Historia
David M. Potter's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Impending Crisis is the definitive history of antebellum America. Potter's sweeping epic masterfully charts the chaotic forces that climaxed with the outbreak of the Civil War: westward expansion, the divisive issue of slavery, the Dred Scott decision, John Brown's uprising, the ascension of Abraham Lincoln, and the drama of Southern secession.

Terrific history, balanced and nuanced
Revisado: 10-23-23
Potter privileges legislative action in his telling of the tale, which isn’t for everyone. But the book is brilliantly written and offers a balanced interpretation of the Sectional Crisis that avoids hagiography and villainizing.

Not really “Great Courses” material
Revisado: 06-07-23
Like other nonfiction Audible Originals, this has more of a “Here’s my story of what I learned” style. I think the straight lectures of the older Great Courses is better, and helps keep the focus on the material instead of on the lecturer.

Hagiography more than biography.
Revisado: 02-01-20
Seems kind of hagiographic. Monroe's faults and foibles seem to be absent, and the portrait makes him seem like the greatest president we have ever had.
