Historia
Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

Sad, Violent, Impossible to Put Down
Revisado: 07-13-19
Started out like Harry Potter goes to college but quickly drags you in to the angst and hormone-filled world of late teen early twenties, which I had survived many years ago and have not looked back willingly. I am glad I read it, I particularly enjoyed how the author described characters which had both a good and noble side as well as a weak and destructive side.

My Favorite of the Audible Exclusives
Revisado: 06-16-19
This is the story of a holy man who lives on a mountaintop. He imparts wisdom to pilgrims who come to see him in a brusque and repetitive fashion. He becomes wildly popular. We learn the story of the lives of his teacher, his band of apostles, and of his chosen successor in poignant vignettes. In addition to enjoying the story, I found myself touched and spiritually uplifted. Excellent team of narrators make each character come alive.

After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. Could Not Put It Down
Revisado: 06-16-19
A breathlessly told series of struggles in space featuring humans and their computer. Very exciting. Pretty violent from time to time. Tries to deal with the nature of reality in a world ever more dependent on artificial intelligence and simulation. About halfway through there is a puzzling leap into a new story line which never made sense to me. I played the transition over a few times to make certain I had not accidentally skipped some text. After that the story careens more seamlessly into new places before looping back home.

Historia
When wealthy and popular crusader and reformer Lester Pierce is gunned down in front of his Park Avenue residence, the public outcry forces the NYPD to restructure its homicide department. As the deceased was highly critical of Inspector Lionel Cramer, the longtime head of homicide is temporarily relieved of his badge. But it seems Cramer was not just a scapegoat. He was seen dining in Little Italy with mob kingpin Ralph Mars. If Cramer's provisional replacement, Captain George Rowcliff, becomes permanent, PI Nero Wolfe's future dealings with the force will be much compromised.

One of The Best
Revisado: 04-25-19
From Goldsborough or Stout! The author deftly mixes up roles using our favorite characters. Menus may not be as outrageous and Wolfe seems stuck in time as references to a particular period are lacking. The ways the characters demonstrate respect and even affection for each other rings through. Great listen!

Here there are no heroes or villains, only those willing to do what's necessary to survive. The New Earth Tribunal, a powerful religious faction, has risen to rule the Circuit. They believe a Spirit within the Earth will one day appear and welcome humanity back home.

Brutal But Gripping
Revisado: 09-21-18
I stated listening when we were staying in an electronically isolated cabin. Found the brutality of the main characters off-putting. Kept on trying to figure out who were the “good” and “bad” ones—never really did figure that out. Reminded me of “Game of Thrones” in some ways, although even more so were the main characters flaws and strengths balanced. Science seemed weak, never did figure out how the Circuit worked. Kept me entertained and as time went on held me captive.

Will Not Disappoint
Revisado: 12-01-17
Here is what I love about Dan Brown: Convoluted mysteries, beautiful settings, old professor flirts with beautiful intelligent side kick, fantastically detailed research, old guy wins at least one fight/flight using intelligence and physical prowess preserved through swimming. Here’s what I could do without: graphic murders, occasionally ham handed prose. How many times can one of the characters stare on confusion over a discovery? Nice diversion from infinitely more scary daily news.

Shamelessly sappy.
Revisado: 08-15-17
It took me until my dotage to allow myself to read this story. The courageous red haired girl orphan wins the heart of an elderly woman and her brother. The pictures of life on Prince Edward Island in horse and buggy days, the acceptance of the girl into the small town and her new family, and the usual struggles of life provide a warm journey away from today's cares.

Historia
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, he discovers that Quine's disappearance is no coincidence. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published, it would ruin lives - meaning that almost everyone in his life would have motives to silence him.

Revisado: 06-14-16
The author once again grabs your attention and holds it to the end. The relationship between Robin and Cormorant seems at first to disappear behind a storm of vulgarity and the repeated graphic description of a horrible murder, but the persistent reader is rewarded with a satisfying conclusion.

Historia
An historic literary event: the publication of a newly discovered novel, the earliest known work from Harper Lee, the beloved, best-selling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic To Kill a Mockingbird. Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014.

But this is an excellent book. The characters, flashbacks, story line all are complex and satisfying. The affectionate picture of a time and place that I observed from afar gave me great insight. Recommend without reservation.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Surprisingly Fun
Revisado: 08-01-15
Thought I was listening to the usual space opera. Then realized it was a hybrid of stuff I normally avoid: engineering, math, one man's quest to survive, peppered with the F bomb. In spite of all these negatives, I was shamelessly won over by the personalities and drama. Once you get past the first chapter or two, it was hard to put down.
