Historia
Can a young war correspondent find herself and follow her heart? In this work of historical fiction, 20-something Annabella “Annie” March arrives in France in 1944 intending to write about the war. Soon, however, Annie begins to distance herself from her sometimes-mentor, sometimes-rival - the great Martha Gellhorn - and Gellhorn’s larger-than-life husband, the novelist Ernest Hemingway. She turns to photography in the hopes of making her own name and, to her delight, discovers that images come more easily than words.

Imagining my father…
Revisado: 07-17-24
I lost myself in the descriptions of the places, the weather, the cruelty and the harsh reality of this final battle, one in which my father participated, although not at this precise time and place. But it evoked the very scant oral history I finally nudged from my father a few years before he died.

Historia
Washington Post national investigative reporter Carol Leonnig and White House bureau chief Philip Rucker, both Pulitzer Prize winners, provide the definitive insider narrative of Donald Trump's unique presidency with shocking new reporting and insight into its implications. Here, for the first time, certain officials who felt honor-bound not to divulge what they witnessed in positions of trust tell the truth for the benefit of history.

Brilliant compilation of his “genius.”

I lived these events in real time, as most Americans did. However, having these travesties narrated with context is truly sobering. God save the USA.

Historia
In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Although I have followed the horror story of Trump’s history before and after his time
in the White House, this meticulously compiled account leaves no doubt about how serious the threat is to our country. I pray “We The People” are up to the task of defeating this menace. This book provides all the facts you need to know about DJT and his plan.

Historia
Stephanie Kelton's brilliant exploration of modern monetary theory (MMT) dramatically changes our understanding of how we can best deal with crucial issues ranging from poverty and inequality to creating jobs, expanding health care coverage, climate change, and building resilient infrastructure. Any ambitious proposal, however, inevitably runs into the buzz saw of how to find the money to pay for it, rooted in myths about deficits that are hobbling us as a country.

The truth about the deficit cudgel
Revisado: 11-18-23
Wow! This book explains how and why the Congress can always find funding for projects that repay their benefactors (i.e. the corporations that wield outsized influence), while crying “deficits” when it comes to enacting policies that can help middle class and lower class families with the basic necessities of life. It’s appalling. Reminds me of how galling it was to visit Versailles and see tourists praising the art, architecture and gardens, while remembering the famous quote “Let them eat cake.”

“Never complain, never explain…”
Revisado: 06-07-23
Well, the author sure did explain a lot about the British Empire, and I found his lectures thoroughly captivating and perfectly elucidating, filling in many gaps in my grasp of world history. I am, however, tilting a bit more to the right as a result. (It may also come with age….)

"I’m James Taylor and I’m a professional autobiographer", says the celebrated folk singer at the start of this tender audio memoir. Through decades of music by one of the best-selling musicians of all time, who created classics like "Fire and Rain" and "Carolina in My Mind", James Taylor has doled out his history in the poetry of his work. Taylor says his early life is, "the source of many of my songs", and Break Shot is a tour of his first 21 years in rich, new detail.

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. A sweet bedtime story
Revisado: 11-18-19
This is a well-crafted story that has the feeling of being based on actual events. It sometimes felt a bit too well-crafted; but I laughed and cried and in the end felt it worked. I was a bit dismayed by the alleged PhD saying “....betraying what me and Annette had...” but I guess I will just have to accept the vernacular.

As technology advances faster than our understanding of it, hacking becomes a tactic of war, and the world feels more polarized than ever, Harari addresses the challenge of navigating life in the face of constant and disorienting change and raises the important questions we need to ask ourselves in order to survive.

What an amazing analysis, diagnosis and prognosis!
Revisado: 01-28-19
I listened every morning to this book (after having read his “Sapiens” and “Homo Deus”) as I sat in a hot bath. I recommend it without hesitation. I especially liked the last two chapters. I am trying to avoid proselytizing, as Harari warns against it; but nevertheless, I urge you to listen to this brilliant scientist, scholar and philosopher “explain it all for you.” No sarcasm intended. I love his work.

Everything (almost) you wanted to know about VP but we’re afraid to ask!
Revisado: 11-27-18
I can’t say I didn’t already suspect much of what I learned from this succinct and specific biography of Mike Pence, but the gathering in one place of all the sycophantic elements that imbue this politician appalled even cynical me more than I expected. This is a dangerous man, treading on the tenets of our constitution while holding a Christian Cross in one hand to appease the Evangelicals and a weighty Dollar Sign in the other to repay the Kochian Libertarians who co-opted naive people of faith to get this Machiavellian duo in the White House. I recommend it to all citizens. We are on our way to the Handmaid’s Tale if Pence has his way.
