Historia
Horace Manning, scientist, recluse and 'closed book' even to his friends, is found dead in his study at 4a.m., following a dinner in honour of his daughter's engagement. An ivory-handled carving knife rests between his shoulder blades as the houseguests gather round to witness the awful crime. The telephone line has been sabotaged - a calculated murder has been committed. Rewinding twelve hours, the events of the afternoon and evening unfold, revealing a multitude of clues and motives from a closed cast of suspects.

Loved the story. The narrator’s voice was great. Voices worked. Sad she only wrote one book.

Historia
At the Central Criminal Court, an eager crowd awaits the trial of Victoria Lamartine, an active participant in the Resistance during the war. She is now employed at the Family Hotel in Soho, where Major Eric Thoseby has been found murdered. Thoseby is believed to have fathered Lamartine's child, and the prosecution insist that his death is revenge for his abandonment of Lamartine and her arrest by the Gestapo. A last-minute change in Lamartine's defence counsel grants solicitor Nap Rumbold just eight days to prove her innocence.

Incredibly dry and misogynistic even for the time
Revisado: 01-18-21
Woman has a child. Years later she’s accused of killing the father. She says he’s not the father. Zero evidence he is the father. The entire first half (which is all I listened to) is about how all the men say he must be the father. This one is just too misogynistic for me. Maybe it turns out he was the father. I don’t know. I just couldn’t listen to anymore dry court questioning dialogue about whether witnesses thought he was the type of man to father a child. Ended up returning it.

This story is bonkers
Revisado: 10-17-16
The story makes no sense at all. Even the initial set up is mental. But the reading - ah! Perfection. He nails it. If anyone else had read it I'd have given it two stars.

Historia
Recovering from a broken leg after his ignominious fall from the Titanic, Lestrade should have had a peaceful time convalescing. But an attempt on the life of his future father-in-law makes him realise that a policeman is never really off duty. What is particularly puzzling is the arrival of a letter which simply reads, "Four for the Gospel Makers", and it isn’t the first Lestrade has been sent. So begins one of Sholto Lestrade’s most mystifying cases, encompassing both the present and the past.

Flashbacks galore
Revisado: 08-06-16
This was very well read by the author. Led trade is sixty and engaged to be married. A series of events from his past turn out to be linked to the present. Means you can easily take each chapter as its own story while the solution to the overarching mystery remains unclear until the end. I am a big fan of this series.

Wonderful listen!
Revisado: 12-27-15
An excellent story, very well read, with a highly satisfying ending. I am a big Crispin fan and love the little "fourth wall" digs he includes when his characters complain about mystery writers always doing this or that while he is doing it himself. Gervase Fin is an excellent detective although not really the main character in this one. Definitely recommend it for lovers of period british detective fiction.

A real hard slog to get through
Revisado: 12-27-15
I read another review before buying that warned it needed editing and my god, does it ever. I almost gave up at least 4 times as it was just so slow. The actual action takes place in about an hour of the reading. Most of the rest is the detective thinking about things. With editing this could be quite a good traditional british period piece but with the length it is, it makes it an ordeal. As a side note, by the time "who done it" was revealed I couldn't remember who they were. Best listened to in one go so you don't feel a similar disappointment alongside the thrill of having reached the end.

I listened to the first of these after it popped up on the "new titles" list and loved it. This one is just as good. The trio cross paths with two hoodlums hiding out in the English countryside. The plot that follows is one you can imagine Alec Guinness starring in. Well read as well as well written.

Good, solid cosy mystery
Revisado: 07-08-15
This was a good cosy mystery set roughly 200 years ago. Full of inheritance issues, dastardly deeds, gypsies and servants. There are two reasons that it was a four star for me (rather than a 5). The first is that the solution to the story was clear from about half way and so it got a bit annoying that Lavender took so much longer to get there. The second is the narrator who used the same voice for annoying women and old men regardless. I did like his voice but the characters could have done with a bit more variety.

They were the murder league, a group dedicated to committing any murder for anyone. For the small sum of 1,000 pounds, the group would perform the killing for whatever the reason - love, hate, money, fun. All the client had to do was drop a line in their post box and the deal was done.

Good "cozy" mystery
Revisado: 04-27-15
I downloaded this on a whim as I didn't know the author - but I'm glad I did. For people who like the old british green penguin books, this is a good example of the genre. Three ancient mystery writers sit in their club trying to come up with a way to make some money. I loved the friction between them and the group of current writers and the way they talk about each other. The stupidity of the police does bend credibility somewhat but then that is how these books were written back then.
