The story is extremely hard to follow because the performance quality is spotty. Hard to follow who is speaking since character voices aren't always easily distinguishable and "FX" overwhelm voices throughout. While the narrative recommends earphones, the erratic sound levels require frequent adjustment to hear the voices and then you get your ear drums blown out in the next second....

Lots of information comes at you fast. As is true of all of Hunter's work, though, it doesn't feel like a dump. Rather, you're being welcomed into a new and really exciting world. Hope for more to come soon.

I couldn't even finish this. Nothing at all like Nora Roberts romances. Her heroines have depth and their motivations and actions make sense. When there is steam, it makes sense in the story. This pile of mess made no sense. The heroine was supposed to be a seasoned Manhattan journalist emotionally wounded from a bad marriage / divorce. Yet she acted like a silly, naïve 15 year old. And maybe it's the times were now living in, but this author seems to think that a guy forcing himself on a women is seductive (as opposed to assault) and that a real women melts at that (as opposed to giving the guy a knee to the crotch). I was aghast.

So glad I found this author / series. I loved the mystery but REALLY liked that the characters were nuanced. They weren't drawn as either all good or all bad but were presented as humans with facets. The "good guys" were shown to have weaknesses and "bad guys" were sometimes just blind....

It was all I could do to get through this book. The characters are so immature and unsympathetic I found myself turning it off every few minutes because I wanted to just yell at them. Any child being raised in the Hayes / Cummings world should be prepared for years of therapy; just not from Zoe Hayes!
