Historia
Strange things happen in the picture-postcard English village of Lindsay Carfax. When a young man falls into a quarry, it takes nine days to find the body. When rowdy hippies descend on the village, they're given nine days to leave. When an outspoken schoolmaster is kidnapped for nine days, he stays eerily quiet after his release. Now Albert Campion has come to town - and he means to investigate all this strangeness. But whoever is behind the unusual goings - on quickly makes it very clear that his nosing around is not welcome.

Albert Campion is a delight. Mike Ripley has done a great job of keeping the tone and touch of Margery Allingham’s stories. Such a pleasure!

For me, character and community, make the cozy part of cozy mysteries. This novel is perhaps the most delightful I’ve read so far in a truly delightful series. Author and narrator are superb.

Historia
Spring, 1909, and Lady Hardcastle, amateur sleuth and all-round eccentric, is enjoying a well-deserved rest. But a week after a trip to the cattle market, Spencer Caradine, a local farmer, turns up dead in the pub, face-down in his beef and mushroom pie. Once again, it is up to Lady Hardcastle and her maid, Florence, to solve the case. Armed with wit and whimsy, not to mention Florence’s mean right hook, the pair set out to discover what really happened and why. Was it poison or just ill luck?

Delightful Cozy Mystery
Revisado: 05-14-23
Characters are eccentric and charming. Full of life as a cozy mystery should be. Narration is perfect. A truly cozy mystery with emphasis on characters , village gossip, and life choices. Subtle, very subtle, gratuitous swipe at Christianity which seems out of place for the time and temperament of the story. Too many “my dears” for an author who can write so delightfully. I would read it again and I am on to the next book in the series! I love how life goes on in this book in the midst of trying to solve a murder!

At Last a Wonderful Cozy British Mystery
Revisado: 01-14-23
Julianna Deering has created a story that intrigues and delights. Simon Vance’s narration is flawless. For me, Dorothy Sayers’ detective stories are the standard in this genre. (I love Sherlock Holmes but could never call Doyle’s stories cozy. Christie is a genius and almost her own genre; I suspect plot and puzzles are her true loves in spite of her creation of beloved and enduring detective characters.) in a cozy mystery, character is as important as plot. There must be hints of life in the ancillary characters - more than a slight suggestion of community.
The detective has to be more than a puzzle solver. He or she has to have a genuine, specific interest in people or culture or some part of life. He has to be able to draw you into his world without any obvious playing to his audience. Deering has succeeded here while leaving room for her young detective to grow.
Deering has another success here that is all too rare. She is not afraid of showing faith as a dimension of human struggle and life. She depicts that struggle amazingly well with a light but convincing touch. Though I am a bit late discovering this author, I am so glad there’s a whole series to explore!

The happily married Mr. Knightley and Emma are throwing a party at their country estate, bringing together distant relatives and new acquaintances—characters beloved by Jane Austen fans. Definitely not invited is Mr. Wickham, whose latest financial scheme has netted him an even broader array of enemies. As tempers flare and secrets are revealed, it’s clear that everyone would be happier if Mr. Wickham got his comeuppance. Yet they’re all shocked when Wickham turns up murdered—except, of course, for the killer hidden in their midst.

Encore!
Revisado: 09-29-22
I did not expect to enjoy this so much. I couldn’t imagine liking a book with Austen’s characters working well for me. Claudia Gray does an excellent job of capturing the essence of each character and creates charming new ones. It’s not strained or forced. The narrator fits the store perfectly and does a wonderful job of voice shifts without calling attention to her amazing talent. I want another one please — more of Jonathan Darcy and Juliet in company with the others of course. These two new characters demonstrate a compelling insight into Austen’s world as they try to work within their society’s boundaries while remaining true to their moral compass.

Each Book in the Series Seems Better Than the Last
Revisado: 12-03-21
These stories seem to grow warmer and more human and more enjoyable which does not mean I disliked the early ones. This narrator’s voice is more spontaneous which adds a nice contrast to Daisy’s intimidating organizational skills. Belinda is a great addition. Who couldn’t love a train called the Flying Scotsman? (Well - except for the heat and murder!)

Historia
Kate Potter used to love Christmas. A few years ago, she would have been wrapping her presents in September and baking mince pies on Halloween, counting down the days and hours to Christmas. But that was before Kate’s husband left for the army and never came home. Now she can hardly stand December at all. Kate can’t deny she’s lonely, yet she doesn’t think she’s ready for romance. She knows that her son, Jack, needs a Christmas to remember - just like Kate needs a miracle to help her finally move forward with her life. So she’s decided she’ll have to make her own miracle.

Wishing for More Days!
Revisado: 10-07-21
I was so sorry for this book to end. It’s beautifully written. Alexander created a believable child character in Jack- something that is incredibly hard to do! All the other characters are are well done—I actually missed Kate and Jack when the book was over(and my life is busy and full). The narrator is perfect. Every character has a different voice that fits perfectly and yet there’s no artificial stress or strain in the voice. Helen Keeley is perfect for this book, but I suspect she would be just about perfect for any book. This is not your shallow on the surface feel good read, but it is rich and good- like Christmas!

Historia
Autumn, 1921. Lady Eleanor Swift is invited to her old school, St Mary’s, as a guest speaker. Her favorite teacher, Mrs. Wadsworth, has asked that Eleanor talk about her intrepid travels around the globe - travelling the Silk Road by bicycle, crossing the Himalayas and even befriending the Maharaja of India. But in the circumstances, perhaps it would have been a good idea to talk about her career as a daring detective. Because no sooner has Eleanor brushed up on her times tables than she is greeted by terrible news: Mrs. Wadsworth has been murdered.

A Lesson in Cozy Mystery
Revisado: 09-20-21
This is my very favorite in this delightful series. May Eleanor, Hugh, and Clifford live forever and not age! Written with intelligence, wit, and warmth, that does not stray into sentimentality, this novel is one of the finest examples of cozy mysteries I have found. Bright’s characters live and move in a world that draws you in without trying to impress the reader with an over abundance of historical detail or authorial attempts to hit all the cozy buttons. What you learn comes naturally without self-conscious effort on the author’s part. This setting in a British girl’s school is shows Lady Swift and Clifford and Hugh at their best. Eleanor’s self-talk as always is a delight. I will not say more for fear of spoiling a delightful read.

Characters in a Cozy Mystery
Revisado: 09-15-21
I want to visit Tommy and Evelyn. They are charming, fun, and genuinely good people. Aunt Emily is priceless though I cannot imagine how she manages to drink so much gin so early in the morning, but that is a rare occurrence. Coles has created a delightful cast of supporting characters that I enjoyed through each of her stories. It is difficult for many writers to portray genuine goodness as attractive. Coles has done that with flying colors. What I love in a cozy mystery series is to have characters that I want to read about and get to know in the midst of a difficult situation. This series fits that bill — I do wish the individual stories were longer to allow a bit more time for character development.
