Historia
When Alex Easton, a retired soldier, receives word that their childhood friend Madeline Usher is dying, they race to the ancestral home of the Ushers in the remote countryside of Ruritania. What they find there is a nightmare of fungal growths and possessed wildlife, surrounding a dark, pulsing lake. Madeline sleepwalks and speaks in strange voices at night, and her brother Roderick is consumed with a mysterious malady of the nerves. Aided by a redoubtable British mycologist and a baffled American doctor, Alex must unravel the secret of the House of Usher before it consumes them all.

Poor Narration
Revisado: 07-27-24
I'm a big T. Kingfisher fan and I loved the actual story. I downloaded it from Kindle because I could no longer stand to LISTEN to the narrator.
Instead of a performance, it sounded like someone doing an exercise for beginner elocution lessons.

I am not the audience
Revisado: 12-30-23
When a woman who is working full time expresses a feeling of guilt about not making a meal when her husband also works full time, it is clear to me that I am not the audience for this book. However many of her ideas do have a point. I just can't get past the lack of equity in this person's household.

I quarrel with some of the conclusions
Revisado: 06-30-21
While this was clearly a well-researched book, I disagree with some of the conclusions. For instance, Queen Elizabeth's reluctance to name an heir becomes much more understandable when you look at the Tudor dynasty post King Henry the 8th and see how often a potential successor was used as a tool and was then discarded to the detriment both the predecessor and the successor. Certainly, Elizabeth would mind bendingly selfish, but I think but branding her as irresponsible in this case is overstated.

Historia
It isn't easy being the oldest boy in a house run by women - especially for Jerin Whistler. The grand-matriarchs of his clan are descended from soldiers, spies, and thieves. That's partly what's kept their family alive in the wilderness. But it also means Jerin's doomed to marry the girls next door - a fate he's convinced is worse than death. But Jerin gets in even worse trouble when, in the process of a daring rescue, he falls in love with a royal princess who's as high above his station as it's possible to be.

An Old Favorite
Revisado: 01-24-21
I was charmed by this story years ago and was excited to have it in audio form.
Is it essentially a roman novel?
Yes. Yes it is.
However, the world-building and social ramifications of the society's structure is so well done and layered, it would be foolish to skip it just on that account. It's a well-written, well-plotted story with one of the more interesting world's I have had the pleasure to explore.
As an audiobook, the choices made by the narrartor for voice and accent were quite well done. I enjoyed the narration well, even, after a bit forgetting that I was listening to a book I'd read many times. So, well done narrator as well. I think a narrator that makes you forget someone is telling you a story and allows you to be immersed is probably the best job a narrator can do!

A Good Follow Up
Revisado: 10-13-20
I am going to have to admit that I was dubious about getting this as an audiobook. Tim Curry is a hard act to follow. However, the narrator was wonderful. I especially loved her rendition of Sabriel and Ferrin. Ah, Ferrin, what a glorious, fierce young woman you are.

If Hermione Granger Wrote a Self-Help Book
Revisado: 08-19-19
If Hermione Granger wrote a self-help book, this would be it.
Is it useful?
Yes. She has a point that personality influences habit and that it is important to choose a method to create good habits that is in harmony with one's personality and outlook.
I disagree with what she calls a habit, though. If you have to think about it, decide to do it, track it, or force yourself to do it?
It is not yet a habit. It's an aspiration.
Making my bed? That's a habit. I do it without thinking. I never skip a day because I don't decide to do it or think about it. I get up, I pull up the sheets and duvet, then replace the pillows and I'm on with my day. I don't track it in my Bullet Journal, I don't have a self-help group about it. I get up; I make the bed.
Done.
I force myself to work out. I plan for it. I track it. I remind myself I have to do it. I feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment after I do so. That's not an unthinking habit, but something that requires a cognitive load. This is an aspiration, and may always be.
Like many people, both the author and I have many more aspirations than habits.
That said, certainly aspiring to be Better Than Before is a good thing and having strategies for that is also good. But once a habit is formed, it's hard to write about because you don't THINK about it. You Just Do It.
What the book leaves out is why things we keep pushing to repeat do not, in fact, become habits.
Otherwise, the book is quite good if you can get over a bit of over-bearing self-righteousness and tone-deafness about people who are not nearly as well-to-do as she is.

Frighteningly Authoritarian
Revisado: 08-19-19
His view of leadership and greatness is frighteningly authoritarian.
His scholarship is competent but occasionally simplistic.
While an interesting listen, comparing it a course like The Other Side of History and its depth I have to say that I'm not entirely impressed.

Thoroughly Enjoyable Course
Revisado: 01-11-19
I would encourage anyone who has had a Western Civ class to supplement it with this course. It revolves more around How People Lived, especially what we know of common people's lives.
Dr. Garland is an incredibly engaging lecturer, so not only is this educational, it's entertaining.

Awful Narration
Revisado: 07-03-18
Shogun is a marvelous story, but the jokey, sing-song tone he uses to indicate Japanese characters is appalling and distracting. They should get a narrator who handles language and accent better.
