Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

If you were deciding on which version of pride and prejudice to listen to, definitely pick this one!!!
Revisado: 10-12-22
There is nothing to dislike in either the story or the narration of this awesome book! The narrator is so perfectly chosen for the characters and for the sentiments of this book. I think the other really amazing thing about pride and prejudice is that, even to a 21st-century leader, the sensibilities in the story are compelling. Another thing that I don’t think most people talk about with regards to pride and prejudice is that, while it is a story about love, it is, just as much, a story about family… How our families embarrass us, support us, and, in the end, or just the lot we’ve been given. There is so much of that, in addition to the themes of love and marriage and money that are prevalent in the story. I know you will be delighted all the way through listening to it!

Compulsively wonderful, the whole podcast is a great listen!
Revisado: 11-07-21
You know going into this that there’s going to be some sadness and some disturbing elements with this podcast… I mean, look at the synopsis. But the story is truly fascinating, and Skybound entertainment, who put it together, handles it with such compassion and intelligence, that you don’t feel as if you’re listening only to a sensational recounting of events. Pamela, the narrator, could not be a more perfect choice to share the story with us – – if you could describe someone’s character by her voice, I would say that she must be a smart, caring, tough and authentic person, or at least that’s absolutely the feeling I got from listening to her. Most interesting to me is that the makers of the podcast ultimately offer us a solution distinct from any other that police or juries came up with, and alternative truly interesting to consider. I would recommend this show to anyone who likes true crime, of course, but also to anybody interested in reading about the mental health climate in the US and Canada in the 1980s, and particularly to anyone interested in how that corresponded with women’s issues at the time. If anyone out there at Audible is reading this, I hope you will contract with Skybound entertainment again!

The year is 1970. Emma Gable, a blind teenager coming of age in a small industrial town in Western New York, is about as far from the seismic cultural transformations rocking campuses and city streets across America as a person can get. Emma escapes the chaos of her dysfunctional family by dialing up random numbers on the phone in her bedroom, just to see who'll answer.

Absolutely worth five hours of your time!
Revisado: 10-10-21
I can’t think of anyone whom I wouldn’t recommend this to, it’s really just such a fascinating story! It’s so clearly set in early 1970, and there’s such a clear sense of time and place, but at the same time, there is so much relevancy to the things that we’re experiencing now in the 20s. Listening to this reminded me of being a kid, that feeling of being utterly spellbound and drawn in by a story, to the point where I couldn’t stop listening and when I had to step away, I kept thinking about the characters and wondering what would happen! The one thing I would like to Point out, just out of interest, as the mother of a blind daughter, is that Emma, the protagonist, Who is repeatedly referred to as being blind (she is legally blind yes) absolutely has some site. This is explained at the beginning of the story by Emma herself, but I think it’s easy to forget, at least for somebody who isn’t around blind people very much, just because the word blind is used repeatedly. If you listen carefully, you will notice that she walks with A cane, however, it’s clear to me that the vision she has definitely adds her and moving around in the world. She can figure out where things are without having to have someone escort her or describe things in detail – – it’s a small point, but because there is a fair amount of misunderstanding in our society today about blindness, just as there was back in 1970, I wanted to share that with you. Listen out for the ablest comments made by the “bad guy“ there are one or two. Anyway, especially if you were around during the time when land lines were king, but even if you weren’t, I recommend you drop whatever else you’re doing and jump in and listen!

A very worthwhile read!
Revisado: 09-30-21
So interesting to be reading this book, about dissent and division within a community that turned highly political, during Covid times. Although written in the 90s, it’s striking how little has changed between the 1700s, the late 1900s, and 2021! It’s really fascinating, as we question what freedom means in America (think masks and vaccines) to read about The people of Salem questioning what freedom and American values were supposed to look like back then. Aside from all that though, this is just such a well written, engaging story. I had to read the crucible by Arthur Miller as a student, and I wish that I had had access to this book 2, so historical and yet so much fun and so approachable. I’m sure you will find it hard, as I did, to tear yourself away!

This book speaks in detail about Victoria's real-life experiences of finding her inner strength as a child and in her adult years, as she continually strives to be successful in a world where it's all too easy to be wrapped up and consumed by countless distractions, especially as a caregiver.

Revisado: 09-11-21
The aspect of this book that I found so special and engaging is Victoria, the writer and narrator, shares her story as if talking with a new friend – – someone she likes and respects and speaks to sincerely and with care. Her story may not be exactly out of the ordinary, and the writing could use a little fine-tuning, but Victoria’s warmth, honesty, and strength elevate her story in a completely unique way and bring her to life as a character! Although she talks about her journey towards Christianity, you absolutely do not need to hold similar beliefs to find this book inspiring and uplifting! Her story is all about finding a belief system that works for you, and feeling at home in the world. She is someone I would be honored to know… In fact, I hope she will one day write a sequel to this book! Reading Victoria‘s book will make you think seriously about what you want happiness to look like, and whom you want to do life with!

This book… I have never read anything like it! It is astute and fascinating, whether you are a teenager who loves young adult literature, or a grown-up who never reads it at all! The characters are unbelievable and full of complexity, and the story is absolutely spellbinding! I feel like I’m going to need to read it again soon to pick out any bits and pieces but I might have missed the first time because once can’t be enough with this one! Enjoy!

A book you can’t put down!
Revisado: 04-20-21
It’s amazing how much story, how much meat, this book manages to hold as it’s on the short side. But I read books 3 times as long as it weren’t anywhere near as interesting or well paste. It starts out seeming like a family drama, and then it gets really creepy and spooky and super suspenseful, and then it’s both really sweet and sad at the end. And Aimie Horn does a fabulous job narrating, she really captures each character perfectly! Enjoy!

Great book and perfect for the times!
Revisado: 06-15-20
This book is a lot more than just a good suspense novel – – there is A level of astuteness that goes beyond the average, the writing is excellent, and the story addresses racial and gender stereotypes head on. Even though this book was published in 2018, I can’t help, reading it in late spring of 2020, that it was Meant to be read in the current climate, because it has such a current sensibility. The story is rich and complex, and Steven Weber, the narrator, pulled me right in from the first line. Enjoy!

We have to start somewhere with this topic, but this book leaves a lot more to be said!
Revisado: 01-07-20
At first, I wasn’t sure I was going to review this book, since now we have to post our reviews under a display name, and the subject is such a sensitive one. But in the end, I feel that talking about what is and isn’t working here is Way too important for getting caught up and worries like that – – somebody Hass to do it. Reading this short book made me think about early attempts to talk about other sensitive but important subjects… Race, culture, GLBTQ rights, prostitution, even women’s rights. There were some very good thinkers out there, but they were also those who addressed these issues clumsily, and this book fits in to the latter category. It’s good we’re talking about the topic of being a mistress, something that’s usually left out, dismissed, avoided, assumed to be not worth discussing, considered and feminist… You know the sort of thing. But I would want to caution anyone reading this Book as a source of advice, I would caution you against swallowing it whole. Some of the points it makes have merit, yes, like acknowledging that the role of a mistress requires walking a very fine tight rope between balancing your own needs and those if your partner, reminding you that you are your partners fantasy, cautioning you against expecting too much. But there are other assertions, Such as the statement that you should never tell your family or friends about being involved in an affair with a married partner, that you should never expect pleasure in return for giving it, that I made his blanket statements, not examined, and I fear that statements like this ultimately served a shame a mistress, rather than protect her, to keep her in her place, rather than cautioning her against getting hurt. Also, please be aware that there is not a single statistic in this short book, and no information given about how butler considers himself an expert on the topic. Take what suits you, and leave the rest. At the same time, it is a topic that we need to keep exploring so that there can be some more constructive discussions on how or if or when it is empowering to be a mistress, why someone would choose to become one, and how to honor our own feelings in the role, set good boundaries, and examine what we want and might realistically expect from the relationship. This book would tell you that all mistress/partner relationships are clear-cut and the like, and the simply isn’t true. My hope is that, in future, there can be deeper and better researched popular books that examine these relationships, and that, like much of the good scholarship that exists about social sub groups, that they might be undertaken by insiders to the experience.
