What a great book
Revisado: 12-01-10
Ayaan Hirsi Ali has lived an amazing life and accomplished outstanding achievements. Her story starts in Somalia and end in the United States. She developed a code of ethics and principles that left her at odds with her family and her culture. Her story is fascinating and I highly recommend this book.

Engaging tale of a hard childhood
Revisado: 11-24-10
I found that I couldn't put down this autobiography which tells the tale of a harrowing childhood. Wells was raised by an alcoholic father she idolized and an eccentric mother. There was no physical abuse to speak of, just the story of a childhood rich with fatherly love, extreme poverty, and self reliant children. I highly recommend this book.

a tale that slowly builds to an unexpected ending
Revisado: 11-24-10
This story is alternately told by the older French concigere (sp?) and the adolescent girl living in her building. Its strange because they seem unaware of each other for more than half the book. Instead both write reflections on life. If, like me, you are hoping for a tale about the interaction between the two main characters, you will have to wait until the very end of the book. I found the story interesting, but slow. However I kept listening and was rewarded by the end of the tale.

well told story of an interesting life
Revisado: 11-24-10
I found this autobiography very engaging. It tells the story of a man who thoroughly loved his profession and had a passion for doing the right thing. I enjoyed listening to his tale and was rooting for him at every turn of events.

Wonderful Tale
Revisado: 05-10-10
I thoroughly enjoyed hearing this tale. The story centers around a young woman coming of age in 17th century Iran. She is a rug maker and very resourceful but faces some real challenges. The story is read by a Persian speaker who speaks English with a Persian accent. That lends just the right crediability to the book. It is a wonder uplifting tale and I highly recommend it.

Yes, this is Turkey
Revisado: 12-11-09
I lived in Turkey for 6 years back in the 60's and I've been fascinated by Livaneli's descriptions of the cities and villages. So much has changed but unfortunately the essential elements of the civilization remain, as Livneli develops in this book. It is a gut wrenching story, sad because women are so badly treated. I haven't quite finished listening to it but I absolutely recommend Bliss to readers who have any interest in the Middle East, in understanding the culture and thoughts of this war torn arena.

Great Book
Revisado: 12-11-09
I wasn't sure if I wanted to hear the details of this tragic event but I'm very glad I listened to this book. Cullen has done an excellent job distilling the many elements of this dreadful happening. The book follows each participant and jumps between the events that occurred before the shootings and the investigation of the shootings. It left me feeling both sad and angry. And I wonder why officials such as the police and other investigating bodies so frequently hide evidence. This is a must read.

Acclaimed author Andrei Cherny tells the gripping saga of a rag-tag band of Americans - with limited resources and little hope for success - keeping West Berliners alive in the face of Soviet tyranny, winning the hearts and minds of former enemies, and giving the world a shining example of fundamental goodness.

Interesting HIstory
Revisado: 12-11-09
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. Cherny made history live by providing background to all facets of this incredible feat. He focused on several central players and provided their history and interwove this information into the greater story. I felt as if I was hearing a cliffhanger who-done-it even though I knew that the airlift happened. It was interesting to see how chance events came together to cause this bit of history. Cherny also speculates about the impact the Berlin Airlift had on the American image overseas and the USAs pre-eminence in the second half of the 20th century. Overall a great book.

Great Book on Changes in China
Revisado: 09-30-09
This book talks about the changes in society that have been occuring in the past 20 years. It follows the life of several different immigrant women moving from the village into the city to work in factories making export goods. Its shows that this is a time of hugh changes in Chinese society for women. An excellent story.
