Historia
Giovanna’s pretty face is changing, turning ugly, at least so her father thinks. Giovanna, he says, is looking more like her Aunt Vittoria every day. But can it be true? Is she really changing? Will she turn out like her despised Aunt Vittoria, a woman she hardly knows but whom her mother and father have spent their whole lives avoiding and deriding? There must be a mirror somewhere in which she can see herself as she truly is.

Totally absorbing, great narrator
Revisado: 09-07-20
I listened to this in a day. I'd forgotten how absorbing the worlds Ferrante creates are. Plus, Marisa Tomei's narration is exceptionally good.

Superb performance of a bewildering book
Revisado: 12-03-13
First, the narrator is simply wonderful. As for the story, I read this years ago as a teenager and of course saw the movie. Listening to it now so many years later just highlights the innate racism of the time. Mitchell was a wonderful writer so I'm assuming that much of the racism is a reflection of the post-war Southern whites she was writing about, but I suspect some of it was what was thought during the first half of the 20th century by many people in the US. The attitudes toward slavery and the inferiority of black people are so illogical it's hard to imagine anyone could take them seriously, the same with the incredible sexism shown in the characters of Scarlett and Rhett. Even so, it's a lively story. One fascinating aspect is that many of the views held by the characters (the Negroes are stealing the vote; they'll vote for anyone who promises to give them things) sound like things we were hearing during the 2012 general election. Plus ça change, plus c'est la meme chose...

Historia
The Donne family’s move to the country is inspired by a wish to be close to their cousins, who are to be their nearest neighbours. It proves too close for comfort, however. For a secret switching of wills causes the most genteel pursuit of self-interest to threaten good relations and even good manners.... Ivy Compton-Burnett employs her sharp ear for comedy and celebrated powers of dialogue to spectacular effect. She reveals a devastating microcosm of human society, in which the elders are by no means always the betters, in which no character is totally scrupulous, but none without their appeal.

Horrifically bad performance destroys a very good
Revisado: 11-09-13
I don't know if Teresa DeBerry is English, but based on her performance reading this book I'm pretty sure she is a not particularly good American actress trying to do a posh English accent. In fact her accent is so bad and her reading so overdone and ridiculous it's impossible to get into the book. At one point I wondered whether she was either drunk or not a native English speaker--her delivery is so stilted and slow. Why oh why does she think she has to affect such an annoying, arch accent? I would like to return this if I could but not sure if I can. She has completely ruined what should have been a delightful book.

Moody is soon drawn into the mystery: a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely patterned as the night sky.

Engrossing story; beautifully narrated
Revisado: 10-19-13
I've had this book sitting on my bedside table for months; I finally broke down and got the audio book. I'm so glad I did. It's completely and totally engrossing--I was glad it was so long just because I was enjoying the story so much! After the Hillary Mantel books, probably my favorite Booker winner in a long time. The narrator is fabulous--he does accents incredibly well and in all but a few cases pronounces the Maori words accurately, which is a rarity. One quibble: Unless the pronunciation was different in the 19th century, Hokitika is pronounced Hoe-ka-tick-a, not Hah-ka-tee-ka; since that town is mentioned many, many, many times, the mispronunciation is a bit grating, but otherwise, his performance really makes the story come alive.

If you ever doubted that Colin Firth was a great actor or that Graham Greene was a great writer, this audiobook will change your mind. It is truly engrossing and hearing it read brings so much to the story.
