Historia
An autobiography usually requires a justification. The great autobiographies—those by Benvenuto Cellini, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Benjamin Franklin, and Henry Brooks Adams—were justified by their authors living in interesting times, harboring radically new ideas, or participating in great events. Joseph Epstein qualifies on none of these counts. His life has been quiet, lucky in numerous ways, and far from dramatic. But it has also been emblematic of the great changes in our country since World War II. Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life is an intimate look at one life steeped in radical change.

How dreary
Revisado: 05-21-24
I have long been an admirer of Joseph Epstein’s work. I have a shelf full of his essays. So it was with much anticipation I ordered his autobiography. Yikes was this actually written by him. His humor, his irony, his curmudgeonliness is totally absent… and that dreary reader makes it all the tedious to listen to. I stuck with it to the end (last 10 minutes are the best part) A huge disappointment otherwise

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Excellent in every way
Revisado: 05-07-23
There was so much hype about this book when it was published. All of it well deserved. Fascinating tale, excellent reader.
Grann writes history as good as any fiction. He reminds me of Erik Larson who can do the same.

Historia
Lucy Barton is a writer, but her ex-husband, William, remains a hard man to read. William, she confesses, has always been a mystery to me. Another mystery is why the two have remained connected after all these years. They just are. So Lucy is both surprised and not surprised when William asks her to join him on a trip to investigate a recently uncovered family secret—one of those secrets that rearrange everything we think we know about the people closest to us.

Surprised Me
Revisado: 11-16-22
Having just finished an audiobook filled with literally dozens of characters, it was kind of a relief to listen to this splendid, spare novel. In the form of a monologue, Strout (with the splendid Kimberly Farr) makes it all come to life.

But success breeds enemies, and Nellie’s empire faces threats from without and within.

So Many Characters!
Revisado: 11-16-22
This is prime Atkinson...a great story that takes a while to come together. Keeping all the characters straight is a bit of a chore in an audio book, but it all becomes clear if you stick with it. The splendid Jason Watkins manages it perfectly.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Historia
Internationally best-selling author Anthony Horowitz's nail-biting new novel plunges us back into the dark and complex world of detective Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty - dubbed the "Napoleon of crime" by Holmes - in the aftermath of their fateful struggle at the Reichenbach Falls. Days after the encounter at the Swiss waterfall, Pinkerton detective agent Frederick Chase arrives in Europe from New York.

Another Fine Horowitz Sherlock Holmes
Revisado: 11-25-18
Moriarty is equally as good as THE HOUSE OF SILK -- only slightly compromised by Julian Rhind-Tutt. His American accent is a moving target. For a character allegedly from Boston via New York, his vowels kept shifting about -- and would an American REALLY say clark for clerk? This would have been better, I think, with an American narrator. Still, it takes a lot to compromise anything Horowitz writes.

Revisado: 10-05-18
Being an admirer of John Lithgow, I was eager to listen to the recording. Alas, Lithgow very much overacts in telling these two stories. Neither of the stories, to me, were all that compelling. This was hugely disappointing.

improbable
Revisado: 09-19-18
Having read many books by Agatha Christie, I was curious to see how Sophie Hannah (a writer I normally like) would channel her spirit. The scheme behind the murders in this book is so improbable, so overdone, so ridiculous, that I'm amazed at the decent reviews this book has had. And the lame play on words that helped Poirot solve the crime was so absurd I groaned out loud. REALLY?

Historia
In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.

Clever conceit but a bit of snooze
Revisado: 10-19-17
The idea of a young apprentice as clever as Holmes is amusing, but the whole book goes on far too long (the trip to Palestine for example). By chapter 14 I'd had enough and even playing the book at 2X didn't move things along fast enough for my taste.
