Historia
Amy Redwing has dedicated her life to the Southern California organization she founded to rescue abandoned and endangered golden retrievers. Among dog lovers, she's a legend for the risks she'll take to save an animal from abuse. Among her friends, Amy's heedless devotion is often cause for concern. To widower Brian McCarthy, whose commitment she can't allow herself to return, Amy's behavior is far more puzzling and hides a shattering secret.

I swear... I tried
Revisado: 01-18-20
How did she get this job!?I tried so hard to ignore the really, really bad, terrible character voices, but I just couldn't. I realized that every time I tried to listen, it was actually putting me in a bad mood . The voice of the main character's boyfriend is was no different than the narrator's narration voice (which is undeniably female), and the only distinction between that and all of the other characters' voices was whether they were nasal or not. As (really!) bad as that was, I could have stuck it out, but for the one voice that was the exception to the narrator's "nasal or not" limitation, and unfortunately that was the main character's voice. OMG! She sounded like an immature teenager who thinks using a babyish little girl voice is somehow cute! It is REALLY bad! The narrator has a nice "narration only" voice, but if there are more than two characters that she can use her "nasal or not" voice on (pleeease no more little girl baby voices!), she should Not narrate.

Could have been great... but it wasn’t
Revisado: 01-10-20
I really liked the concept and plot of the story, and many times I was pulled in to it, but I couldn’t stop the eye rolls from the juvenile dialogue between the characters. The characters are supposed be the “top scientific minds” in their fields, but somehow an “idealistic group of college friends out to save the world “ was the image in my head. These “top minds” described facts and theories to each other as if they were explaining the concepts to a 7th grader. It was painfully obvious that this dialogue was meant to inform the reader rather than the characters in the story. The story was good enough to make me listen through to the end though.

Historia
At first, it looks like a disease. An epidemic that spreads through no known means, driving its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. But the force that’s sweeping the world is no pathogen. It’s just the first shock wave, unleashed by a stunning discovery - and what’s in jeopardy is not our minds but the very fabric of time itself. In New York City, Detective Barry Sutton is closing in on the truth - and in a remote laboratory, neuroscientist Helena Smith is unaware that she alone holds the key to this mystery...and the tools for fighting back.

Repetitive!
Revisado: 11-16-19
I really tried, but I could barely get through this! It seemed like the characters just kept saying the same thing over and over and over... The only thing that changed was the time and place. Ugh!

Historia
If Indiana Jones lived in the X-Files era, he might bear at least a passing resemblance to Nolan Moore - a rogue archaeologist hosting a documentary series derisively dismissed by the "real" experts, but beloved by conspiracy theorists. Nolan sets out to retrace the steps of an explorer from 1909 who claimed to have discovered a mysterious cavern high up in the ancient rock of the Grand Canyon. And, for once, he may have actually found what he seeks. Then the trip takes a nasty turn, and the cave begins turning against them in mysterious ways.

Beginning was great, but...
Revisado: 12-30-18
I was really into this story at the beginning, but as it went on, it started to fizzle. For me, the character development was lacking and it was hard to feel invested in the majority of them, and while I really liked the idea of the story and thought it could have been great, it wasn't developed in a way that slowly built suspense so that it would keep me engaged and on the edge of my seat. To give an analogy, it felt like a horror/suspense movie (albeit a fairly decent one) where equally tragic or scary things keep happening and there is not a whole lot of substance in between. Still, it did keep me interested enough to want to know the ending and there were a couple of surprises, though even those seemed to come from left field.

Historia
It's a fear more paralyzing than falling. More terrifying than absolute darkness. More horrifying than anything you can imagine. It's the one fear you cannot escape, no matter where you run...no matter where you hide. It's the fear of yourself. It's real. It can happen to you. And facing it can be deadly.

Loved it!
Revisado: 12-30-18
Another complex, suspenseful, "couldn't put it down" novel from Dean Koontz! I didn't think it was too long at all. When a book is this great, I like being given the opportunity to stay immersed in the story for hours on end!

One of my new favorites
Revisado: 07-14-17
First off... Ray Porter is the best narrator I have ever heard. He makes the characters come to life in a way that nobody else can! I search for new books by looking for him as a narrator.
Second... I absolutely loved this book! I loved the storyline, felt like I knew the characters and felt like I was seeing everything as if I were an observer. It was like watching a movie in my mind!

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

I really enjoyed this story with it's mystery and suspense and I plan to try out another book by this author. The narrator is one of the best I've heard and I will definitely be looking for his name when making future purchases.

Interesting story idea
Revisado: 12-30-16
Started out okay with an interesting storyline but was pretty ridiculous by the end. Narrator had a nice voice to listen to overall and did a couple of the male characters well, but it felt like other voice impressions were more forced or strained and they did not match very well with the characters as I envisioned them. I would listen to him again though if the story was decent.

Loved the Book! Loved the Narrator!
Revisado: 04-08-16
I think I may have a new favorite author! Well, 2nd favorite... Stephen King will always be my #1, but if all of Barry Eisler's books are as good as this one, he is a very close 2nd. I usually only listen to audiobooks when I get in bed at night and I set the timer for 30-45 minutes so the audio will stop shortly after I fall asleep. I couldn't put this one down (so to speak) and listened not only half the night, but throughout the day when I could as well. I finished the entire book (11+ hrs, I think) in less than 2 days. I can't wait to start the next one!
BTW, I read some reviews written by people who thought the sex scenes were much too graphic and didn't add anything, or have any relevance to, the story. I have to admit, the author/narrator did a very good job of creating a very detailed visual in my mind! If you're reticent or prudish about passionate sex, you can always just fast forward through those few short scenes. I do think that the scenes are very relevant to the story, however. The intense sexual desire and relationship the characters have with each other seems to be, in part, the physical expression of an underlying, deep longing to feel accepted and understood and needed by someone, and finding those things in each other is what drives them to make the choices they make. The author/narrator does a fantastic job of pulling you into the characters, making you feel that you know them on a deeper level and not just as some characters in a book.
Yea... I think I'm hooked! Keeping my fingers crossed that the next one I read or listen to is just as good.y
