Very close to a 5-star. But not quite

I found the prose to be very well crafted and the story gets a B+. I really did like the story. But it had a confusingly variable tempo. Some parts got ample detail while other parts which were integral to the story felt rushed. Easily could have been 5/5 if a little more care had been taken.

It’s a bit slow-moving and a bit bland. Main character isn’t as dynamic as some of his other heroines. I’m not sure he is well-suited to this genre

I've listened to 20 hours of this book and still have yet to locate a discernable story arc. It's like the Seinfeld of of Sci-Fi novels. I have no idea why so many liked it.

Another romanticizing of the rural working folk and their ignorant hatred of the federal government

I don't like all the rules the federal government has, either. But I expect an author to at least try and breakaway from their views and write a story that has dynamic protagonists and not just a whole bunch of characters whose every action in an obvious result of a value the author holds personally. This is libertarian, urban culture disliking, "longing for a more wholesome time" propaganda. Skip it unless that is your thing

What was most disappointing about Nicholas Sansbury Smith’s story?
He did not do his homework with regard to having an operator as a protagonist. Totally missed or misinterpreted cultural flavor of the Army and the military in general.
What didn’t you like about Bronson Pinchot’s performance?
Did not know how to pronounce a number of words and acronyms. Whoever is directing his performance needs to check the colloquial pronunciation of military acronyms. Also, there were a number of normal words that were just blatantly mispronounced. More quality control is necessary.

Just too much power. There was just never any suspense because there was never any question who would win the day. Additionally, there really wasn't any sort of discernable story arc. Things just happened and kept happening.
