Historia
Cassie McDowell’s life in 1980s Minnesota seems perfectly wholesome. She lives on a farm, loves school, and has a crush on the nicest boy in class. Yes, there are her parents’ strange parties and their parade of deviant guests, but she’s grown accustomed to them. All that changes when someone comes hunting in Lilydale. One by one, local boys go missing. One by one, they return changed - violent, moody, and withdrawn. What happened to them becomes the stuff of shocking rumors. The accusations of who’s responsible grow just as wild, and dangerous town secrets start to surface.

The definition of uneasy
Revisado: 02-28-25
Without being explicit, this book made me feel so uneasy from the first chapter. Telling this story from the perspective of a young teen girl just hit close to home, because I think most young girls have felt uncomfortable the way Cassie felt throughout the book. Whether the uneasiness came from family, friends, or strangers, growing up as a girl is never easy, and yet Cassie was forever hopeful and optimistic. This is the story of girlhood and perseverance. Although maybe not for everyone, I truly think it's a story that needed to be shared.

Historia
In 1998 an Alku, Minnesota, family of five was brutally murdered in their sleep. The event shook the insulated community but, without any solid leads, was relegated to the cold case files, where it moldered for twenty-five years. Until today. Agent Harry Steinbeck hoped never to return to the northland, a place that holds terrible memories of his sister’s abduction. But when a recent homicide is connected to Alku’s unsolved mass murder, he and cold case agent Evangeline Reed have no choice but to investigate.

Getting To Know Harry
Revisado: 02-21-25
I was so happy to finally get a peek into Harry's mind and his overwhelming guilt over his sister's disappearance. I loved the mystery of this story as well, following the twists and turns to figuring out the killer alongside Van and Harry was lots of fun. That ending though! Oh my gosh! Can't wait for the next book!

Historia
The double murder of a married couple in a small Washington town draws FBI forensic linguist Raisa Susanto into an investigation that mirrors a decades-old crime. Twenty-five years ago—to the day—Alex Parker murdered his parents, then took his own life, leaving behind a note admitting everything. Raisa, paired with forensic psychologist Callum Kilkenny, uses her skills to read between the lines. Especially now that paranoid postings on a conspiracy thread suggest that Alex was a victim himself.

Are we helpless to become our mothers?
Revisado: 12-06-23
I was absolutely enthralled from beginning to end with this story. It feels like it was written in short stories that just happened to create a book, and Marin Ireland's cool, detached voice fit the women characters so well. Everything led up to and surrounded one moment, but the relationships of mothers and daughters throughout was the real story to me. Women suffer so much in life, in so many different ways, and that was set on display in the book. I will definitely read more from this author, and I'm a huge fan of Marin Ireland now too.

Summer 1980: Despite the local superstition that the Bendy Man haunts the woods, three girls go into a Minnesota forest. Only one comes out, dead silent, her memory gone. The mystery of the Taken Ones captures the nation. Summer 2022: Cold case detective Van Reed and forensic scientist Harry Steinbeck are assigned a disturbing homicide—a woman buried alive, clutching a heart charm necklace belonging to one of the vanished girls. A new fighting crime duo!
Revisado: 10-28-23
I really liked how Van is a VERY flawed character, and not just because of her trauma. She's imperfect but she's stubborn and that's always a fun combo for a main character. Harry as her handsome but straight-laced partner is a good match for her. I did like how procedural this was, even if it did drag at times.
My only real complaint is the editing of the narration. The narrator was great, but there were times where dialogue blurred together without the right pauses and it got confusing trying to figure out who was speaking. But other than that, a really solid story! I'm looking forward to the next one!

Historia
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Twist Extravaganza!
Revisado: 10-13-23
I don't think I've ever listened to a book with so many twists. Wow. I thought at one point the story dragged a bit, but once I got to the end, it all made sense. Don't give up on this book...the ending is two-hours long and non-stop revelations. Loved the narration too!

Captivating from beginning to end
Revisado: 09-21-23
Best book I've listened to all year. The author really captures the pure rage women have when we are harassed and misunderstood and helpless on a daily basis. We take the power back in this book, and it's glorious. 100/10.

Revisado: 09-15-23
I ALMOST gave up toward the end because I thought the ending didn't fit the narrative. But the REAL ending is perfect and suddenly it all makes sense. I loved the main character's battle with mental illness and guilt, and all of the side characters were great too. I also loved the narrator, who did a good job with different voices and emotions the characters felt.

Disturbing but awesome look into serial killers
Revisado: 01-09-23
I loved Anne Frasier's Jude Fontaine series because of her ability to really capture Jude's mental state, and how that either helped or hindered Jude with her cases. The same holds true for how she wrote Reni Fisher, and it kept me hooked throughout the whole book. I also really enjoyed the narrator, which always helps. Off to listen to the next in the series!
