She…sounds…hideous
Revisado: 08-28-24
Listening to her narrate this is horrible.
Her first book was great. I loved it. This one sounds like she’s recording it while reading it for the first time, after just reading an article about the importance of a well placed pause.
Unfortunately, she does NOT nail it. It just sounds like a combination of forced and clumsy.
…as though she is trying to make it sound like she’s just casually lecturing to you.
I’m struggling here even through chapter one and don’t know if I’ll be able to finish listening to this.

Historia
As the Jedi and the Republic focus on internal struggles, a new threat surfaces beyond the farthest reaches of the Outer Rim. An enemy appears from outside known space, bearing weapons and technology unlike anything New Republic scientists have ever seen. Suddenly, Luke, Mara, Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca, along with their children, are thrust again into battle. But this time, all their courage, sacrifice, and even the power of the Force itself, may not be enough.

Hard to deal with the narration. (Also THIS IS THE ABRIDGED Version.)
Revisado: 02-27-24
First of all, this is the abridged version. Don’t assume like me and end up disappointed because it’s not the full book. (100% on me, but no way I’m the only one who fell for this. )
Secondly, it’s as though this guy never saw the OT.
Han and Lando (both who have relatively deep slower voices and cadence) have almost identical high pitched nasally squeaky voices. The only way to differentiate between those two and Luke is Luke is whiney.
It’s so hard to follow this because the dude has 3 versions of the same 3 voices (and none of them are correct.) Someone buy this man a VHS copy of the OT.
Would not recommend. Not even if there’s a fire.

Historia
For years Gregory Roarke and his Kadolian partner Selene worked as crocketts, combing through the atmospheres of uninhabited worlds for places that might be colonized or hold valuable resources. Now, they quietly work for the Icarus Group, a top-secret government organization hunting for portals created by a long-vanished alien race, portals that can teleport a person hundreds or thousands of light-years in the blink of an eye. Roarke and Selene are searching one such possibility when they find that someone appears to be stalking them.

Excellent story, poor production.
Revisado: 02-22-24
Another excellent installation to the series. Zahn does not disappoint, and with the combination of his writing and Marc Thompson’s narration, there’s little to no suspension of disbelief this could have a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. A rose by any other name, as they say…
Here’s my only complaint: some parts of the vocals are so low I can barely hear them. I don’t think I’ve said “Alexa, rewind 15 seconds” in the combination of all the books in my library. Some parts are fine and then a few lines here or there areas though he’s whispering. Lots of volume fluctuation.

Unexpected joy
Revisado: 03-22-23
This is not my normal sort of read, but it was incredible. The comedy was balanced well, it doesn’t take itself too seriously…but it isn’t cheesy. The borderline irreverent comedy was also surprisingly refreshing. Given the writer, I wasn’t surprised how “futurama” it felt, but if they dropped the fbomb a lot. Overall, 5/5 and I recommended it twice before even finishing it.

Cal Kestis has built a new life for himself with the crew of the Stinger Mantis. Together, Cal’s crew has brought down bounty hunters, defeated Inquisitors, and even evaded Darth Vader himself. More important, Merrin, Cere, Greez, and faithful droid BD-1 are the closest thing Cal has had to a family since the fall of the Jedi Order. Even as the galaxy’s future grows more uncertain by the day, with each blow struck against the Empire the Mantis crew grows more daring.

Absolute garbage. Look up how to return it and get your credit back.
Revisado: 03-08-23
Do not be fooled into thinking “it can’t be that bad” and read it anyway. I preordered this, started on day one- finished on day two and have had two 1* reviews removed.
Regardless of your complaints (poor writing, no relevant plot, no plot continuity or growth…poor dialogue, absolutely wasted ink (and voice) of the over the top but horribly written smothering description of a woman’s manly flat chest…) they are all valid. This is absolute poopoo and I can not think of one redeeming quality.
Cal is a bumbling idiot out of a Sunday paper comic strip, Greez is hateful not comically cynical, Merrin is an intergalactic equal opportunity hooer, and the writing is 9th grade book-report quality.
The narrative made Cal sound like a complete idiot, and the audio is frustrating and distracting at best. I’m frustrated writing this review just thinking about how mad I was while reading it.
Read it if you must, but DO NOT FORGET TO RETURN IT FOR YOUR FREE CREDIT when you finish.

I really wanted to like this…
Revisado: 08-10-22
Unfortunately this felt like an afterthought, with the “plot” containing only chronological complaints by fans for gaps in the storyline…or out of nowhere “reading between the lines” that was expected from viewers (especially Ep 9) when they didn’t so much as provide us with lines to read between. Overall, I suppose the writer did what they could with what they had. (Shoulda been a red flag that MarcThompson didn’t narrate. )

Oh my…this narrator :( Will return.
Revisado: 08-26-21
While not a fan of this particular SW author, I am reading legends chronologically- and didn’t want to skip it. The story…as per Schreiber usual is vague, slow and mainly anticlimactic. Could be any story by replacing names of characters to those from any space related franchise.
The narrator is painful. I’m having a hard time sitting through it. I will be returning this, and likely will not make it ll the way through. It is as though it was recorded at 50 different times and recordings are just cut and pasted in order (to include sentences in the middle of paragraphs.)
The narrator emphasizes HORRIBLY. As though he’s reading each sentence for the first time without ANY context and he has NO IDEA where to pause or place emphasis. It is painful to sit through and at times so distracting from the story it makes it a chore to sit through.
It would have been much easier to sit through with a different narrator (clears throat…like Marc Thompson.) Would ONLY recommend if you want to read every book. I’m 1/2 way through the book and there is zero connection to anything else of import in the Star Wars universe. Unless there’s some serious climax, it is 100% skipable.

When the Imperial prison barge Purge—temporary home to five hundred of the galaxy’s most ruthless killers, Rebels, scoundrels, and thieves—breaks down in a distant part of space, its only hope appears to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party from the Purge is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back—bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours, nearly all aboard the Purge die in ways too hideous to imagine.

Unrelated story with familiar character names.
Revisado: 06-25-21
This is the second book I’ve read from this author (First was Maul, Lock Down) and I wanted to finish both before I came to a conclusion.
So, they’re decent stories. The book is well written, it they it is not a Star Wars story as far as I’m concerned. This is just a zombie story in space where 2 characters are Han and Chewie.
Author includes names of other Star Wars characters, which is confusing because they’re not the same characters we are familiar with. An homage to canon Star Wars is nice, but I don’t altering our preconceived notions of who the characters are based on giving the same names as other characters is wise.
Bottom line, decent story but zero way I ever would have read a zombie story that has 2 known characters in an otherwise unrelated story.
The Maul book was a little better as far as relevance, but this was a disappointment.

Prophetic “novel.” Great read.
Revisado: 02-24-21
Absolutely loved this. (aside from Star Wars) I am not a fiction reader. I think that is important to note. An amazing follow up after Wired for War, and I believe there is more truth to the technology than most people’s comfort levels allow for:)
It is well written, well executed, well delivered...and in spite of physical description...my brain is incapable of imagining TAMS as anything other than K2SO.
Highly recommend, and read Wired for War if you enjoy the information.

Better than the movie, and 3 is the best prequel.
Revisado: 01-21-21
Lemme just say I’m a purist, and the prequels were hard to swallow in general. 3 is by far the best, and this book is way better than the movie. It explains a lot of the confusion we have with the creepiness of Padme’s feelings toward Anakin and Anakin’s relationship with Palpatine.
Overall it is amazing at filling in the gaps. The only way it would have been better is if Marc Thompson narrated. This was a great read.
