Historia
Philip II is not only the most famous king in Spanish history, but one of the most famous monarchs in English history: the man who married Mary Tudor and later launched the Spanish Armada against her sister Elizabeth I. This compelling biography of the most powerful European monarch of his day begins with his conception (1526) and ends with his ascent to Paradise (1603), two occurrences surprisingly well documented by contemporaries. Eminent historian Geoffrey Parker draws on four decades of research on Philip as well as a recent, extraordinary archival discovery - a trove of 3,000 documents in vaults in New York City....

Enjoyable and Educational
Revisado: 01-31-24
Didn't expect this to be so interesting - I wanted to understand the history of the Americas better by learning more about Spain during the colonial period, but it turns out this is a story about the Reformation, Elizabethan England, and so much more.
Narrator was very capable and I thought fits quite well with the attitude that characterizes the book.
I started with this one for some reason, now I am looking forward to picking up the author's biography of Philip's father Charles.

Historia
In the first volume in the Penguin History of the United States series, edited by Eric Foner, Alan Taylor challenges the traditional story of colonial history by examining the many cultures that helped make America, from the native inhabitants from millennia past through the decades of Western colonization and conquest and across the entire continent, all the way to the Pacific coast.

America's bloody, brave, and tragic DNA
Revisado: 12-30-23
A history book that covers as much time as this one does (three centuries) should have a lot of gaps. This book really doesn't feel that way. The material is densely packed, but it still manages to be digestible, partly thanks to the neat structure of the book, in parts and chapters that cover different topics and geographical regions. It is a great introduction to the colonial americas and the impact the English, Spanish, French, Dutch, etc. had on the native American world (which was almost entirely obliterated), and on each other.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, although you may find it sobering (as I did) to learn about the bitter hardships and suffering people endured on American soil before the founding of the United States.
The audio performance is good as well.

Historia
For nearly 200 years huge wooden warships called “ships of the line” dominated war at sea and were thus instrumental in the European struggle for power and the spread of imperialism. Foremost among the great naval powers were Great Britain and France, whose advanced economies could support large numbers of these expensive ships. This book, the first joint history of these great navies, offers a uniquely impartial and comprehensive picture of the two forces - their shipbuilding programs, naval campaigns, and battles, and their wartime strategies and diplomacy.

Not about naval history
Revisado: 12-01-23
I was looking for a book about naval history. This is a book about european naval powers from 1650-1815, full stop. The first chapter does focus on naval topics but after that it's mostly names and dates. It hardly mentions navies at all and when it does it doesn't go into any depth. So I think the subtitle of the book is misleading.
Maybe the author should have focused on a particular engagement or a particular country's navy. That might have helped his insights hit the mark successfully.
The audio performance is full of mispronunciations that make you wonder how much care was taken in putting this on the market. I don't think it is wise to encourage this so I give it one star. Examples: duc "duck", compte "comptay", Cadiz rhyming with "fizz".

Blurs the line between history and story hour. I couldn't put it down. Coverage both broad and narrow and well performed by the reader. What a chestnut!

Historia
In this vivid and compelling narrative, the Seven Years' War - long seen as a mere backdrop to the American Revolution - takes on a whole new significance. Relating the history of the war as it developed, Anderson shows how the complex array of forces brought into conflict helped both to create Britain's empire and to sow the seeds of its eventual dissolution. Beginning with a skirmish in the Pennsylvania backcountry involving an inexperienced George Washington, the Iroquois chief Tanaghrisson, and the ill-fated French emissary Jumonville, Anderson reveals a chain of events that would lead to world conflagration.

Rewards a Determined Listener
Revisado: 11-14-23
It's a detailed account of a truly momentous conflict that is really hard not to get into if you have any love of history at all. There are some fascinating details, and riveting turns of fortune memorably told. The book and author has a good reputation as far as I can tell, so you can let the author spin his tale and not worry so much about the trustworthiness of the information.
A few bones to chew on: the language is somewhat dated and hard to follow if you are someone who likes to listen to audiobooks casually. You will HAVE to do some outside reading and study some maps. Even after that it can be frustrating at times. For one particularly egregious example, there is Latin that was an inscription on a medallion ordered struck by a general for his men - but the Latin isn't translated!... Terms of art, some quite dated I think, used for military and diplomacy are quite regularly bandied about by the author, for example "bringing a contract to foot" and suchlike, or various terms for different types of gun or old-fashioned bullet/projectile that, I'd assume, you probably don't immediately recognize, but would be able to understand after a quick rundown. Well, you're on your own I'm afraid.
Also, a personal opinion, but I found it to be pretty heavily weighted towards the British perspective and especially light in the Indian perspective, usually favoring a French vs. British framing. The emphasis you come to expect is usually the story of a man in the prime of his life in leadership. Everything else gets a little lost in the shuffle. I can't say more than this given what little I know about history.
The reading is good overall but same minor sorts of complaints.
Don't let me dissuade you, this is a great book/audiobook! You'll probably find yourself interested in learning more about other things going on during this period.

The principles of the French Revolution remain the only possible basis for a just society - even if, after more than 200 years, they are more contested than ever before. In A New World Begins, Jeremy D. Popkin offers a riveting account of the revolution that puts the listener in the thick of the debates and the violence that led to the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of a new society.

Historia
From one of the truly preeminent historians of our time, this is a landmark book chronicling the French Revolution. Simon Schama deftly refutes the contemporary notion that the French Revolution represented an uprising of the oppressed poor against a decadent aristocracy and corrupt court. He argues instead that the revolution was born of a rift among the elite over the speed of progress toward modernity and science, social and economic change.

Unacceptable technical issues
Revisado: 10-27-23
Other reviewers have pointed out the "skipping" which I first noticed in the chapter about debt of the French monarchy. This came just as I was growing accustomed to the very nasal accent of the reader (who reads so fast I had to slow speed to 0.8 and now he sounds drunk) and settling in for the long haul. Paying for a monthly Audible subscription and for what? I would expect better quality control and I want my credit back because I am not listening any further and barely made it through the first 2 hours.
