Engaging story

Who doesn’t love to learn about the skeletons in someone’s closet- especially those of scandal and romance. I found both main characters to mesh nicely and the conclusion was both heartbreaking and thought evoking.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

I wanted to like it so badly
Revisado: 02-15-24
I found this book to be overhyped and underwhelming. As a psychologist, I found several parts to be grating and the twist at the end gave me the ick. I had such higher hopes.

Strange ending, but decent story
Revisado: 02-15-24
The premise of their finding the house and being there was a bit odd, and there are times throughout the story that it could have taken off in several directions. I found the ending to be irritating and confusing compared to what felt like was going to be the resolution.

I can honestly say that I didn’t expect this story to play out the way that it does. Solid story, relatable characters, and worthy ending.

Intermittent excitement
Revisado: 02-15-24
Overall, a solid choice, but took a while to get into the groove of the narration. There are some relationship twists and dynamic changes that were not entirely expected, but not unbelievable. It became a book that popped up in my memory frequently after completing it.

Historia
Once upon a time Orla was: a woman, a painter, a lover. Now she is a mother and a wife, and when her husband Nick suggests that their city apartment has grown too small for their lives, she agrees, in part because she does agree, and in part because she is too tired to think about what she really does want. She agrees again when Nick announces with pride that he has found an antiquated Georgian house on the Dorset cliffs—a good house for children, he says, tons of space and gorgeous grounds. But as the family settles into the mansion—Orla finds herself unsettled.

Descriptively haunting
Revisado: 02-15-24
Scenes were set so meticulously and vibrantly, that I found myself loving just picturing the world that was being described. There were times that I wanted the storyline to have more detail. I feel like I wanted more closure. I wanted to know who the woman in the jeans had been, what happened to the children at the of both time lines, what happened to the Toby, why mistletoe, how Dot’s time line played out. Overall it was an engaging story with emotional pulls and gothic notes.
