Historia
It’s Halloween night, 1984, in Coventry, Massachusetts, and two families are unraveling. Up and down the street, horrifying secrets are being revealed, and all the while, mixed in with the trick-or-treaters of all ages, four children who do not belong are walking door to door, merging with the kids of Parmenter Road. Children in vintage costumes with faded, eerie makeup. They seem terrified, and beg the neighborhood kids to hide them away, to keep them safe from The Cunning Man.

Very strong character development, good creep factor, and nail biting action scenes. No complaints, well worth the time invested.

Creepy...Sent Chills Up My Spine
Revisado: 11-01-21
Originally I got this book because of the imaginative hook (a girl goes up a tree and never comes down again), but the story turned out to be so much more. I like books that really jack up the creep factor and the author did an amazing job! It's a rarity to find a book that can actually make a witch scary. So many witch stories are like Hocus Pocus, cute, made for children, but far from terrifying. This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars, honestly. A rare find.

Historia
Rada Dunn is used to the solitary life of the arid valley north of the little town of Peace. Nothing much happens there, and her bean and wheat crops provide her with just enough to keep her away from the rest of her kind...which is how she's come to like it. But when she comes upon human remains that have recently been burned so intensely that they are merely sticky black bones, her serenity is shattered.

A Clever Concept, Very Unique Western
Revisado: 10-18-21
In a small valley people are dying from lightening strikes...and it seems to be deliberate. A witches curse? An angry God? No one knows, but the race is on to rescue the stranded frontier men, women and their families who are trapped.
This is a fun romp, with a few typical Old West characters (and non typical, hero is a woman) and the occasional humor. It was an intelligent work, really liked it. A one-of-a-kind Western for sure.

Historia
Pearly's first trip to the circus with his dad and little sister was magical. He'd never had cotton candy, and he vowed not to eat his; he'd keep it forever. He felt a kinship with the clowns, and he almost understood the strange symbols on their costumes. He even dared a quick touch. On the runway, Dad just couldn't manage to toss the ball and win a kitten for Lucy...until a clown pulled Pearly between the tents and offered to make it happen, for a price.

A Deliciously Disturbingly Horror Story
Revisado: 04-29-21
A frightened child who has been traumatized, predatory clowns stalking him from the shadows...all written in a haunting prose that is rare among horror writers. What more could you possibly want? This is horror done right. You don't just read the story, you feel it, like the memory of a nightmare that refuses to dissipate in the light of day. The narrator, I would also like to note, does a great job casting the spell.
Highly recommend it.

Historia
Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

Satisfying Haunted House Novel
Revisado: 09-22-20
The book follows two stories in parallel, the father's version from his famous novel based on the family's experience twenty five years past and the grown up daughter trying to find the truth behind his book which she believes is a lie. The combination creates a fantastic balance. The father's story is creepy and the daughters keeps us grounded in a sensible reality. When the daughter starts to experience things we know something bigger is going on. I won't give away the ending except to say it was nothing I had expected and it also satisfied both the creepy and realistic views of the father and the daughter.
The two narrators did a great job, so glad they went with two, one a man for the father's version and a woman for the daughter's. Great job, hit the mark perfectly.

There's something in the snow...
Revisado: 08-31-20
This book is excellent, exactly what I always look for but very hard to find - creepy and down right scary at times.
It starts off a little slow introducing the characters, but I'm really glad the author did this because we become fond of the guys in the story and more than that it puts you in a nice happy place, just before everything goes to hell.
This book is not predictable in the slightest. We have all sorts of horror elements coming together in a single situation. It was a delightful read and one I'll listen to again and again.
The narrator was also a perfect choice. Perfect delivery.

Historia
Horrific tales of fright told around a bonfire during remote backwoods retreats are common among close friends. As each person tests the others' ability to remain calm and resist the urge to look over a shoulder as the sounds of nature bellow out in the backdrop, only one may claim victory as the most frightening of the group. Backwoods Bonfire inserts the listener into a group of friends that unintentionally create a case study on what horror means to them, attempting to coerce the others to believe that horror is specific, not fluid.

Haunting Stories that Build
Revisado: 01-24-20
One of the most engaging collections that I've read for awhile. A group of friends sit around a bonfire in a contest of who has the scariest story. The stories start out mild then build and build to a climax I actually didn't see coming. Great fun. I've listened to this one more than once, it's always a blast.

Historia
Felix Allsey is a travel writer with a keen eye for the paranormal, and he's carved out a unique, if only slightly lucrative, niche for himself in nonfiction; he writes travelogues of the country's most haunted places, after haunting them himself. When he convinces the owner of the infamous Rotterdam Mansion to let him stay on the premises for two weeks, he believes he's finally found the location that will bring him a best seller. Then things start going wrong: screams from upstairs, figures in the thresholds, and more than what should be in any basement.

An Excellent Haunted House Book
Revisado: 01-17-20
I almost didn't buy this book because several people wrote that it was slow and boring. Then I remembered that many of the Haunted House books out there, although technically "exciting", have come off almost cartoonish with ghosts popping out at you right from the first chapter. I've disliked that trend because they have eliminated my favorite element in all Haunted House books: Suspense. This book does it right.
We start off with an almost Halloween night feel, the two friends searching the strange house and revisiting their love of horror movies. Like them, you start to have a good time, but slowly a dark foreboding slips into the night. Something is indeed happening in the house, yet at first it doesn't feel dangerous. In parallel, we learn the friendship has its own unspoken flaws, kept hidden from the reader. The unsettling elements slowly combine, building and building until the ending knocks you out of your chair.
I loved this book. I'll listen to it again.

Historia
When Mouse’s dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be? Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there’s more - Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather’s journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants...until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself.

Original, Intelligent and Spooky Fun
Revisado: 01-11-20
This is probably the most unexpected book I've read lately and definitely one of the top ten best ones too. The most unexpected part was how the main character made me laugh several times out loud (heaven help me, I listened to this at work). Not that this was a "funny" book, but what she said was so darn on the nose it was hysterical. The main character was very likable and so was the dog. The overall feel of the book is spooky and the cause is completely unexpected. Very imaginative. And yes, thank you to the reviewer that told us the dog doesn't get hurt because I think this book would really resonate with dog owners and they should not avoid it out of fear for the dog. I almost didn't get it for that reason. So glad I took a chance on it.
Truly an unexpected gem in the haunted house genre

The Suspense Builds and Builds...
Revisado: 01-08-20
A lot of horror goes right for the jugular, but this book builds on the suspense until you're a bundle of nerves when it all goes to hell. This book hit the mark every way possible in my opinion. Excellent writing style, suspenseful, highly imaginative and the horror didn't pull any punches. I highly recommend this book.
