Historia
Ask any self-respecting Louisianan who makes the best gumbo and the answer is universal: "Momma." The product of a melting pot of culinary influences, gumbo, in fact, reflects the diversity of the people who cooked it up: French aristocrats, West Africans in bondage, Cajun refugees, German settlers, Native Americans-all had a hand in the pot. What is it about gumbo that continues to delight and nourish so many? And what explains its spread around the world? A seasoned journalist, Ken Wells sleuths out the answers.

Brings back memories
Revisado: 01-16-20
My Cajun grandmother taught me to make gumbo. This really brought back many memories. I also leaned much that I didn't know about gumbo and Louisiana.
The narrator was perfect.

Historia
In March 1980, a napping volcano awoke. Two months later, the mountain roared. Author Richard Waitt was one of the first to arrive following the mountain's early rumblings. A geologist with intimate knowledge of Mount St. Helens, Waitt delivers a detailed and accurate chronicle of events. His eruption story unfolds through unforgettable, riveting narratives - the heart of a masterful chronology that also delivers engrossing science, history, and journalism.

Amazing compilation of First Person Accounts
Revisado: 12-27-19
I recently visited Mount St Helens for the first time, and was left with a desire to know the stories of the people who lived through the eruption at close quarters as well as those who didn't escape.
This is exactly what I was looking for when I started looking for a audiobook to listen to about the eruption of Mount St Helens. I actually lived through these events as a child living in the Yakima Valley at the time. I had a general knowledge of the events, but this book really lays it out in detail, from the people on the scene at the time. The narrator does a great job of conveying the mood, and has a great storytelling voice. I plan on listening to this many times over the years.

Good, but not great
Revisado: 04-08-19
This could have been one of the greats, but it needs fact-checking. There are enough factual errors that I caught to be irritating, but I did like the format.

Historia
In the spring of 2010 the world watched for weeks as more than 200 million gallons of crude oil billowed from a hole three miles deep in the Gulf of Mexico. Warnings of various and imminent environmental consequences dominated the news. Deepwater drilling - largely ignored or misunderstood to that point - exploded in the American consciousness in the worst way possible. Fire on the Horizon, written by veteran oil rig captain John Konrad and longtime Washington Post journalist Tom Shroder, recounts in vivid detail the life of the rig itself, from its construction to its improbable journey in the year 2000 to its end.

Some inaccurate information, but a great book.
Revisado: 10-13-16
I loved this book. there is some inaccurate information, especially around the BOP failure, and Cajun name pronunciation is butchered, but overall, I loved it.

Historia
Before becoming an instructor in the Navy's Topgun program, Dave "Bio" Baranek was just another kid with a dream. Upon graduating from college, he joined the Navy with the goal of becoming a fighter pilot. But, his eyesight waning, he knew that he would never be able to reach that goal. Undaunted, he plowed ahead and found his niche as a radar intercept operator in the backseat of the sleek, new Grumman F-14 Tomcat.

Overall good, but narrator doesn't fit well.
Revisado: 08-30-16
I enjoyed the story very much, but the narrator for Top Gun Days would have been a better fit for this story.
