Beautiful rendering of the deepest trenches in a mind dance perfectly with the other world in this story. George Guidall is superb, as always. I could listen to him read a phone book.

I can't tolerate this narration. Mssr. Brassard's tonal quality is simply unlistenable. He has made Gamache sound like he's had a throat transplant, and unfortunately, Jean Guy sounds exactly like him. Come to think of it, so does everyone. I went back to one of the first books to remind myself how the characters should sound, and with their voices resonating I will read this novel. I hope to update this review. I would have preferred to leave no rating for the story because I could only listen to the first few chapters.

George Guidall's narration brings the characters to life, especially Henry. The dual storyline here blends nicely.

Although this is the final in the series, I felt it could have been concluded by the end of Book 3. The antagonist became overdrawn to the point of annoying, rather than terrifying, and George's story became unbelievable. Also, I'm not entirely innocent of foul language usage myself, but the language used in the dialogue was overly profane. I couldn't listen to this anywhere that someone might overhear.

Jonathan Pryce - stellar narration!

I had never read this book and enjoyed the story very much, but the narration was perfect. Mr. Pryce gives voice to each character so elegantly that it feels as if an entire cast is narrating. I especially loved his take on Fagan. The classics need a classic actor. This was 18 hours of pure blissful listening.

This is a short novel, and although the believability of a man suddenly being forced to accepting custodial responsibility for a child not his own seemed thin, Joy Ellis supports the situation well, creating a believable story. I did feel the conclusion was a bit contrived, a bit rushed, but all-in-all it was enjoyable and the narrator, Tom Bateman, gave a nice performance.

I also hesitated to listen to this story due to the less-than-happy reviews and many comments about it being an anti-gun treatise, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was glad to have the storyline from the previous book wrap up, and I did not find it unbelievable that Jackman's CID did not arm themselves. I was very happy that, for once, Marie and her motorcycle got to the end of the story unharmed. Seriously, the story was good with many twists and turns. The one-time characters were well-drawn, and the returning characters are revealing themselves story-by-story. They make me want to sit and have a drink with them. Waiting for Marie's mum to figure more prominently in a future story. Good all around, and Richard Armitage is a delightful narrator.

Character interpretation is lacking...

The concept is good, albeit a little stretched, and the writing is okay, albeit somewhat unbelievable. It feels like Louise Penny is a little out of her depth on the topic, but with the former Secretary of State as a co-author, the details feel authentic so far I am halfway through). Joan Allen is a fine actor. I've liked her in everything I've seen her in, but she doesn't get it done here. Her interpretation of the two main characters, Ellen and Betsy, is off. She voices them as immature, sometimes whiny school chums, rather than intelligent women in powerful roles, making their dialogue, actions, and decisions unbelievable. The lack of gravitas is so distracting that halfway through the book I'm still wondering how these dunderheads are going to save the day. I am waiting for Gamache to appear with the Surete, "juste à temps".

Update: after progressing further, I decided to lower my rating of the story and return this title because I could not listen to Joan Allen's interpretation any longer. The story became a bit too unbelievable, and the narration did not improve. In the most desperate, incredibly tense scenes, she continues to voice each character, including men and women, world leaders, global terrorists, and the U.S. Secretary of State with a snarky, mocking, and childish tone. Some of this is the writing, but Ms Allen makes it unbearable. Finally, the proverbial straw: When one of Penny's Three Pines Quebecois characters (from her book series) is introduced Allen mispronounces "Quebec" and the character's name, as well as the few common French words spoken by the francophone. I mean, come on! "Merci" is not hard to pronounce correctly.

Narration - SO not Canadian

This story is set in Canada, primarily in Quebec, where the majority of the population are native French speakers. So, it is jarring to hear this wholly Canadian story delivered in a very distinctly, very tut-tut, jolly good British accent. Mr. Bathurst's voice would be wonderful if the setting were a small, hidden village in Sussex, but we are in Quebec. It is especially disruptive to hear French words and names routinely mispronounced throughout the story, especially by the francophones, and equally distracting to hear the Quebecois speaking with a British accent.
I find it hard to believe that there is not a narrator to be found in all of Quebec or elsewhere who can deliver these stories more authentically than Mr Bathurst.

Paul Daneman has such a perfect voice for this tale. Rose Tremain's characters come alive, and the story unfolds beautifully on his performance. I could have given this ten stars! I'll be looking for this author and this actor in other selections!
