Historia
Napoleon's Buttons is the fascinating account of 17 groups of molecules that have greatly influenced the course of history. These molecules provided the impetus for early exploration, and made possible the voyages of discovery that ensued. The molecules resulted in grand feats of engineering and spurred advances in medicine and law; they determined what we now eat, drink, and wear. A change as small as the position of an atom can lead to enormous alterations in the properties of a substance.

Someone needs to instruct the narrators on proper pronunciation
Revisado: 03-26-25
Though the book was well laid out and interesting. The seemingly unending mispronunciation of scientific terms was incredibly disconcerting. Surely somewhere along the editing process, the publishers could have asked for a scientist to give it a listen to and critique on the pronunciation. If I were the author, I would have requested the narrator be given a tutorial before even starting the project.

Historia
As the new manager of the Perfect Passion Company, Katie’s mission is to help the lonely hearts of Edinburgh. With the assistance of her amiable and handsome office neighbor, William, she finds herself using a personal touch to find matches for the city’s lovelorn citizens. When an airline pilot comes to her looking for a woman to take care of him, Katie sends him to cooking school. The case of a hotelier with a particularly overbearing mother may require a delicate two-pronged approach.

Enjoyable but not nearly the complexity …
Revisado: 04-18-24
Most of the time I find AMSs books lots of fun, with lots of plots, sub plots etc. though this was a fun listen; it lacked his usual complexity. You don’t find yourself really forming any significant bonds with the characters. It’s more of a Lake Erie than a Lake Ontario or Superior.

Historia
In this dual collection of short stories, Alexander McCall Smith brings his trademark humor and warmth to inventive tales of spying and vengeance. In one story, a spy dropped deep into enemy territory manages to disguise himself—quite convincingly—as a nun. In another, an invitation to join the Vatican Secret Service sends a prospective operative down a rabbit hole of controversy and confusion. A third story finds an author, on the brink of public ruin, seeing the error of his ways after an act of kindness saves the day.

Not what one usually gets from an AMS novel
Revisado: 12-20-23
I sincerely love the author’s Dalhousie, and Scotland street series. I have read and enjoyed the Corduroy Mansions and No. 1 Ladies Detective series as well. This book … not so much. I guess I was expecting the quality of Ronald Dahl; considering the title. This fell quite a bit short of any of Dahl’s works. It was not always clear when one story was complete and the next started. Though I did not actively dislike the book, I was left disappointed.

Perhaps the wrong narrator for this book
Revisado: 03-29-23
It would be nice to have narrators discuss pronunciation of many of the words used with the author or others in the field of perfumery. About an hour in I seriously considered stopping and returning this book for this and other narrator related issues.

With only a little time left in Scotland, she's determined to make the most of it - starting with attending a fancy whisky tasting with local looker Leith Cameron. Another pleasant listening experience. If you are looking for Agatha Christie, then buy one of her books. This author is, frankly, easier to follow and better suited to listening to while working on uncomplicated projects. I look forward to the next.

I though Stephen King and Dean Koontz could imagine some frightening stories. This book, however, left me shocked and so disappointed in people willing to blindly sacrifice those using the products they were willing to inflict upon them.

Historia
It's early September in Glenkillen, Scotland, when American expat (and romance novelist) Eden Elliott is recruited by the local inspector to act as a special constable. Fortunately it's in name only, since not much happens in Glenkillen. For now Eden has her hands full with other things: preparing for the sheepdog trial on the MacBride farm, a fundraiser for the hospice, and helping her friend Vicki with her first yarn club skein-of-the-month deliveries. Everything seems to be going well until the head of the welcoming committee is found strangled to death with a club member's yarn.

Don’t expect Agatha Christie … I am sure that is not what this author is going for. It’s nice light reading that does leave you guessing, nearly to the end. Having spent time in Inverness and the surrounding area it is fun to visualize the location of this fictitious hamlet.

Historia
This collection of essays observes the perils of motherhood, wifehood, selfhood, and other assorted challenges. Since its publication in 1957, it has sold millions of copies and has been adapted into a Broadway play, a film, a TV series, and now an audiobook. Jean Kerr's parodies of the clichéd 1950s prescription for glamorous or maternal feminine behavior still resonate today as we enter the 21st century.

Not the movie story. Great listen though.
Revisado: 11-14-21
This is a series of well written, short essays about family life in the 50’s but the mothers interactions with small children are timeless. Don’t get this if you are expecting the basic plot used in the Doris Day movie. That being said, the quality of the writing and narration makes this a very enjoyable listen.

A few too many very close, dear friends and tricks to be plausible.
Revisado: 11-06-21
If one were to take 80 years of seedy headlines out of the rags at a supermarket checkout, expand on them and thread oneself into the stories you would have this book. Though many of the names here may have been associated with given sexualities and kinks, the shear number of them, all his very close or dear friends, leaves the reader seriously doubting veracity of the content. Name dropping and betrayal of confidences, all the while telling the reader how he kept the celebrities secrets at all costs (until they were dead and could no longer confirm or deny), grew thin.
