Love for his missing son draws this self-protective, self-doubting man to a place of total surrender to God. He becomes completely, gloriously intimate with the suffering Jesus.

The story was enjoyable and funny, but I felt it tried a little too hard. I found the pace a bit intense.

I wasn't sure how interested I'd be in learning how caffeine created the modern world. But from the first sentence, I was hooked by Pollan's easy conversational style. I could listen to him all day! His story blended delving into his own experience in caffeine use with an informative yet casual exploration into caffeine's use in various cultures. A delightful explanation from the view of the coffee plant itself completed my new-found knowledge. A very satisfying read.

This suspenseful, fast-moving tale of music and time travel entertained and delighted me. I found that, with a good set of earphones, I could really appreciate the music with its glorious depths of sound. The actors were delightful, employing fun accents to distinguish the characters, and creating an upbeat and hopeful feel even when the plot was scary. I highly recommend it for children 8 and up.

I was not prepared for the technical nature of this book. Many practical ideas are presented, and the author backed up his suggestions with both scientific study and scripture. The format includes many bullet points and subtitles, which are confusing in audio form. The reader is pleasant, but he did not pause sufficiently to indicate a new subtitle or bullet point. On the plus side, the author summarized the major bullet points at the end of the book; also, a pdf is included with the audiobook which can help the listener sort out the points. An excellent bibliography is also included.

The author's faith is so real I get the chills. This faith is not anything one could imagine -- it is passionate, not pious; discerning, not blindly accepting; life-challenging, not sitting on a shelf. And it is sometimes crabby. As a Lutheran I am inspired by the author's love for the Lutheran heritage; as a Missouri-Synod Lutheran I am chagrined by her chastisement of our social conservatism. I sometimes needed to take a break from her intensity, but when I returned, I'd find my heart soaring as she continued her story.

All the Floridas in the multiverse are threatened when Wendell the manatee is kidnapped. This short adventure story is filled with implausible plot twists and unimaginable characters who interact with real people, for example Donald Trump, Justin Trudeau, and Bill Nye, Our hero's running commentary about Earth #506.732 (something like that) is hilarious. I recommend this book for light reading.

Becoming Sad

Michelle Obama, in her clear, pleasing voice, gives a wonderful description of her life. Her memory is remarkable as she recounts her childhood and young adult years. She gives insights into how intelligent and conscientious black men were passed over by employers, how difficult it can be for young black people to get into good schools and then into desirable jobs, and the struggle some children have to stay alive through their school years.

She brings out the quirks and humanity of Barak's personality, and reveals fascinating details of campaigning for senator and later president of the United States.

Michelle shares her hope as well as her discouragement. I needed to take breaks from this book when it dragged me down emotionally. I understand: the experience of black folks is incredibly sad, and Michelle can't help to be discouraged after the election of Donald Trump. However, I sensed more than just sadness in her voice. It might be determination, but I experienced it somewhat as disapproval.

I'm sorry, Michelle, about the way things turned out. I believe there is still hope, despite setbacks. And my hope is not in Barak Obama, but in God, who in His wisdom sees our mistakes and our sorrows and holds the future of all human beings in His hands.
