I love this series. I didn’t realize how invested I had become with the character of Maurice. I’m slowly working my way through this series and this has been one of the best.

A Must Read!!
Revisado: 05-15-24
As a white person, I will never know nor understand the humiliation of slavery. Mr. Haley brings the reader as close to understanding as is possible for one whose ancestors were on the other side.
While never giving a pass to the evil of slavery, Mr. Haley is generous in his treatment of some slave owners, painting them far more graciously than expected.
In addition, his treatment of the white “overseer” George portrays a non-prejudiced southern white person in a time when real-life individuals were surely rare.
I cried when he came to the part where he heard Kunta Kinte’s name spoken by the storyteller and he realized his journey had struck gold.
Such a tremendous book. A tremendous combination of genealogical history with an amalgamation of the African-American story through the years of the stain of slavery in this nation.
Finally, at times it seemed there were several narrators rather than one. Tremendous skill on the part of the person reading!

A True Masterpiece
Revisado: 12-04-23
Only Tolkien does more world building than Hugo. A single descriptive is anathema, five hardly sufficient, ten acceptable, fifteen sublime.
Hugo walks the fine line between happy ending and total despair. Both and neither.
The reader makes the story come alive. I was crying the last ten minutes of the story. It truly makes one think.
Though fictional characters, it is shameful there is no St. Bienvenu nor St. Valjean. The Catholics should address this.

Historia
William Tyndale lived a life of adventure and danger, dodging the king's men, fleeing from his enemies, and meeting with smugglers in the dead of night. What brought a well-educated young English man to such a state? Was he an outlaw? Was he a thief? No - he was a Bible smuggler and a brave one at that.

The story is one that needs to be heard by many. The Bible we enjoy today is in large part because William Tyndall was faithful to God in all he did.

The French Revolution is at the height of its fury. Daily, hundreds of aristocratic heads fall from the guillotine. Emotions run high, and anyone suspected of sympathy toward the nobility is in mortal danger. Only one man is daring enough to lead a small band against popular opinion - the Scarlet Pimpernel. Using masterful disguises and clever strategies, the Scarlet Pimpernel smuggles noblemen and women from France to safety in England. His success is a thorn in the side of the Revolution. As he vanishes from each escapade, he leaves no trace behind except an image of the colorful flower that is his emblem.

A Guilty Pleasure
Revisado: 10-10-23
While it is unlikely this book will ever be considered among the classics of English literature, it is a fun story. The exaggeration of manner and feelings expressed are not quite carried to the extreme, but in this regard it is rather like reading Anne of Green Gables for adults.
The 1934 version with Leslie Howard as Blakeney and Merle Oberon as Marguerite is considered the definitive version. After reading, watch the film.

Historia
According to the Pew Research Center, approximately 37 percent of Americans identify themselves as spiritual but not religious. How to Be Spiritual Without Being Religious is a book for that sizable number of folks who seek a rich and authentic interior life but find formal religious affiliation unappealing. It is a clear and nondogmatic guide for finding one's own path of transformation, for embracing a vision of a "practical faith" that enhances a life of happiness and peace.

An Interesting Read
Revisado: 10-07-23
I thought this was a book on avoiding the pitfalls of religiosity. Then I thought it was a purely secular book with spirituality divorced from religion. In the end, I believe the author is a Christian speaking of spiritual things to a more secular audience. Great concepts, but I’m still unsure of the authors intent.

Historia
In the form of warm, relaxed letters to a close friend, C. S. Lewis meditates on many puzzling questions concerning the intimate dialogue between man and God. He considers practical and metaphysical aspects of prayer, such as when we pray and where. He questions why we seek to inform God in our prayers if he is omniscient, whether there is an ideal form of prayer, and which of our many selves we show to God while praying.

A Great Read
Revisado: 10-04-23
I enjoy Lewis not just because he is brilliant, but more so his humility. He is clear to express his opinions are merely that and freely allows he could be mistaken. Many writers take a position as if it were given to them by the Creator, Himself.

A Sheer Joy to Read
Revisado: 10-03-23
It has been some years since I saw the movie with Megan Follows in the title role. I recently saw this title among the books in Audible. Generally, one either likes the book or the movie. I can honestly say I LOVE both. While watching the movie, the tears came several times. Rarely has this happened when reading the book, but once again, the tears came. A tremendous book. Ms. McAdam’s reading made this work come to life!!
