The Rise of Kyoshi kept you at the edge of your seat. I honestly couldn’t wait to listen to the rest of the chapters. There is betrayal and loss. Questioning oneself whether something is just or unjust. What is right from wrong and do you as a person have the right to determine one’s fate. Also, Nancy Wu is a brilliant speaker/ reader. Her voice is soothing and the ranges in different characters voices is amazing.

I loved the fact that the storyline follows three characters but mostly focuses on Emmy. How all 3 had to deal with the turmoil of war and how each of them were affected. How their lives changed forever and what they had to do to survive.

It’s nice to see how much Pearl and Mei have grown. Joy on the other hand reminds of every stubborn child not wanting to listen to their parents but learns from her mistakes the hard way. Joy’s character slowly grows and becomes more aware of her surroundings and the people around her. All in all the novel proves that a mother’s love will go a long distance and there is literally nothing that will stop a mother from loving and protecting her child.

At first I didn’t see the connection to Manner Rose but then halfway through the novel it starts to connect to the first book. Somewhere along the way the novel drops what happened to be the main focus but then shifts the main focus to the villain and then refocuses on the partial main focus of the novel towards the end or the climatic part of the novel. Overall it was a good listen.

I was excited to begin this series to see what Mei had in store for her future. But to my surprise she faltered and stayed where she was. In all honesty I was disappointed with Mei because she had such great ideas but never followed through with any of them. She blamed everyone around her but herself. It wasn’t until further into the story that I realized that Mei is like the rest of us. She’s human she can only do so much and if she does she has to think of the aftermath that her actions cause or may cause. As the story went on Mei started to grow as well and gain the confidence she needed.

Overall, this novel was a whirlwind of emotions and I enjoyed listening.

I enjoyed the storyline and how it kept you on your toes and at the edge of your seat. Probably one of the best stories written since I always wanted to finish what I was doing so that I can listen to the audiobook. I’m more than likely going to buy the physical copy. I did in fact enjoyed how The Art of War was continuously referred throughout the novel and how Mei tried to figure navigate her life and compose tactics while in the kingdom.

I’ve seen the movie but I really enjoyed the novel. I love the fact that we heard all of their stories: their daughter’s stories and the Joy Luck Club Members. The novel and their stories are a reminder that your child and your mother have gone through so much hardship in their own way that at times you may not understand. And at times it may be a bit late to actually hear what they have to say. It’s like the old saying, “you’ll begin to hear me after I pass.” This is a reminder to cherish each moment and to not take everything for granted.

Although, J.T.’s female character leads are strong and independent in their own way. I have to say hands down Reyna is the best female character he has written thus far. She eludes power, independence, and can command an entire room and make them bend. The storyline is by far the best one from the series and doesn’t follow the kidnapping trend from his previous novels. Brutal Vows has to be my favorite and I do enjoy the fact that all female leads from the previous novels are presented in the novel.
