Historia
For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

Fairly slow and mundane.
Revisado: 01-23-25
The story is about a former Army medic/EMT becoming a butler for a wizard. There is not much wizardry, and it’s very low key at best. It’s mostly about the Butler becoming a butler and developing loyalty for an old man who is exceedingly rich. It’s slow moving, discussing everyday activities. The antagonist is not very mean and starts out sympathetic. While the protagonist only has to fight and win a court hearing for the book to conclude. It’s a bit of a window into how the rich live, but I certainly expected more in the way of action or actual drama. It’s basically a plot for a soap opera.

Historia
Retired from his fighting days, John Perry is now village ombudsman for a human colony on distant Huckleberry. With his wife, former Special Forces warrior Jane Sagan, he farms several acres, adjudicates local disputes, and enjoys watching his adopted daughter grow up. That is, until his and Jane's past reaches out to bring them back into the game — as leaders of a new human colony, to be peopled by settlers from all the major human worlds, for a deep political purpose that will put Perry and Sagan back in the thick of interstellar politics, betrayal, and war.

Less impressive than his other books
Revisado: 01-20-24
I’m primarily a fan of Scalzi’s hard sci-fi style. Intergalactic wars are my thing. This book had a distinctively different feel. If I can be crude, it attempted to be touchy-feely, especially with the women characters. Unfortunately it came across as a bit cringeworthy. It’s clearly in Scalzi’s wheelhouse, just not as good as his others. And it’s a bit contrived when the colonists just show up at a new planet that’s not the one they were going to and had studied. There were several little plot turns like that that came across as unrealistic. Even with two bad guys in the sky…

Historia
Midway, the most famous naval battle in American history, has been the subject of many excellent books. However, none satisfactorily explain why the Japanese lost that battle, given their overwhelming advantage in firepower. While no book may ever silence debate on the subject, Midway Inquest answers the central mystery of the battle.

Tedious/Repetitive
Revisado: 12-18-22
Although this was a very detailed review of the battle of Midway with significant insight and surprising assertions backed up by new evidence, it was simply tiresome and repetitive. Points were made over and over and the prose was tedious. Unfortunately the author’s use of the word “moreover” became the focus of the listener, cringing each time it was used as the book wore on. It was as if the author had a word-of-the-day calendar and it was stuck on “moreover”, never a “further”, “also” or “in addition” in sight…
Good, detailed history of the battle, and the war in the Pacific…if you can make your way through it.

Historia
Pickett's Charge is a detailed analysis of one of the most iconic and defining events in American history. This book presents a much-needed fresh look, including the unvarnished truths and ugly realities, about the unforgettable story. With the luxury of hindsight, historians have long denounced the folly of Lee's attack, but this work reveals the tactical brilliance of a master plan that went awry. Special emphasis is placed on the common soldiers on both sides, especially the non-Virginia attackers outside of Pickett's Virginia Division.

Another Lee apologist
Revisado: 04-16-22
The book relayed some new facts about the detail level of Pickett’s charge. But it searches for a cause of the loss and a cause for the South’s loss of the war. It rightfully analyzes the battle as the last opportunity for the South to win. But what goes largely unstated is the North’s influence on the battle. It doesn’t account for the Northern cavalry repelling Stuart and for the remaining Northern force’s disposition had there been a breakthrough at the angle. It blames everyone, including God, for the battle’s loss, except for Lee. What is unsaid is that all the actions of an army are the complete and full responsibility of its commander. Excuses aside, Lee was wholly responsible for the loss. But southern sympathizers just will not accept the fact.

Historia
Is bourbon the quintessential American liquor? Bourbon is not just alcohol - the amber-colored drink is deeply ingrained in American culture and tangled in American history. From the early days of raw corn liquor to the myriad distilleries that have proliferated around the country today, bourbon is a symbol of the United States. This course traces bourbon's entire history, from the 1700s, with Irish, Scottish, and French settlers setting up stills and making distilled spirits in the New World, through today's booming resurgence.

Very interesting history
Revisado: 04-27-21
The book traces alcoholic spirits from biblical times to present in a 10 part lecture. It is an interesting topic but it takes about 5 lectures to even get to bourbon. It often assumes the listener has knowledge of the whiskey industry without foundation. And it tends to lump all whiskeys into bourbon. I think Scotch and Rye whiskeys are whiskey, not bourbon. But limiting the discussion to just bourbon would have made the lectures much shorter and less interesting. Good easy listen!
