Captivating
Revisado: 02-09-25
Book 1 grips you early on, keeping you enthralled and continues seamlessly through Book 3 (the ending is kinda cliff hanger-ish, leaving you wanting closure; I presume the second (and final) set probably addresses that). Characters are relatable with plausible back stories.
The narrator kind of 'hams up' his performance in Book 3, but I didn't hold it against him. This set is a steal at 1 credit, I've already started Books 4 - 6 and am pleased thus far. HIGHLY recommend.

Good Ryan Story
Revisado: 01-20-25
Even though it isn't written by Clancy, I kinda wish Tom Clancy would have killed off the Ryan character so other authors couldn't continue the franchise. Ryan is portrayed well enough. It's not the typical Clancy 30 hour listen, but I thought the story was good. I gave the narrator only 4 stars because I thought him 'hammy' at times, and character voices were kinda alike.

Paxton never thought he’d be working for Cloud, the giant tech company that’s eaten much of the American economy. Much less that he’d be moving into one of the company’s sprawling live-work facilities. But compared to what’s left outside, Cloud’s bland chainstore life of gleaming entertainment halls, open-plan offices, and vast warehouses...well, it doesn’t seem so bad. It’s more than anyone else is offering.

Gripping.
Revisado: 01-10-25
The story keeps you involved the entire book. I gave the narrator only 4 stars because her male characters all sound too similar (as do most narrators, she does a poor job on opposite sex voices). Her performance doesn't diminish the book's quality though. Ron Howard supposedly is making a movie based on this. If so, I can't wait to see it.

Good Story
Revisado: 12-20-24
I was leery about getting a 4-volume set for only 1 credit, equating it to the likes of a 'discontinued item' bin at Kmart, but I was impressed with the story. It's no Asimov or Clark, to be sure, but I was quickly immersed and pleased overall. I don't understand why the author choose to break it up into 4 books, when 1 would have been sufficient (Clancy and King write 23 hour novels all the time). Each book seamlessly moves into the next as if merely 'turning the page'. I look forward to Ogden's other works.

Logical Series Ending
Revisado: 12-03-24
A good closing to the series. Didn't expect the ending, but knowing John Matherson, it had to be. My only gripe, albeit petty, is the author's constant mispronunciation of Nietzsche and Fort Detrick.

EXCELLENT
Revisado: 11-20-24
This is a must-read continuation of 'One Second After'. It chronicles the Black Mountain citizens' struggle to adapt to life 'in the dark ages'. I prefer this narrator to the previous as he adds a realistic Southern twang (without going overboard) as is proper for North Carolina residents. I liked the first 2 books in the series so much that I paid cash for the final 2, as I was out of credits.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Historia
Without warning, Russia starts an operation to seize control of a vital arctic waterway off the Alaska coast. For hot-wired naval aviator Karen 'Bunny' O'Hare, it's about to be a bad day at the office. Not everyone takes impending nuclear Armageddon as calmly as O'Hare. From an airfield in Russia, Major-General Bondarev is leading a war he doesn't understand against machines instead of men. Under the US embassy in Moscow, Ambassador Devlin McCarthy discovers she can follow her conscience or the orders of her Secretary of State, but not both.

WW 3?
Revisado: 10-31-24
When a female narrator started the book, I didn't know if I would like it; wasn't sure a woman's voice could pull it off. She is super easy to listen to, but does a terrible man's voice; thus, the rating of 4. The story is a little farfetched, but scarily on the verge of being plausible. I hope Holden comes out with a book 4.
