Historia
The Achaemenid Persian kings ruled over the largest empire of antiquity, stretching from Libya to the steppes of Asia and from Ethiopia to Pakistan. In Persians, historian Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones tells the epic story of this dynasty and the world it ruled. Drawing on Iranian inscriptions, cuneiform tablets, art, and archaeology, he shows how the Achaemenid Persian Empire was the world’s first superpower—one built, despite its imperial ambition, on cooperation and tolerance. This is the definitive history of the Achaemenid dynasty and its legacies in modern-day Iran.

Even better than Persian Fire
Revisado: 02-12-23
Great book, clear, concise, and detailed without losing the plot. I dont agree with reviews saying this is a whitewashed history, this is very much not an orientalist narrative.

Historia
The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.

A better story than Caesars imo
Revisado: 01-25-23
History remembers Alexander the Great, even though his father phillip really did all the work and made all of it possible. Same with Caesar, an amazingly talented man certainly, but his rise and the fall of the republic were made possible only by the changes put in motion the generation before. This book tells the exciting tale of that generation, and who better to tell it than Mike Duncan, who brought us the original History of Rome podcast? This man is basically Tacitus.

Historia
Denied citizenship by the Roman Empire, a soldier named Alaric changed history by unleashing a surprise attack on the capital city of an unjust empire. Stigmatized and relegated to the margins of Roman society, the Goths were violent "barbarians" who destroyed "civilization," at least in the conventional story of Rome's collapse. But a slight shift of perspective brings their history, and ours, shockingly alive.

shoehorning modern politics into ancient history
Revisado: 09-24-21
The author is clearly trying to tie the fall of rome in with modern politics, unfortunately they distort the actual history in doing so; no the Romans didnt suddenly become xenophobic before the fall of rome, they always were massively xenophobic, even at the height of their empire, as were almost all ancient civilizations. its so painfully obvious the narrative the author is trying to forge, often skipping over some facts or presenting others in a "different light". Modern politics dont belong in ancient historical narratives. Many authors make modern parallels, but they usually keep it in the preface or introduction.

History remembers Attila, the leader of the Huns, as the Romans perceived him: a savage barbarian brutally inflicting terror on whoever crossed his path. Following Attila and the Huns from the steppes of Kazakhstan to the court of Constantinople, Christopher Kelly portrays Attila in a compelling new light, uncovering an unlikely marriage proposal, a long-standing relationship with a treacherous Roman general, and a thwarted assassination plot.

A must have for any ASOIAF nerd
Revisado: 04-13-20
as a fan of actual history and the ASOIAF universe this book was perfect for me. though written as a historical tome it is in no way slow paced or boring, in fact I would describe it as "action packed". the narration is amazing Simon Vance has a wonderful warm and rich voice that really immerses you in the setting. Pour a horn of ale or a flagon of wine and sit back and enjoy!
