A nice conclusion
Revisado: 12-12-24
Plot twisted unexpectedly, but in a good way. Cornwell brought this series to a good conclusion.

Historia
The Scythians were nomadic horsemen who ranged wide across the grasslands of the Asian steppe from the Altai mountains in the east to the Great Hungarian Plain in the first millennium BC. Their steppe homeland bordered on a number of sedentary states to the south and there were, inevitably, numerous interactions between the nomads and their neighbours. The Scythians fought the Persians on a number of occasions, in one battle killing their king and on another occasion driving the invading army of Darius the Great from the steppe.

Not well organized, not a lot of substance
Revisado: 06-27-22
I’m not sure what caused the author to organize the book in the manner it was, but it made for a confusing read. This is mostly based on archeological finds and as such seems pretty speculative.

Historia
Prizewinning historian Chris Wickham defies the conventional view of the Dark Ages in European history with a work of remarkable scope and rigorous yet accessible scholarship. Drawing on a wealth of new material and featuring a thoughtful synthesis of historical and archaeological approaches, Wickham argues that these centuries were critical in the formulation of European identity. Far from being a middle period between more significant epochs, this age has much to tell us in its own right about the progress of culture and the development of political thought.

Very pretentious author
Revisado: 06-04-22
This author is the reason people dislike academics. His writing is so pompous, elitist and arrogant. The entire first HOUR of the book is dedicated to explaining why every author before him was/is wrong and then proceeds to provide very few original interpretations. It’s a shame because the rest of the Penguin History of Europe series is good. Do yourself a favor and find a substitute for this book.

Wow that was one bad book. It was pretty pointless. Where did the editors even come up with the book description? It is not accurate.

Rife with male chauvinism

The misogyny starts in the very first sentence. It’s not a good sci-fi story, but it’s also the worst perspective modern sci-fi can offer.

Only one of the stories is worth listening to. I don’t mind the introduction of Astinus’ brother, but the stories are less intriguing than the older anthologies. I can’t believe the print version has any value.

This was a pointless addition to the series
Revisado: 03-01-22
This book accomplished nothing in terms of character development and was entirely unnecessary in the series. It also didn’t advance events and spent very little time on the dynastic struggles in Bernicia. In fact the author just dropped that part of the story rather abruptly and casually mentioned it at the end as if his editor had to remind him of the point of the series.

Historia
La moria grandissima began its terrible journey across the European and Asian continents in 1347, leaving unimaginable devastation in its wake. Five years later, 25 million people were dead, felled by the scourge that would come to be called the Black Death. The Great Mortality is the extraordinary epic account of the worst natural disaster in European history - a drama of courage, cowardice, misery, madness, and sacrifice that brilliantly illuminates humankind's darkest days when an old world ended and a new world was born.

Repetitive and silly parallels to modern history
Revisado: 05-31-21
The narrator was difficult to listen to. He insists on a dramatic inflection of the last word of every other sentence.
The subject matter is interesting, but all the book did was trace the first phase of the plague through Europe and suddenly ended. I don’t understand why the author felt the need to compare the events to WWI and WWII. Most of this audience wouldn’t have lived through those event either, so the impact is minimal.

The ship’s weary crew wonders what they will do with their lives in peacetime, but the enemy has other plans, and there is danger on the Homefront. Starring Zachary Quinto, R.C. Bray, Kate Mulgrew, Robert Picardo, and everyone's favorite AI, Skippy the Magnificent, alongside a full cast. Includes plenty of pew-pew-pew, original sound composition, and maybe some singing by R.C. Bray.

Unnecessary departure from normal storytelling
Revisado: 12-24-20
While the story telling from the point of view of Skippy is an enjoyable idea, this “opera” was painful to listen to. Obviously RC Bray was excellent as usual but the rest of cast, with the exceptions of Smyth and Frey, were painful to listen to. The story is fine but the format was not. In unfortunate that this is a necessary listen to understand all of the references in the next book. I hope they don’t do this again.

Incredibly Disappointing, Barely a sequel to Forever War
Revisado: 09-26-20
First off, the narrator is unbearable. His needless emphasis of words makes this hard to listen to. I’ve heard him narrate other books and he does not usually ruin the story through his “acting,” but this one is egregious.
The story can hardly be called part of a series with Forever War, which I enjoyed. The characters hardly resemble those from the first story who are just caught up in a timeline they cannot control. In this, they show aptitude and a desire to control their destiny. The search for meaning is not even mentioned until the final two sections when the story takes such a dark turn that it can’t even be recognized as a continuation of the first book.
