Lots of Great Information
Revisado: 12-10-24
I'm not going to lie, not a lot in this book actually surprised me (well, except some of the cholesterol info). But I've been doing my own research and have watched the author on YouTube as well.
I love that the information was presented concisely and backed up with studies. And he gives some great recommendations of further reading for more information on each of the topics.
I also enjoyed the injection of humor here and there.

You know, dating in your 40s should be easier. Should be. But it really isn’t. My first date in I don’t-know-how-long is broken up by my ex-husband. I mean, he’s dead, but still. Then a cryptic note from a voodoo queen. A siren who can’t keep it in his pants. And a hot fae who seems to be everything I’ve ever wanted. Except that he’s not a certain blacksmith. I can deal, right?

Duuu-uuck Me!
Revisado: 06-02-24
Every book so far has had a quest, if you will, for Bree and her friends.
And this book is no different.
But the overall story arc of the series is more evident. In fact, so much so, that as I was listening to this book near the end I was thinking "this book is probably close to the end, given the quest they are on… but… damn."
And then at the end of the book I found myself thinking "wow, the next book title makes a lot more sense".
So, for those that haven't read it, I'm not going to spoil it.
Suffice it to say, I'm really glad the next book is out in audio already.
Cause this is a binge-worthy series.
Lauren Fortgang narration is *chef's kiss* again.

Historia
All Bree really wants is to bury her head in the sand somewhere in the south of France while a hot pool boy rubs lotion on her back. Instead, Bree gets blackmailed by the Council of Savannah into a job she doesn’t want—though it does take her to France. They need her to bring a witch back to Savannah for a trial that Bree is sure is a load of hooey. But not just any witch. The first one. The oldest one. The one who makes a T-rex look like he’s howling about a sore tooth.

Gah! Another semi-cliffy!
Revisado: 05-28-24
Bree and her friends are, once again, banded together to accomplish what should be an impossible task.
And of course, Bree makes it out alive. Obviously, because there are more books in this series. But, can we say that about the rest of the cast of characters? Hmmm. I'll let you read the book and find out for yourself. No spoilers here.
I love Bree as a character. She is fiercely loyal to her friends, even when they aren't loyal to her.
She tries to help those that don't even want to be helped.
This book is about as somber as the previous book. And I think Shannon has done an excellent job balancing the humor with the seriousness.
And the pacing feels about right to me. The action starts off almost immediately. The feels are there from the beginning. None of the challenges Bree faces feel like a slog.
Let's talk about the audio.
This book introduced a male narrator, and I was wondering if it was going tobe a dual POV. But no. It has a little bit of Crash's POV in the beginning and the rest of the story is told from Bree's POV with the amazing Lauren Fortgang narrating.
I've been away from the series for a bit and I'm so glad I've come back.

Mark Hansen thought working as artist’s assistant would be glamorous, especially if that artist was a vampire. Black tie events, witty repartee, gracing the pages of the local style section. Didn’t happen. Not even once. Jonathan Varga is an enigma. True, he’s quiet, generous, and scrupulously polite. But he has zero social life, refuses to be interviewed or photographed, and insists he can only consume feline blood.

I thought I had the next steps in my journey plotted out. I thought I knew where I was going and who I was going with - the usual crew of Lila, the smart-mouthed tiny dragon, Ford, the man who would be my mate if I let him, and Balder, the horse who has carried me through more danger than I can count. Crap on a camel, I could not have been more wrong. My world is turned upside down when my crew somehow gains two people who would as soon kill me, as see me succeed.

I didn't expect that ending!
Revisado: 08-17-21
I almost don't know what to say! There were 3 character arcs that seem to have been resolved. Though I don't trust Shannon to not spring something on us again. ;)
I did NOT expect to see the resolution for those three (trying to not have spoilers) this soon in the series.
There were 2 enemies *probably* eliminated. I mean, it's fantasy, they might come back.
But there are certainly still quite a few enemies gunning for Zam, her pride, or world domination. All of which Zam would like to prevent.
Aaand, there's still a meddling Merlin who may or may not actually be helping. 🤣
I'm looking forward to listening to the next book and hopefully, Steve will get his comeuppance.

Historia
Bree was hoping for a few days off from dealing with monsters, bad guys, or general weirdness that doesn’t fit into a human box of what is supposed to be real. What she got was a stay in the hospital with an undead roommate and a whole new set of problems that keep rising from the grave. But her love life is at least on track. Until it’s not. And when it goes sideways, it jumps straight into the drink and sinks to the bottom. Now, Bree has to put her heart on the back burner as she is offered a major job hunting down the very person causing all the undead to rise.

Yes!! Noooo!
Revisado: 08-05-21
Aaaack! Just as Bree is finding her feet and building her found family, it seems Everything starts to crumble, or come Crashing down. 😂
Ok, so everything isn't falling apart. She is gaining new alliances and resources and learning more about her magic and her heritage.
This book's tone is far more somber than previous books. The story is good, but there were definitely fewer LOL moments.
For all you who have read or listened to books 1-4 and are wondering about this book, Definitely Read It. But be forewarned, this is far more cliff-hangery than the previous books. While the story arc of the book is resolved. (Yay!). The bigger character arcs are definitely NOT and I get the impression that the folks that fall on the "can't exactly trust" list, aren't quite out of the picture.
But how would I know, I haven't read book 6 yet.
But you can be damn sure I'm going to!
And once again, Lauren Fortgang delivered a great performance.

Hope is a four-letter word. Yet, I can’t help but hope that the Oracle will be the answer to what I seek. But getting to the Oracle is no small thing as she resides in the center of the Blasted Lands - toxic waste, lava, and monsters. And as the alpha of our pride, it’s up to me to act responsibly and not get my people all killed. Driving us from behind comes the desert goddess whose rage is centered on me, and with her is a new ally, who still holds my heart in his hands. One whose voice calls to me still.

Another Wild Ride
Revisado: 02-28-21
There is so much more Zam gets to learn about herself. I suspect that future books will keep giving more and more as well.
This book left me with quite the emotions.
After the end of the last book, I wasn't sure where the relationships would go. On the romantic side, the main love interest of Zam from the first 3 books seems to be out of the equation. But, I have to admit that I still want that to succeed.
And there's a potential new love interest… Oh, and Steve is still an a$$.
Lila still kicks butt. And the relationship between Zam and Lila is completely cemented. They are sisters.
I'm really looking forward to where this series is going to take me.

Stuck with Alan's ghost following her around, Bree is in hot water now with no easy way out as she's been framed for his murder and plunked in the local pokey. If that weren't bad enough, Gran's ghost has been kidnapped, and all clues point to the Big Easy - New Orleans. With the police on her never-mind-the-size butt, two men vying for her attentions, and a mystery wrapped around the murder of her Gran and ex, she has more than enough to keep her stressed and turning prematurely gray.

Oh Lordy, I love these books…
Revisado: 12-27-20
In full disclosure, I received a free copy of the audiobook for an honest review.
There's just something "real" about Bree. She's not infallible. She's not all-powerful.
And, as she starts to learn more and more about her power and the world she's stepping into, she takes it in stride with much more grace than most of us likely would have especially given that the changes happen at a later stage in life.
She also relies on friends. So, while she is the one putting the pieces together and forming the plan. She's never one to pull it off solo.
I like the fast paced action and adventure. And it's not without heart.
I guess my only complaint is that I don't know when the next one is coming out. (Such is the drawback of starting a series that isn't completed yet, I suppose.) I guess I'll just have to re-listen to the first 4 books in the series when the next one is announced… (Please let there be a next one.)
And of course, Lauren is one of my top narrators. And I love the slight southern twang she pulls in when needed.
I want more! :)

There was nothing that could have prepared me for Dragon’s Ground. And I thought that nothing could be worse than what I faced there. Just my black cat bad luck, the world is set to prove me wrong. South lies the Jinn’s Dominion, and within it the members of my Pride who need my help. The further south we go, the more danger comes not only from outside our group but from within. Ishtar’s new hunters. Marsum, leader of the Jinn. And the emperor himself. All three want something from me. All three claim they can give me the world on a silver platter, to give me my deepest desires.

Rollercoaster of Emotions
Revisado: 09-14-20
I don't think I can actually describe all the emotions that I experienced listening to this book.
Anger, heartbreak, love, pride.
There's so much more depth revealed in this book that hadn't been in the first two. I definitely want to follow and see how Zam's story develops.
Lauren is still in my top narrator list.
As I listen to (or read) more and more books, I have decided that I don't have to finish all the series that I start. But, what makes a book series something worth finishing?
Well, first, one has to care about the characters. The author has to have given the reader a reason to want to keep up with the characters. It doesn't matter if it's because they love the characters and want them to succeed, or if they can't stand the character(s) and want them to fail. But there has to be an emotional attachment.
Check. I Love Zam and Lila
The world has to be engaging, and believable. I mean, if you read fantasy, you already have to suspend reality. But that doesn't mean that what is presented is believable. For every fantasy world an author creates, the magic, or creatures, or beings that exist within that world have to be believable.
Check. There are fantastical creatures in this world. There's magic that exists. And it's believable in the realm of this fantasy. And the heroine isn't an all-powerful being that already knows all her powers. In some respects, she's learning things along with the reader.
And there's enough mystery and suspense that does make me want to keep reading/listening to this series. And still there's enough closure for the book to not be annoying with a cliffhanger.
I recommend this series to anyone that likes mystery, adventure, some action, and a hint of romance. And doesn't need it to be in an urban setting, a fae realm, or the underworld. ;)

We survived the land of the Witch’s Reign - that much is true. But our arrival home is far from welcome. My idiot brother has taken it upon himself to ride off in search of a mythical healer, someone who might help him walk again. Assuming she doesn’t eat him first. Because she’s a dragon and happens to reside in the deepest reaches of the Dragon’s Ground. Like I said, idiot. I’d go after him myself, but his leaving is not the only problem I face. My mentor has forbidden me to leave the safety of the Stockyards. Her reasoning? That I am too weak to weather the coming storms.

Enjoying the Character Growth
Revisado: 08-21-20
This book didn't quite suck me in and hold me there like Witch's Reign did. It's still a good book. And let's be honest, taking 2 days instead of 1 to finish an audiobook is hardly not being sucked in. My measuring stick is just skewed since I didn't actively wake up feeling the NEED to finish the book first thing in the morning. (Which, has happened, and thankfully for my productivity, doesn't happen often.)
There is a lot going on in this story, with multiple people working toward their own agenda. And we, the listener, are only let in on little bits of information at a time.
Because of that, I'm still not sure who all can be trusted and who can't. Which I like because honestly, sometimes I just want to be surprised, or let down.
I have been enjoying the growth of the characters. I would be disappointed if there are more than a few books and there's no growth of a character, especially one that doesn't start the series as a super-accomplished badass.
The story ends on … not quite a cliffhanger. The "current" conflict of the focus of this book was resolved. However, it's pretty telling where the story will go next. So, I'd say it's enough lead-up to the next book with enough resolution that I don't feel it was a cliffhanger.
I'm going to keep on listening to this series.
Besides, I can't wait to hear more of the creative cursing from Zamira.
Narrator Note:
Lauren Fortgang is still one of my favorite narrators. So, if you're stumbling on this review as the first review from me. You should know that I've listened to a lot of audiobooks in a few short months and I know that a bad narrator can ruin a book. Lauren is the opposite of a bad narrator. She brings the characters alive and sucks me into their world.
