Historia
John Boyd may be the most remarkable unsung hero in all of American military history. Some remember him as the greatest US fighter pilot ever - the man who, in simulated air-to-air combat, defeated every challenger in less than 40 seconds. Some recall him as the father of our country's most legendary fighter aircraft - the F-15 and F-16. Still, others think of Boyd as the most influential military theorist since Sun Tzu. They know only half the story.

It doesn't pay to be a jerk
Revisado: 03-20-25
I've listened to dozens of audiobooks and for the vast majority I'm sad to leave the story and the characters. "Boyd" is a rare exception as I couldn't wait for it to end. While Col Boyd appears to have been a very good fighter pilot who was later credited with making significant contributions to the outstanding F-15 and F-16 fighters, his obnoxious personality made it very difficult to remain interested in his life beyond his technical contributions. The author seems to have been the president of a teen heart throb fan club with Boyd as the subject of his undying admiration. I served in the Air Force in the mid-80's and found the officers and enlisted men and women to be patriotic, hard working, and respectful of one another. Boyd suggests that only he and his acolytes had any integrity and were the true patriots willing to give up their careers for the greater good. My respect for Boyd tanked early in the book when he (or the author at least) took credit for knowing more than the clipboard wielding test pilots at Edwards. Pushing a plane beyond its published limits during mortal combat is one thing, but suggesting this is a sign of bravery during pilot training is foolish. He was lucky to have survived his early escapades which ended the lives of so many others who pushed just a little further. Thanks to Boyd for his contributions to the greatest combat fighter of all time - the F-15. Sorry to his family and associates who had to suffer along the way.

Historia
A radio broadcaster and journalist for Edward R. Murrow at CBS, William L. Shirer was new to the world of broadcast journalism when he began keeping a diary while on assignment in Europe during the 1930s. Shirer’s Berlin Diary, which is considered the first full record of what was happening in Germany during the rise of the Third Reich, appeared in 1941. Shirer returned to the European front in 1944 to cover the end of the war. End of a Berlin Diary chronicles this year-long study of Germany after Hitler.

The details of Nazi documents discovered after the war.
Revisado: 02-24-25
The success of the Nazi propaganda campaign to poison the minds of the German nation is far too similar to today’s distortions of the truth.

Historia
"You seriously mean to tell me that the ship is doomed?" asked Frank Worsley, commander of the Endurance, stuck impassably in Antarctic ice packs. "What the ice gets," replied Sir Ernest Shackleton, the expedition's unflappable leader, "the ice keeps." It did not, however, get the ship's twenty-five crew members, all of whom survived an eight-hundred-mile voyage across sea, land, and ice to South Georgia, the nearest inhabited island.

Ever since a childhood visit to Washington, DC, Cassidy Hutchinson aspired to serve her country in government. Raised in a working-class family with a military background, she was the first in her immediate family to graduate from college. Despite having no ties to Washington, Hutchinson landed a vital position at the center of the Trump White House.

The least I could do
Revisado: 10-04-23
I was very impressed by the bravery of Ms. Hutchinson under the difficult conditions she faced. She had nothing to gain and so much to lose by testifying that I at least can pay her back by buying her book. How sad that so many of our more senior politicians and staffers only care about themselves. Kevin McCarthy just lost his Speaker’s role last night so the consequences are not over yet.

Historia
Here for the first time, in rich human, political, and scientific detail, is the complete story of how the bomb was developed, from the turn-of-the-century discovery of the vast energy locked inside the atom to the dropping of the first bombs on Japan. Few great discoveries have evolved so swiftly - or have been so misunderstood. From the theoretical discussions of nuclear energy to the bright glare of Trinity, there was a span of hardly more than 25 years.

Lots of details about the major contributors which I had not previously known. The narration, particularly when quoting sources, could have been more realistic as most accents sounded the same.

Another great Sharpe Adventure
Revisado: 03-25-23
We’ve really enjoyed the “newer” Sharpe stories which begin in India and include many more details than the original books. Our first exposure to Sharpe was through the Sean Bean TV adaptations which bear surprisingly little similarity to the books. We also love the Farley narrations.

Historia
Critically acclaimed, perennial New York Times bestselling author Bernard Cornwell (Agincourt, The Fort, the Saxon Tales) makes real history come alive in his breathtaking historical fiction. Praised as "the direct heir to Patrick O'Brian" (Agincourt, The Fort), Cornwell has brilliantly captured the fury, chaos, and excitement of battle as few writers have ever done—perhaps most vividly in his phenomenally popular novels following the illustrious military career of British Army officer Richard Sharpe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
