Historia
The year is 1739. Eliza Lucas is sixteen years old when her father leaves her in charge of their family’s three plantations in rural South Carolina and then proceeds to bleed the estates dry in pursuit of his military ambitions. Tensions with the British, and with the Spanish in Florida, just a short way down the coast, are rising, and slaves are starting to become restless. Her mother wants nothing more than for their South Carolina endeavor to fail so they can go back to England. Soon her family is in danger of losing everything.

Captivating and touching through every word.
Revisado: 10-19-23
I really enjoyed this book. I was hesitant to read a book about black slaves, helping their white owners become successful. But this book turned it all around. It was a wonderful perspective on how even within the horror of slavery there were some examples of respect and humanity, as much as possible in that context, for these workers. Eliza inspired me even though it’s been many years since I was 16. She encourages us to be passionate about our dreams and honest with ourselves and our shortcomings. She reminds us of the power in reading!

Being at the end of my career, this book inspires me to intentionally navigate the next season of my life and accomplish even more. I can’t imagine what else I could’ve accomplished had I read this book and followed her advice 35 years ago! It all starts with a spreadsheet!

This book gave me perfect insight into some of the ways that I have been successful as well as the times when I have not. Seeing outside of myself isn’t mysterious anymore. Essential for any leader of an organization or member of a family. Simple, yet powerful.

Through decades of music by one of the best-selling musicians of all time, who created classics like "Fire and Rain" and "Carolina in My Mind", James Taylor has doled out his history in the poetry of his work. I listened to this while driving on a road trip with my husband. He is a musician and we both love music. It was treat. I loved hearing the seeds for his songs. Able to relate to some of his tragedies and struggles. So good we almost ran out of gas.

Practical Gems for School Leaders
Revisado: 06-01-19
I enjoyed this book immensely. I particularly liked how straight forward it is and how Danny Bauer provides so many basic yet essential steps I can take to be a better school leader right now. I am glad he is the narrator since he adds an authentic flair with his voice and emphasis in key places.
