excellent!
Revisado: 06-22-23
The story is very entertaining, the dialog is especially outstanding. Excellent narrator who nails the voice of every character. Reminiscent of both Oscar Wilde's plays and Shakespeare's comedies. Thoroughly entertained!

Historia
When Rin aced the Keju - the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies - it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard - the most elite military school in Nikan - was even more surprising.

Had to speed it up to finish
Revisado: 09-18-22
Had some real difficulties finishing this book. I loved Babel, but it is clear this is an earlier book and the author has grown a lot since she wrote it. It is a demonstration of lack of “show don’t tell”, the characters are not likeable and the magic system is unimaginative and boring. The few times I was drawn into it was where there were clear similarities and inspiration from real history.
The narrator is slow and over dramatic.

Historia
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

Loved it!
Revisado: 09-03-22
Might be the best book I have read all year!
If you like books like Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians or Fray, then this is the book for you. Even The Name if the Wind, for the university atmosphere.
Such a good magic system and such a great and valuable story!

Historia
Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules. But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land.

Didn’t like the new narrator
Revisado: 07-10-22
This isn’t the strongest discworld book, perhaps not so surprising given that it is the first. The narrator brings it down, as many of the new narrators do. I preferred the old one, as they maintain the humour of the book, perhaps simply by being quite matter of fact about it. The new narrators are just too dramatic, and slow.
Thinking I might buy the old ones I don’t already have before audible makes them unavailable for purchase. I was holding of on it because I had high hopes for the re-recording

In both history and fiction, some of the most dramatic, notorious deaths have been through poisonings. Concealed and deliberate, it's a crime that requires advance planning and that for many centuries could go virtually undetected. And yet there is a fine line between healing and killing: The difference lies only in the dosage!

The narrator
Revisado: 05-23-22
The narrator is way too breathy and over dramatic for my taste. She mispronounces a lot of words, I wish she would have at least googled the once not in English. The book is very disorganised as well, though there is some interesting information

Best I have read in a while
Revisado: 05-13-22
I read a lot of fantasy and struggle to find new good books. Loved the fantasy elements and the political intrigue. The characters are great.
The reader pretty good once you get used to him.
The only draw back is that I found the attraction the main character had for girls much younger than him creepy, and that made me dislike him quite a bit and not root for the romantic storyline. But as it is not a large part of the plot I was able to ignore it.

Historia
Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn't exist. After all, life isn't a scene from the movies, is it? But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man whom she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's a moment of pure magic...and then her bus drives away. Laurie thinks she'll never see the boy from the bus again. But at their Christmas party a year later, her best friend, Sarah, introduces her to the new love of her life. Who is, of course, the boy from the bus.

Maybe the best
Revisado: 01-10-22
This just might be the best romance novel I have listened to. The characters are realistic and fun. The narrators are brilliant. Just loved it. The ending might be a little cringe, but after such a lovely slow burn I didn’t mind it.

Pulling teeth
Revisado: 01-09-22
The dialogue is painful and stilted. Way too much description of eye colour. The author makes thing way more complicated than it needs too be. And I feel like she thinks the reader is stupid with how many times she repeats simple information.
Not halfway through yet, but I doubt I will finish it. It just hurts my brain to listen to it.

Among the bustling markets of 18th century Cairo, the city's outcasts eke out a living swindling rich Ottoman nobles and foreign invaders alike. But alongside this new world, the old stories linger. Tales of djinn and spirits. Of cities hidden among the swirling sands of the desert, full of enchantment, desire and riches. Where magic pours down every street, hanging in the air like dust.

YA
Revisado: 11-30-21
This book should have been marked as Young Adult, because it is. Not a fan of YA and wouldn’t have bought it if I had realised, and would then not have been disappointed by it.
The narrator is annoying as well. Ends pretty much every sentence as a question.
