Didn’t even notice the length!
Revisado: 06-07-23
I’m not usually a fan of high fantasy, and therefore longer, books. But this one had me engaged from the first page. The writing is well crafted and elegant without feeling over the top or flowery at all. The protagonist narrator was great—used pacing, tone, and emphasis to really envelope the listener in the story and capture the characters, which the writing also does well. A few slower-plot parts (why I don’t like high fantasy) actually kept me engaged. And the romance wasn’t forced nor does it eclipse the story—tasteful (though there is one explicit chapter). I’ll probably grab book 2 on audio, too.

Historia
Somedays Jena Crowe just can't get a break. Work at her diner never ends, her two boys are bundles of energy, and she's pretty sure her oldest is about to shift into something furry or feathery. Added to that, changes seem to be coming to the tiny town of Cambio Springs, big changes that not everyone in the isolated town of shapeshifters is thrilled about. Caleb Gilbert was looking for change, and the quiet desert town seemed just the ticket for a more peaceful life.

Small-town Women’s fiction paranormal romantic mystery
Revisado: 03-10-23
A light small-town paranormal romantic (more women’s fictiony) crime mystery in dual POV. A fun cast of characters, building suspicion with constantly high stakes without overdoing it (not a cozy mystery but not grizzly either), and lots of romantic tension and growth. I found the two characters were both well represented in their chapters and added to the story with their POVs. Fun, interesting, and a quick easy read. I listened to the audio and the narrator did a good job separating characters into unique voices and personalities.

Historia
October “Toby” Daye is a changeling, the daughter of Amandine of the fae and a mortal man. Like her mother, she is gifted in blood magic, able to read what has happened to a person through a mere taste of blood. Half-human, half-fae, outsiders from birth, most changelings are second-class children of Faerie spending their lives fighting for the respect of their immortal relations. Toby is the only changeling who has earned knighthood, and she re-earns that position every day.

A fae office whodunnit
Revisado: 02-24-23
Interesting mix of tech and fae with Toby and a familiar cast solving the mystery of office murders. Lagged a bit in places but overall quite engaging. Narrator does a great job giving the story and characters life.

Historia
Good news? I’m no longer a thief. Bad news? I’m no longer a thief. Some may consider that only good news, since I'll no longer run the risk of getting my ass thrown in a grim reaper prison for the rest of my extremely long life. Except I happen to enjoy the thrill of the hunt that comes with relieving goods from my unsuspecting targets. But things never stay boring for long. When I find a necromancer’s undead creation stumbling across a Miami beach - a highly illegal practice these days, I’d like to add - I get pulled into an investigation by the Death Enforcement Agency.

Things get darker in this one with the dead coming back to life and being pupated around town. To counter the darker nature of the mystery, the author has also peppered in more of the protagonist's humor and some of her poor taste in men. I'm still enjoying the characters, the swiftly moving action, and the hooking mysteries to solve. The narrator again does a great job with accents and personalities.

A well-rounded YA fantasy
Revisado: 01-08-22
This light yet riveting read embraces a true young-adult writing style and a leading plot in which Titania, a 15-year-old fae, has to embrace responsibility as a queen. This series has a whole gamut of fantasy beings in a whimsical world, with a coming-of-age story of a head-strong young woman with relatable ticks who faces tension in all kinds of relationships. I listened to the audiobook version and the narrator was fantastic.

Highly intense urban/high fantasy
Revisado: 01-05-22
This is another high-energy demon-focused urban fantasy in the series. The romance grows but so does the dangerous plot, the scary/powerful characters (both protagonist and antagonist), and the dark mood of the settings. I'm an urban fantasy lover, but not big on high fantasy, so I found the parts that aren't on Earth pulled me a bit away. If you're into fantasy of all kinds though, you'll love it. It's a demonc ride. The narrator does a FANTASTIC job as always with different characters, pacing, and tone of voice.

Short and sweet supernatural YA romance
Revisado: 09-22-21
The cover didn't prepare me for the sweetness of this short, little (clean) YA (supernatural--spirit/ghost/astral projection-style) romance. If you've ever had a school crush or hoped to/wanted to ask someone to a dance, you'll be able to relate. This was a cute story that was well narrated.

So much character depth! Plus urban fantasy danger
Revisado: 09-21-21
I love Dannika Dark's ability to create incredibly realistic, diverse, and relatable characters you care about while also making them magical, damaged, surprising, twisted, and heroic. Keystone is full of creatures of lore but with unique stories and backgrounds that continue to be revealed and contribute to/intertwine in exciting and dangerous missions in the "present." I found this one a little slow to grab my interest, so I knocked off one star, but it picked up fast. If you like high-action urban fantasy with a bit of (explicit) romance and incredibly gritty, varied, and real characters, then I recommend starting this series at book 1! Also, Nicole Poole is a FANTASTIC narrator (though I put her at 2x speed), so I highly suggest trying the audiobook, even if you were previously anti-audiobooks, like me!

Historia
The most important rule for an Apprentice Consul is simple: Don't get involved with daemons. Well, Piper is planning to break that rule - big time. After a near-deadly scandal with the Sahar Stone, she has the chance to return to the only life she's ever wanted. All she has to do to keep her Apprenticeship is forget about Ash and Lyre. Ash might be enigmatic and notoriously lethal, and Lyre might be as sinfully irresistible as he is irritating, but they're not bad for a couple of daemons.

The action and danger never stops
Revisado: 09-08-21
Another high-energy story that takes Piper deeper into the world of demons and the fight over a powerful artifact is full of action, danger, and a lot of emotion. I listened to this audiobook in about a day because it was so engrossing! The narrator does a great job too.

Revisado: 08-12-21
This book beautifully wrapped up at the massive arcs of all characters and the world and finished beautifully. More action, more danger, more emotions and challenges, more emotions. And most of all: satisfying conclusion. Narration continues to be perfect. Unrelated: I want a demon.
