Historia
Ambassador Mahit Dzmare arrives in the center of the multi-system Teixcalaanli Empire only to discover that her predecessor, the previous ambassador from their small but fiercely independent mining station, has died. But no one will admit that his death wasn't an accident - or that Mahit might be next to die, during a time of political instability in the highest echelons of the imperial court. Now, Mahit must discover who is behind the murder, rescue herself, and save her station from Teixcalaan's unceasing expansion.

Clearly above average
Revisado: 04-09-25
It is a well written and a well delivered story with a fluid plot. Sufficiently entertaining with characters that stand up to their roles and it does not falter all the way trough the end. It may not be a 'must read' but it is likable.

There are some clever turns and twists in the story, but the characters and dialogues feel pretty shallow

Historia
Meet Toadling. On the day of her birth, she was stolen from her family by the fairies, but she grew up safe and loved in the warm waters of faerieland. Once an adult though, the fae ask a favor of Toadling: return to the human world and offer a blessing of protection to a newborn child. Simple, right? If only. Centuries later, a knight approaches a towering wall of brambles, where the thorns are as thick as your arm and as sharp as swords. He's heard there's a curse here that needs breaking, but it's a curse Toadling will do anything to uphold.

Fairytale alternative story
Revisado: 02-26-25
A readable story though not one you cannot miss. Having said that, T. Kingfisher (Ursula Vernon) has written one my favourite novelettes ever in the SF Fantasy genre which is 'The Tomato Thief', it is such a well crafted story!

Historia
Doug and Judy have both had a secret power all their life. Judy can see every possible future, branching out from each moment like infinite trees. Doug can also see the future, but for him, it's a single, locked-in, inexorable sequence of foreordained events. They can't both be right, but over and over again, they are. Obviously these are the last two people in the world who should date. So, naturally, they do.

I expected more
Revisado: 01-09-25
I have read before some stories from M R Kowal I liked very much. So this collection is not the 'best' of M R Kowal. Having said that there were half a dozen stories that I was attracted to: 'The Bound Man', 'Waiting for Rain', 'First Flight', 'The Consciousness Problem', 'For Solo Cello, op, 12', 'American Changeling' and 'The Lady Astronaut of Mars', the later a Novelette award story that was 'followed' by a series of novels that I had read earlier and enjoyed very much.

The final part in the story that started with Gifts, and the tale of Gry Barre of Roddmant and Orrec Caspro of Caspromant, two children with extraordinary powers. They play a part in Voices too, the sequel to Gifts, in which Memer, a girl who has grown up in a captured city, is part of the people's fight for freedom. And now, in Powers, we have the conclusion to Ursula Le Guin's beautifully written, powerful and moving story of the Western Isles, a tale that will leave every listener begging for more.

Chronicle of Mars colonization
Revisado: 10-30-24
This story feels like a hard core SF novel reminding me of classics from the 50s to the 70s. The writing choice from a narrator point of view is probably not my favourite for a novel, but the story pulled me to the end

Historia
In this Hugo-winner from Connie Willis, when too many jumps back to 1940 leave 21st century Oxford history student Ned Henry exhausted, a relaxing trip to Victorian England seems the perfect solution. But complexities like recalcitrant rowboats, missing cats, and love at first sight make Ned's holiday anything but restful - to say nothing of the way hideous pieces of Victorian art can jeopardize the entire course of history.

Enjoyable writing and British characterization
Revisado: 10-21-24
Connie composes this back timetravel story to the Victorian era and WWII with great skill. The reading is also excellent. Clever and playful dialogues and historical discussions with the characters giving a credible well researched depiction of very British customs and language of the different periods, say as per Jane Austen ... It does not intend to be a hard SF novel and it is not. Sometimes the dialogues seem to go into repetitive cycles and the story moves slower than I expected but I still enjoyed it to the end.
