Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

I didn't think I could love her more...
Revisado: 06-13-24
Viola's ability to tell her story truthfully, with all its brutal beauty, is something that will stay with me for a long, long time. As she walks us through her healing journey out of poverty and trauma and into a loving appreciation for her own power and capability, I felt something kindle within me - the desire to keep trying, to keep going, to find my passion, and to thrive. I wish I could meet her and tell her how much her sharing her story meant to me.

Historia
In the span of four months in 2012, Tig Notaro was hospitalized for a debilitating intestinal disease called C. diff, her mother unexpectedly died, she went through a breakup, and then she was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer. Hit with this devastating barrage, Tig took her grief onstage. Days after receiving her cancer diagnosis, she broke new comedic ground, opening an unvarnished set with the words, "Good evening. Hello. I have cancer. How are you? Hi, how are you? Is everybody having a good time? I have cancer."

Tig's story soothed my mourning
Revisado: 03-09-23
I love Tig. I listen to her podcasts, have seen all her stand-up. If you are not familiar with her, I would go watch some of her stand-up ("Live" and "Drawn" are amazing) because you may find her reading on the audio book difficult if you're not familiar with her dry delivery.
I lost both my parents at the beginning of the pandemic and finding Tig and her vulnerable humor has helped me for the last 3 years understand more and more how to move forward with my life after such a loss. Tig's introspective approach to struggle really gives meaning to the saying "pain is inevitable, suffering is a choice."

Still holds up and keeps you until the very end
Revisado: 10-15-22
I've read this book several times, and listened to this audio version a few times, as well. There's a reason I keep coming back, and why so many iterations have been made for film and TV. Jackson does not shy away from the uncomfortable, as her many works illustrate. And her Hill House does not disappoint.

Narrator made it hard to like
Revisado: 09-26-21
The narrator made it difficult to like the characters and she made the dialogue tough to take at times. The story didn't end as I thought and that was refreshing.

Historia
It was a dark and stormy night when Mary Crane glimpsed the unlit neon sign announcing the vacancy at the Bates Motel. Exhausted, lost, and at the end of her rope, she was eager for a hot shower and a bed for the night. Her room was musty, but clean, and the manager seemed nice, if a little odd.

Amazingly well-written!
Revisado: 07-23-21
Usually, my biggest issue with a book is unrealistic dialogue. I was so thrilled when the dialogue was real and the characters had their own voice. I wish I'd been around in the 50s when this was published and could have read it before knowing the story because I'm sure it was shocking and ghastly and awesome. it's a quick listen and very entertaining- I couldn't turn it off.

I wanted this to be good
Revisado: 07-20-21
I loved Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires, and really enjoyed Horrorstor and My Best Friend's Exorcism. I was so excited for this book- pre-ordered it and everything. Unfortunately, I found it hard to follow, meandering, and I never was able to fully invest into the characters. I found I wasn't rooting for any one of them, and continued listening only to finish it and to give it the full chance to get better. I figured out the antagonist far too quickly and was disappointed to find out I was right. Truly disappointed. The author's attempt to redirect was so obvious to the point where it actually made the truth more obvious instead of muddying the water. Again, I WANTED to like this book, but will be returning it. The idea was awesome, and maybe it would make a better movie than book, I don't know. All I know is I'm bummed it wasn't what I wanted it to be.

You'll think he's making it up, until you don't
Revisado: 05-07-21
The incidents James talks about are so absurd that you initially think there's no way a rational person would do this. But then James clearly illustrates his rationale and it suddenly doesn't seem so absurd. And he does this with his wonderfully self-deprecating and surprisingly insightful story telling genius.

Loved everything about this
Revisado: 10-06-20
Jesse Eisenberg continues to impress me. He just gets better with age, and it feels like we've grown up together. Especially Eisenberg himself and Kaitlyn Devers have amazing performances that make you feel so connected to them. The story satisfies with it's sweetness and gentle nostalgia and fear and love and regret and loss. And with such dryness that you sometimes wonder if even EISENBERG knows he just made a joke. It was brilliant and I'll probably listen again.

Historia
Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

A new take on vampires
Revisado: 09-23-20
1st- I'm impressed with the narrator. her ability to make the main characters distinct and capture their personalities helped bring them to life.
2nd- Grady Hendrix wrote great characters that held true to themselves, even in unprecedented situations.
3rd- Unlike Horrorstor, the ending of this book did not disappoint! I was laughing and cringing the whole time... and maybe cried a bit, too.
I was so pleased with this book especially after listening to the forward by the author and understanding where the story came from. Completely worth the listen! And don't be chased away by the "scary" parts not truly starting until the last third of the book... the setup is important, and the ending is worth the wait.
