Jim Bauer is shocked when he inherits a large sum of money and a historic mansion. The mysterious gift comes with a stipulation, however; he must use the funds to restore Mansfeld Manor to its original condition. What Jim doesn’t know is that this home has a terrible history. As he works to restore the manor, he begins to learn the terrifying secrets of its past. He discovers tales of missing persons, rumors of occult rituals, and sightings of a ghostly wolf on the grounds.

I have tried this book maybe three times because in the guts of the book there is actually some pretty neat things. But the focus on romance and character interactions leave me not finishing again. Horror is such a tricky genre because of its marketing. While there are substantial horror elements in the book it more leans into romance.

I’m not sure if the intention was to peel back the facade of modern civility but it did a pretty good job of it. At first I was a little bothered by the narrator and his self contradiction but after some thought I believe it was intentional. Kind of that unreliable narrator thing. It’s horror at its most basic. The monsters are us. It never really settles the overall question that is posed at the beginning which makes it linger.

The stories were... good? I think. I could not get passed the narrator. The senseless addition of inflection and drawn-out syllables made it nearly impossible to listen to. I would love to see this collection done again with a different narrator.
