Bad Casting listen to preview prior to buying
Revisado: 05-07-25
This is a southern the story and deserves a southern voice. The narrator has a wonderful voice, but sounds like an over acting Brandon Frazer. Just too intense, melodramatic and out of character. I put this on casting, this is not the man for the job, although I am sure he would be great in a different story. He misses the entire concept of an intelligent southern male. The melodic, leisurely pace of the South is missing and there is little change in voice or intonation for the different characters I can't imagine trying to make it through the 40 odd hours with this narrator. Again not for the lack of a wonderful voice and quality of diction, it's just not the right actor for the part.

Historia
A battalion of Serbs has been senselessly murdered in Kosovo, and the Green Berets stand accused. Now, Major Sean Drummond, a top Army lawyer, is assigned to investigate this unspeakable atrocity. But of course, no one saw anything. Drummond gets consistently suspicious depositions from all of the Green Berets: Supposedly pursued by Serb soldiers, they left the engagement with wounded Serbs firing at them, and no one can explain the number of deaths.

Good solid book but...
Revisado: 04-28-25
I really like the Drummond series, but I really wish the author would seriously reduce the attempted clever banter of the protagonist. Mr Haig should consider whether he is a comedian or a legal/military author. More times than not less is more. The protagonist's consent attempts at being witty often fail. When one tries too hard to be wittingly humorous the opposite effect is more often than not achieved. The scorn turns not only to the protagonist but also to the author. In my opinion it truly masks and undermines the well carved plot and subplots. It's like listening to a drunk uncle, an uncle who when sober is truly intelligent, witty and funny but drunk becomes a somewhat idiotic parody of himself.
This is so evident in Drummonds constant, unceasing, often obtuse and juvenile attempts at humorous analogies and metaphors. Mr Haig is an excellent writer. His plots are well thought out, his research appears deep and thorough and the above critique dulls both the protagonist as well as the author's well developed story.
Don't get me wrong, this is a great story and worth a listen. But the incessant attempts at witticisms are like wearing your most favorite, perfectly sized hiking boots with a pebble under your left sock at the tip of your big toe. Most of the time you can avoid pain by jiggling your foot a bit here and there, but you are constantly wondering how much of it you can take before you have to stop and remove the irritant. Oh that one could do that with Drummond's constant banter, it would make a much easier and more enjoyable walk with the author's story.

NOW THAT'S A WHO DONE IT!
Revisado: 04-02-25
More twists and turns than a 20' Anaconda sunning on a half submerged log.
One of the best "reads" I've experienced on Audible. With a nod to the female protagonist in "Bron", (The original Swedish/Danish and best version of the TV series "The Bridge") Sullivan portrays Sergeant Cross almost flawlessly. Full disclosure, I have worked as a specialist with special needs children, including students and a friend on the Spectrum, so this writing is rather dear to my heart and some might not be so inclined to enjoy the repartee of Cross where as I found it delightful.
Finlay Robertson (make note of this narrator) was close to perfection in his performance. Difficult to find a flaw. His characters' voices change subtly, yet distinctly and captures the emotion, and the lack thereof, of each and every character. A performance worthy of an Oscar.
The plot was superbly developed with enough characters to keep you wondering but not so many to confuse. It was a maze that led you here, then there and out again wondering where should your traveling should go next. You think the trap is closing and then it opens wide in another direction. Just well devised and written.
If you're looking or a good detective mystery that will take you on a wonderful and thrilling ride. Stick with it and you just may figure it out, but do not be so quick to commit as you will find plenty of road blocks that force you to take another look and you should look thoroughly l before you leap. Satisfying to the very end...especially the very end.
5 Stars across the board for all those responsible for this production.

Maggie leans against the apple tree, watching her fun-loving husband and darling children as her heart swells with pride. As the joyful party atmosphere disappears into the night, close by, the lifeless body of a young woman is pulled from a river. A good REAL "Who done it?"
Revisado: 03-31-25
This was a good "read", a real "Who done it?" A good story, very good writing. James Lailey, the performer was superlative and spot on with his reading. Not earth shaking, but it did keep me guessing a good bit with a few good twists and turns. I will definitely look for more of the author's work.

Not earth shaking, but a darn good 'READ"
Revisado: 03-16-25
I seldom finish a less than intriguing story and at first I had issues with the narration on this one. But as the story went on the narration and story line drew me in and the narration paired perfectly with the story. Really two stories in one this one kept my intention throughout. It was not an edge of your seat, or a "I can't wait to hear more..." Rather it became an old friend, something that brought a smile when I thought, "What should I listen to today...Oh yeah Law of Second Chances." At 12 hours long, it kept me engaged. This "read' won't rock your world, but if you give it a chance, I think you will find it a good solid legal story that when all is done you will think as I, that it was a well told story and you were grateful to the author for telling it.

When a worker goes missing from a North Sea gas platform, there seem to be just two possible explanations - it was a tragic accident or a suicide. It does not take Smith and his detectives long, however, to discover that James Bell led a double life back onshore in Kings Lake, a life complicated enough to make him at least one dangerous enemy. Before the case can be unraveled, Smith must get a new team working together.

Not my favorite Grainger book but still loved it
Revisado: 10-12-23
This one was a bit harder to follow but still a good “read”. DC Smith/ Grainger continues to entertain and make one laugh. Grainger’s sardonic wit, play on words, intelligence dark and at times loving humor shines through, with Gilbert Jackson’s consistently superb narration. Jackson, in my opinion, is one of the best story tellers in Audible’s library. Jackson is DC Smith and as always gives a superior performance in Luck and Judgement. Good show old man!
