good but not great
Revisado: 09-21-22
excellent narration.
Author has an amazing podcast called Fall of Civilizations. this historical novel was pretty good, but not too great. The parallel storylines thing is kind of predictable but the book does a good job bringing ancient Assyria to life and showing the evil of ISIS.

Historia
It is difficult to find another soldier's story to equal Captain Darrell Watt's in terms of time spent on the field of battle and challenges faced. Even by the lofty standards of the SAS and Special Forces, one has to look far to find anyone who can match his record of resilience and valor in the face of such daunting odds and with resources so paltry. In the fight, he showed himself to be a military maestro. After 12 years in the cauldron of war, his cause slipped from beneath him, and Rhodesia gave way to Zimbabwe.

Takes a one-sided view of a complex issue.
Revisado: 02-02-22
I wanted to like this story, just I want to side with the Rhodesians. They are the clear underdog and they really did pull off some insane military accomplishments against all odds. However, this book also ignores the mini-apartheid and racist policies of early Rhodesia. It seems blind to the hold the whites had in the country and the anti-democratic policy of consistently opposing majority rule. It was a savage war where both sides had points, heroes, legitimate claims, and military successes, but this book only expresses half of that.

Historia
NASA is about to launch Apollo 18. While the mission has been billed as a scientific one, flight controller Kazimieras "Kaz" Zemeckis knows there is a darker objective. Intelligence has discovered a secret Soviet space station spying on America, and Apollo 18 may be the only chance to stop it. But as Kaz races to keep the NASA crew one step ahead of their Russian rivals, a deadly accident reveals that not everyone involved is who they were thought to be. With political stakes stretched to the breaking point, the White House and the Kremlin can only watch as their astronauts collide.

Ok

Think Clive Cussler in space. Which means it’s fun but I guess I expected more. It’s full of action and cool details about the space program but it seemed to drag on and the characters weren’t relatable, especially the American “bad guy”.

Historia
In 1714, England's Parliament offered a huge reward to anyone whose method of measuring longitude could be proven successful. The scientific establishment--from Galileo to Sir Isaac Newton--had mapped the heavens in its certainty of a celestial answer. In stark contrast, one man, John Harrison, dared to imagine a mechanical solution--a clock that would keep precise time at sea, something no clock had been able to do on land. And the race was on....

A little bit of history I never knew but told everyone about when I did. The Constant podcast recently did a series on this subject as well, but I would recommend this book as a better use of your time on the subject. Both the explanation and solution to the "problem" are well-portrayed. Be sure to look up pictures of the devices!

Historia
Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son, Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

Very good overview of SW plains culture
Revisado: 11-01-21
I felt this was a fair telling of both sides of the conquering of the West. Brutality was abundant on every side, but I draw the conclusion the whites were morally corrupt as the Comanches and other Plains tribes' moral systems did not consider murder or torture "wrong". It was normal to them, a "Bible" telling not to avenge or brutalize was foreign. the whites however had to go past their morality and dehumanize the tribes.
Living in the far east of Comancheria, I felt this was an important part of my local history and that this book was a fair portrayal of the death of the West. Also Quanah Parker is well-known round these parts.

Historia
We fight, so the rest shall not have to. This is the first verse of the Combat Codes, the mantra of Grievar-kin. They are the reason the world is at peace, the reason the Endless Wars have finally ceased. Disputes between nations are now resolved solely within the steel circumference of the Circle, where Grievars square off in hand-to-hand combat, to the death. The surviving nation takes the dispute bounty: lands, resources, slaves, and pride. But given the stakes, things are never so simple.

Good read for martial arts fans
Revisado: 11-01-21
Found out about this series on r/bjj, and as a fellow butt-scooter, I appreciated the writing style of this uniquely-written book. The overall plot is somewhat generic scifi, but no worries, the flavor, style, and detail in the writing does not make this a generic listen (or read). If you don't do martial arts or Brazilian Jui-jitsu I can't say how much you will enjoy this book, but if you do, this is a beautiful book I thoroughly enjoyed.
Combat is not without cost or detail in this book. The fight scenes are choreographed and described well. Its a bargain, get it!

Historia
In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness.

Balanced and Interesting
Revisado: 09-24-21
I throughly enjoyed this balanced history of the American southwest and New Mexico/Navajo country in particular.
Although I will say the climax of the book occurs at the 3/4 mark, leaving the ending rather flat in my opinion. While still interesting, it seems unbalanced. Still highly recommended despite the narrator’s unwillingness to pronounce Spanish correctly

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Quirky Sci-Fi that I binged
Revisado: 05-31-21
I loved it. The book is like a humorous nerd, quirky with jokes everywhere and lots of science thrown in. This makes it a joy to read (listen to). The time just passes as the narrator also skillfully portrays the very diverse cast of characters. I will probably listen to this one again this year. While it is a bit ridiculous and does have plot holes, the charm of the setting, detail, and plot make up for them in general. Its like a sweet delicacy that you know has issues but it doesn't matter, you continue enjoying it until you're done!
