Historia
The first of Homer's great epic poems, the Iliad portrays the final days of the Trojan war. The Iliad has stood the test of time and is still one of (it not the) best depictions of ancient warfare. It is an essential precursor to the infamous journey of Odysseus. Translated by Stanley Lombardo.

The Best Audio Version of the Iliad
Revisado: 01-20-21
This is easily the best audio rendition of the Iliad if for no other reason than it is not read in the hideously performative "received pronunciation" like the others. These works of classical literature deserve to be read in the voice of the people, not that of stuffy academia. Additionally, Lombardo's translation is superb. I found myself pausing the audio occasionally in order to digest his brilliant interpretation of Homer's words

Historia
Most historians credit the city-state of Florence as the place that started and developed the Italian Renaissance, a process carried out through the patronage and commission of artists during the late 12th century. If Florence is receiving its due credit, much of it belongs to the Medicis, the family dynasty of Florence that ruled at the height of the Renaissance. The dynasty held such influence that some of its family members even became pope.

I have to agree with the other review. The pronunciation of names is so blatantly incorrect that it makes it impossible to listen to. I gave up when the narrator pronounced Bologna as Bo-Lowge-Na. It's also read incredibly fast making any transmission of useful information practically zero.

Historia
When people think of ancient Italy, the Romans are usually the first and last people that come to mind, but long before Rome was built by Latin-speaking people, the culture of Italy was dominated by the Etruscans. Although the Etruscans may not comprise the core of most histories of the ancient Mediterranean, they exerted a profound influence on the region from the 8th-5th centuries BCE that continued to resonate for centuries after as the Romans carried on many of their traditions.

Greek Descent?
Revisado: 03-07-20
The content overall is fine but there's a glaring error in the very first line. The author refers to the Etruscans as being of Greek descent, they're not. The culture is Italic and there are several theories as to where they originally came from, but in none of them is it Greece. The author knows this because he talks about it in the rest of the book and nauseum. How did such a glaring error get past an editor?

"Apollo's history is a confusing one," said the renowned poet and mythologist Robert Graves. This notion is also illustrated in a quote from the sixth century BCE Homeric Hymn to Apollo, which gives the listener a brief glimpse into the confusion surrounding Apollo's multi-faceted nature.

Awful narrator, not what I expected.
Revisado: 07-23-19
I was expecting a history of the worship of Apollo and his evolution from other deities and cultures, not just a mythological origin story. Additionally, the narrator's accent is incorrigible. It's so cartoonishly upper class British, that it sounds ridiculous. More colloquial speech is much more suitable for narration.

The first volume in Gods, Man, & War, Gods introduces the listener to some of the critical issues that are foundational to an intelligent and enlightened grasp of the revelations that will follow in the next two volumes. There is another Force in the universe of our Reality, another context for comprehending what has been going on for millennia and especially in the last 70 years.

Endless rambling
Revisado: 03-11-19
Stream of consciousness incoherent rambling. The first chapter was really good though. Everything else is awful.
