Historia
Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, though they never met. What they had in common was the year of their murders: 1888. The person responsible was never identified, but the character created by the press to fill that gap has become far more famous than any of these five women. For more than a century, newspapers have been keen to tell us that "the Ripper" preyed on prostitutes. Not only is this untrue, as historian Hallie Rubenhold has discovered, but it has prevented the real stories of these fascinating women from being told.

Fascinating accounts of the lives of 5 Victorian Women
Revisado: 06-21-24
Before listening to this audiobook I had never imagined what I would have done, had I been in these women’s places. I thought, for example “What a shame for a woman to leave a fairly easy job as a maid for a small household. Yet when I considered how I might have felt in such a situation, I can easily imagine myself sneaking out one day for a drink with friends and then being afraid to go back.

In this remarkably moving memoir Ariana Neumann dives into the secrets of her father’s past: years spent hiding in plain sight in war-torn Berlin, the annihilation of dozens of family members in the Holocaust, and the courageous choice to build anew.

An account of a most remarkable life
Revisado: 02-25-24
I was born not so long after the Second World War and have read and heard a lot about Europe in those days. This is one of my favorite books about the time, because the author captures the sunlight along with the horrors. It was this which brought the story of Ms Neumann’s father alive.

The Nine follows the true story of the author’s great aunt Hélène Podliasky, who led a band of nine female resistance fighters as they escaped a German forced labor camp and made a 10-day journey across the front lines of World War II from Germany back to Paris. Drawing on incredible research, this powerful, heart-stopping narrative is a moving tribute to the power of humanity and friendship in the darkest of times.

A Message of Hope and Joy From Dark Time
Revisado: 02-20-24
This is a very well told account of the resistance work of 9 women in occupied France of the 1950s. The book helps to fill a gap in the general knowledge of women’s heroism. The 9 women endured the painful horrors of Nazi camps and the death march toward the end of the war, but these bold women dared to escape. Their adventures as they made their way out of Nazi-controlled Germany and on to liberated France were as exciting as any fictional thriller. The author shares bits of the detective work she had to do to find out the true names of the women. Aside from her great aunt, who was one of the 9, the author at first knew only the noms de guerre of the women. I thought this added greatly to the book and was glad she did not limit her own part in the story to notes.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

A Most Delightful Way To Reminded of All Life’s Possibilities
Revisado: 12-20-23
I have often pondered what my life might have been if I had made different life choices, or in some cases whether I would still be alive. I completely enjoyed Nora’s adventures into parallel lifetimes, and in the most enjoyable way, being reminded of profound truths. Wonderful book, and the narrator was perfect.

Fascinating History
Revisado: 12-17-23
I was not familiar with Iberia’s early medieval period. Rob Mendes makes the history of that time and the place exciting. I look forward to each new episode.

Historia
In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison.

Great story and great performance
Revisado: 11-12-23
What if you knew Earth’s biosphere was going to be completely destroyed and you had choices? I remember reading *On The Beach* by Neville Shute when I was a kid and feeling dissatisfied, because the characters’ only choice was to hang around and die. The end of the world is much more interesting if there are other possibilities.
