Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

New to Mick Herron and wondering why it took me so long.
Revisado: 12-28-20
Excellent plot, with nice underdog theme.
Most impressed with the quality of the language, and actually found myself writing down some of the more insightful phrases. Unexpectedly literate, considering the genre Read the author’s biography and realized why!

Good story but would be better if tightly edited
Revisado: 10-01-20
Three family members are listening simultaneously and we all agree. It’s a great story but it is simply too long. I fall asleep listening and wake up to find there’s still 22, 18, 11 hours left. At one point it was a toss up between going back a chapter or two and saving a considerable chunk of time. Under non-CoViD circumstances I would have given up and not bothered to finish but currently there’s more time available. The narrator was great, as usual. You would think this book might tempt listeners to explore the world or tarot and the zodiac, but I never want to hear another word in these topics. EVER.

Good enough but obviously aimed at female readers.
Revisado: 04-13-20
Story line strong enough but once I noticed that it is chic lit with blood, I became irritated.
Too many piecing blue eyes, too many irrational defenses of female points of view.
Over emphasis on ticking the the boxes for political correctness with little relevance to the story line.
Narrator did a good job with the voices of the characters. Sadly one was a grey mousey lady who was given a timorous voice. Totally appropriate but not pleasant.

Historia
She always went too far. DS Alexandra Cupidi has done it again. She should have learnt to keep her big mouth shut after the scandal that sent her packing - resentful teenager in tow - from the London Met to the lonely Kent coastline. Murder is different here, among the fens and stark beaches. She was the one who found the killers. The man drowned in the slurry pit had been herded there like an animal. He was North African, like many of the fruit pickers that work the fields. The more Cupidi discovers, the more she wants to ask - but these people are suspicious of questions.

Enjoyable book, well narrated. Plot has some glaring gaps, but made up for weaknesses with a thought provoking story line which made me want to do some background research. Immediately bought sequel.

Historia
A bracing, hypnotic, coming-of-age story about the bond of best friends, from the New York Times best-selling author of The Emperor's Children. Julia and Cassie have been friends since nursery school. They have shared everything, including their desire to escape the stifling limitations of their birthplace, the quiet town of Royston, Massachusetts. But as the two girls enter adolescence, their paths diverge and Cassie sets out on a journey that will put her life in danger and shatter her oldest friendship.

Meesud is a brilliant wordsmith but her storyline is too weak to support the complexity of the narrative.
Revisado: 05-11-18
Beautifully constructed prose, carefully crafted characters but a weak plot.
The first person narrative with hints of tragedy to come doesn’t live up to expectations. With the exception of one unexpectedly deserving character ( and his dog), the characters don’t get to act out their possible parts in the drama. Left a feeling of something missing.

Easy listening but fair scattering of scientific validation. Only criticism is there wasn't a final summary. Audio lectures don't allow for note taking, so summaries are crucial.
