Historia
Miss Mildred Percy is a spinster. She does not dance, she has long stopped dreaming, and she certainly does not have adventures. That is, until her great uncle has the audacity to leave her an inheritance, one that includes a dragon’s egg. The egg—as eggs are wont to do—decides to hatch, and Miss Mildred Percy is suddenly thrust out of the role of “spinster and general wallflower” and into the unprecedented position of “spinster and keeper of dragons.” But England has not seen a dragon since…well, ever.

Sweet, light, fun story, as anticipated. Lovely narration. A few misread, mispronounced, or mis-written words, but very enjoyable overall. Relaxing and engaging. No real surprises.

Buy. Listen. Now. You’ll (probably) want to thank me.
Well written, well performed. Some of Wheaton’s accents made me cringe then giggle, but added up to a great, enjoyable interpretation!!

Historia
The Royal Bank of Ankh-Morpork is facing a crisis, and who better to manage it than the man who turned around Ankh-Morpork’s inefficient Post Office, former arch-swindler-turned-Postmaster General Moist von Lipwig. Lord Vetinari once again makes Moist an offer he can’t refuse: resuscitate the venerable Royal Mint. The bank has many problems: the chief cashier is almost certainly a vampire, the elderly chairman and her two loaded crossbows needs a daily walkie, there’s something strange happening in the cellar, and running the Royal Mint is costing a mint.

You can’t go wrong with Terry Pratchett. This story is great. Loveable characters, unexpected situations, great writing. The narration is spot on, too.

Like a car alarm, bagpipe music, or a doorbell ringing in the middle of the night, hearing this all-new audio edition of The Bad Beginning will only upset you. This unique multi-voice recording brings the first book in Lemony Snicket's alarming A Series of Unfortunate Events to such terrible life that no one should really have to experience it.

Excellent fun. More Tim Curry please!!!
Revisado: 12-13-23
One review mentions a previously recorded version (maybe no longer available?) with Tim Curry as narrator and all voices. That is what I had hoped for in this recording. It is a very fun book series that I remember reading with my children. And this recording is fine, I listened to the whole thing, and I enjoyed myself. But I would’ve enjoyed it so much more with minimal sound effects, and Tim Curry doing all the voices, particularly count Olaf. I hope audible will read some of these reviews, and try again!

Hmm. Not my favorite. It’s the characters, mostly.
Revisado: 11-14-23
The first half (or even 3/4 really) was very difficult for me to continue. I really wanted to stop, but I also hate wondering if the story improves? Jenny is immature… maybe she should be 23? Not mid thirties? I didn’t enjoy her character much. “Zo” kept bothering me because I felt like it should be read as “ZoE” not Zo, but really maybe that’s just her name. It makes her sound a little bit like a gypsy or a caricature. I did not enjoy the way the narrator interpreted her voice. Or maybe I didn’t enjoy the way the author developed her. I’m not sure which. (Honestly I felt that way about most of the characters, and it never really improved) I did enjoy the last quarter of the story more… but still didn’t love the characters. OR the narration. I did guess the twist very early on, but that doesnt usually bother me much. The getting there is still fun.
I really TRIED, it just isn’t my type of writing/narrating I guess. I hate giving a negative review. I do adore cozy mysteries and will say it was clean and not offensive (to me?) in any way. I loved the idea of having one author the center of the story although maybe it was a bit too in my face? I also adore little free libraries and like those being part of the story.
I am glad I listened to this one but won’t listen to it again, and won’t recommend it to my friends. I would read another of the author’s (paper) books and see what I think, though. It wasnt awful.

Historia
At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

A life changing story
Revisado: 08-04-23
I can’t think of other words to describe it. I heard it first 45-50 years ago, in part from the author’s own mouth, but had forgotten much of it. But hadn’t REALLY, because her story influenced the way I thought about things my whole life. I wish I had read the book again just before I married, and again and again as I raised my children.
A beautiful, deep, important narrative.
In this particular audio version, the narrator does a lovely job of bringing these words to life.

A good diversion, but not great
Revisado: 03-31-22
I enjoyed the story pretty well, but would prefer it wasnt written in the present tense? That was a little distracting. However, the narration just wasnt right for the story. I liked Melanie Ewbanks’ character voices, but the story narration itself and the main character voice both sounded stilted and unnatural. I nearly gave up on it, but stuck with it. Overall I did enjoy it but it would be hard for me to recommend a friend listen to it.
