Historia
Frederick the Great is one of history's most important leaders. Famed for his military successes and domestic reforms, his campaigns were a watershed in the history of Europe, securing Prussia's place as a continental power and inaugurating a new pattern of total war that was to endure until 1916. However, much myth surrounds this enigmatic man's personality and his role as politician, warrior, and king.

Military History Fans Will Like
Revisado: 11-28-24
Honestly my fault for getting this. I would have enjoyed this title better had the military been a backdrop for the biography. Instead you get Showalter writing for American military history fans. It makes interesting but surface level comparisons to famous conflicts. I really had to force myself through the last 2-3 hours.

How the Spanish Civil War Became Europe’s Battlefield

Historia
The Spanish Civil War was a local conflict on the margins of Europe—a short yet bloody series of battles in a lull between the great World Wars—but the conflict was a microcosm of war in the 20th century. Not only did the Spanish Civil War foreshadow the global conflagration to come, but it also had its roots in the modern era’s central divides: urban versus rural, religion versus secularization, rich versus poor, progress versus tradition, democracy versus fascism and communism.

Academic Treatment
Revisado: 04-01-24
Nothing wrong here. It was an academic treatment of the war. This is my first time to read a book specifically about the Spanish Civil War. I will likely come back to the subject with a narrative driven piece, but this was a great intro that will help me understand that narrative.

Historia
The Titanic collided with an iceberg on the night of April 14, and 1,500 people died in the freezing waters as the ship met her watery grave. Spectacular in many ways, it's a story that has spurred legends and still sends shivers down the spine a century later. This minute-by-minute account of the sinking is based on over 20 years of research and offers amazing detail of that fateful night.

Enjoying it

I’m on ch 7 currently. This is my indulgent historical read to counter the stuff I’m reading in grad school. (Not bad- just difficult)

Historia
July 1863. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia is invading the North. General Robert E. Lee has made this daring and massive move with seventy thousand men in a determined effort to draw out the Union Army of the Potomac and mortally wound it. His right hand is General James Longstreet, a brooding man who is loyal to Lee but stubbornly argues against his plan. Opposing them is an unknown factor: General George Meade, who has taken command of the Army only two days before what will be perhaps the crucial battle of the Civil War.

I much prefer this reader to the Jeff Sharaa’s reader (Mark Bramhall). Hoye reads Southern voices really well.

Historia
Initially, the Thirty Years War was precipitated in 1618 by religious conflicts between Protestants and Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire. But the conflict soon spread beyond religion to encompass the internal politics and balance of power within the Empire, and then later to the other European powers. By the end, it became simply a dynastic struggle between Bourbon France and Habsburg Spain. And almost all of it was fought out in Germany. Entire regions were depopulated and destroyed.

Great story, I will read it again one day. Since listening to it 2 years ago I can’t not see the words BRANDENBURG, MAGDEBURG, TILLY, and WALLENSTEIN and not pronounce it like this guy.
