Historia
Minnesota, 1977. For the teens of one close-knit community, summer means late-night swimming parties at the quarry, the county fair, and venturing into the tunnels beneath the city. But for two best friends, it’s not all fun and games. Heather and Brenda have a secret. Something they saw in the dark. Something they can’t forget. They’ve decided to never tell a soul. But their vow is tested when their friend disappears—the second girl to vanish in a week. And yet the authorities are reluctant to investigate.

So well written.
Revisado: 11-09-23
The main character is an older than her years, but when you read of how she is parentified and spousalized it’s not far fetched to believe.
I grew up in the late 70s and it was such a blast back to that past. I’d forgotten the misogyny and careless chauvinism.
Great story, unexpected twists and celebrates the friendships and resiliency of women.

Loved the politics
Revisado: 07-16-22
I had to write a review just because so many readers gave the book low star ratings simply because Connolly clearly can’t stand Trump. Obviously I agree with him. But what I find interesting is how the pro-Trump reviewers that knock every book that knocks Trump don’t show up in reviews for other books that include negative politics. There’s something about Trump that they won’t allow any criticism - he’s a politician and fair game for any author.
I enjoyed the legal politics and learning about how the law works - very discouragingly.

So when she and her best friend stumble upon a “help wanted” post to run a coffee shop in the Scottish Highlands, they apply on a whim. Who knows? Maybe traveling to a new place is just what she needs to figure out her next move. When the friends arrive in the tiny idyllic town of Corsekelly, they instantly fall for the gorgeous Highland landscape and friendly townspeople. But Bonnie finds a less-than-warm welcome in Rowan MacGregor, the rugged local handyman.

I. Just. Can’t.
Revisado: 07-04-22
I’m an hour in and I just can’t finish this slop. The main character is too stupid to care about. She’s immature, overly dramatic and the writing is too over the top “cute” and self indulgent. Bonnie is a typical ugly American with no common sense - “half ten” is obviously 10:30, she’s abrasive, insensitive and childish.
She didn’t even bother to learn a thing about Scotland or the town where they are going to live.
And no one would serve haggis to an American whose never been in Scotland.
A book shouldn’t be this annoying.

Twice as long as it needed to be.
Revisado: 06-23-22
Everyone has an opinion so take mine for what it’s worth. But the story just drags on and on. And the voice actors for Nora and Cooper are pretty awful - they sound like they’re reading it, not acting it. And in the novella of Nora and Cooper different actors played them - the ones who play Beau and Palmer in this book - why change actors in the sequel?! It doesn’t make sense.
Also, it’s like the author doesn’t like the word “smile,” all the couple smirk, just smirked as I was writing this. 🙄
It’s just not worth a credit, so glad I got it free through my kindle unlimited.

Really bad. Seriously.
Revisado: 04-05-22
This sounded like a literate person who really wanted to write a book and his uncle runs the publishing house.
I’ve watched, read and listened to more than a 1000 police/mystery/espionage shows and books in my lifetime. So you learn a lot from the research those writers do. Examples here would be spoilers, but there isn’t a single common sense mention of forensics, spy craft, or knowledge of the law.
I had to listen to to it at 1.3 speed just to satisfy my curiosity about where this was all going. Really unsatisfying and a true waste of time when there are so many well-written books, by authors who do the work.

Predictable
Revisado: 01-17-22
The story was way too long, the ending predictable, the female empowerment twisted and shows the author doesn’t get the concept.
Narrator was great, although at times it was difficult to tell who was who.
I read a lot of police procedural, so you learn a little about the law, this author didn’t do her homework.
There are several inconsistencies and events where you have to suspend credibility.
I wouldn’t recommend it, but it’s intriguing enough once you start it to finish it.

Psychologist and criminologist Dr. Gretchen White is a specialist in antisocial personality disorders and violent crimes. She’s helped solve enough prominent cases for detective Patrick Shaughnessy that her own history is often overlooked: Gretchen is an admitted sociopath once suspected of killing her aunt. Shaughnessy still thinks Gretchen got away with murder. It’s not going to happen again.

Stretches incredulity
Revisado: 10-07-21
First off, the families wealth and prestige would not exempt them from laws around physical abuse. Secondly, the author only has a Wikipedia knowledge of sociopathy. The male lead was pathetic and unlikeable. I liked the partnership between White and Marconi. The writing was lazy and the story contrived.
Narrators were great.

Sisters Amanda Foster and Erin Turner have little in common except the childhood bedroom they once shared and the certainty each feels that her way of life is best. Amanda follows the rules - at the school where she works; in her community; and as a picture-perfect daughter, wife, and mother-to-be. Erin follows her heart - in love and otherwise - living a bohemian lifestyle on a shoestring budget and honoring her late father’s memory with a passion for music and her fledgling bath-products business.

Where do I begin to say how much I hated this book..
Revisado: 08-28-21
…..Characters? Whiny, shallow, unevolved, superficial.
Story? I suppose the main character’s husband being a narcissist and leaving her for another woman when she is pregnant is supposed to be some sort of “I shall overcome” story. But all I could think is that there are people out there with real problems.
This type of book is only good if the author takes trivial life events and elevates them with extraordinary writing. That didn’t happen.
The five-star reviews are mind boggling.
The mother is a self-centered woman who only cares what other people think. The main character is pretty much the same. The way they worry about the neighbors knowing their business makes you think of some regency novel where reputation is everything.
The sister was the only interesting character, and her new boyfriend - but his part was small.
I had to listen to this on 1.2 speed just to get it over with (for some reason I can’t just toss a book).
Don’t waste your time or money.

UGH
Revisado: 08-20-21
I hated this book. I get curious about how books end so I listened to it at 1.3 speed just to get through it.
The main character was just a whiny, humorless, self-indulgent ingrate.
Phillip is basically a narcissist dressed up as a humanitarian.
Nothing about her indicates why two successful, intelligent men would fall in love with her. Even the men were one-dimensional.
It was horrid and I’m glad I didn’t pay for it.
