Historia
Habiburahman was born in 1979 and raised in a small village in western Burma. When he was three years old, the country’s military leader declared that his people, the Rohingya, were not a recognized ethnic group. Since 1982, millions of Rohingya have had to flee their homes as a result of extreme prejudice and persecution. Here, for the first time, a Rohingya speaks up to expose the truth behind this global humanitarian crisis. Through the eyes of a child, we learn about the historic persecution of the Rohingya people and witness the violence Habiburahman endured.

This book talks about the Rohingya people through the eyes of a man who is from the minority Burmese natives that are highly oppressed people. He tells his story about his struggles growing up and the lack of opportunities given to him as in his country he is considered "black" and not important or worthy of much. He endured slavery in Thailand as well as other situations. It is nice to finally read a book by a Rohingya. It was really well written, though definitely not completely a happy ending since so many of these people are being killed and enslaved in Myanmar, Thailand, and other countries.

When the news broke out about Nxivm's sex trafficking cult for those trying to get into the business of acting and more, I was really stunned to learn about it, even though I read about such things regularly. I was hoping to read books about the situation from survivors once things cooled off. This is the first one that I decided to look into.
While this book is not really written by a survivor, Catherine Oxenberg had been involved in the first stages of the cult in order to appease and be with her daughter until she couldn't pull her daughter out of it. Much to her sadness, there were a lot of sad situations that went way deeper than this mother ever knew was going on. She worked hard to bring down the traffickers and won. This story is about her love as a mother and the emotions she went through when her daughter was closing herself off to her for the first time ever.
I have since seen there are other books by people who have survived the whole horrific ordeal, but am really glad that I started with this one. It was well written, though at times dragged. For the most part it was really a great insight to read. I am glad her daughter was supportive of her book in the end too.

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

I did enjoy this book, but it was slow for me at times. I was confused at times reading the beginning portions, but the second half of the book really drew me in and made me feel like I was there living each day with Hiram. Nicely done.

Historia
In 1937, a schoolteacher on the island of Maui challenged a group of poverty-stricken sugar plantation kids to swim upstream against the current of their circumstance. The goal? To become Olympians. They faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The children were Japanese-American, were malnourished and barefoot, and had no pool; they trained in the filthy irrigation ditches that snaked down from the mountains into the sugarcane fields.

This is a detailed biography about those who changed the history of how swimming as a sport is done. Filipino and Japanese Americans living in Hawaii during the late 1930s are taught how to swim against a current in a ditch. They begin to compete in swimming competitions around the world, including the Olympics, becoming great champions. This is a story about their coach and the kids who came out of the club. They endured racism, poverty, and looking nothing like those who were considered champions, but proved the world wrong. I really loved this!! It was a story I had never heard of before!

Best book I read in 2020
Revisado: 01-13-21
This is a middle grade age book that adults would also find fascinating. It talks about the injustices a young girl lives through in her small Pakistani village run by a man who tries to control those around them. She eventually is sold into child labor trafficking through bonded labor and servitude situations. All the while, she has a love for books and those she interacts with. While she lives in an unfair environment, she wants to make a difference to those around her and have a chance for freedom. This is such a well written and engaging book that you will feel completely sucked into once you begin.

Frank Li has two names. There's Frank Li, his American name. Then there's Sung-Min Li, his Korean name. No one uses his Korean name, not even his parents. Frank barely speaks any Korean. He was born and raised in Southern California. Even so, his parents still expect him to end up with a nice Korean girl - which is a problem, since Frank is finally dating the girl of his dreams: Brit Means. Brit, who is funny and nerdy just like him. Brit, who makes him laugh like no one else. Brit...who is white.

This was a coming of age story about a young man who is fully American but has Korean immigrant parents who are very into their roots. They want him to date Korean girls and focus on things to better the family. It frustrates him, but at the same time, he loves his parents very much. His sister has left home and has not been on speaking terms with their parents, and he is very close to her and misses her a lot.
The romantic story is really nice in this and the ending was not bad either. I enjoyed the characters and felt connected to them as I read this story.

"While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive visionary geniuses who remade the world in their images with sheer, almost irrational force, I've found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition." Very well written
Revisado: 01-13-21
"If your belief in yourself is not on actual achievement what it is on: nothing, ego."
Throughout this book there are given examples of historical people who were able to overcome and push for more while doing so through their hard work and efforts.
I really enjoyed this book. It is something I think many people need to hear in order to achieve a better version of themselves without allowing their ego to take a hold of them. It helps to learn from others as well.

Least favorite in the series
Revisado: 01-13-21
This was my least favorite from the Once Upon a Con series, but it was a lovely story still.
This is a Beauty and the Beast take with a modern tale to go along with the stories we've already enjoyed that go around the first two books. The idea is that some rich actor kid who has been a bit of a trouble maker ends up going to a place in the middle of nowhere to just relax and not cause any more issues. Honestly the problem with this book is that there is not enough build up of characters. There is a little, but I feel like I barely had the ability to connect to these characters compared to the other two books. There wasn't enough meat to it. It was not bad though. I had been looking very much forward to reading this, and now I don't feel too badly about that.

Eh. Read the first two books at least
Revisado: 01-13-21
This third book from the series was my least favorite of them, but it was not bad at all and had an amazing twist in it that surprised me. The focus is on a new character who had been attacked a few years prior as a possible survivor to someone who has been murdering young women. I can't really type much about it because I don't want to give away much of the story. The main characters have shifted from the first two books, though there is one common character who is minor in this one.

Very much like the show
Revisado: 01-13-21
When the show of The Queen's Gambit came out, I got hooked and watched it all within a couple of days. I decided to start listening to the book since it was such a delightful story. This book is almost exactly how the show portrayed it, which a few slight differences. It was very good.
In case you are not familiar, a young girl is put into an orphanage after her mother dies. She grows up there and forms a deep love for the game of chess, excelling in it highly as a genius prodigy.
I feel the characters are relatable and interesting and the story makes me feel like I am in the place.
