Historia
Drawn by a fascination with Egypt's rich history and culture, Peter Hessler moved with his wife and twin daughters to Cairo in 2011. He wanted to learn Arabic, explore Cairo's neighborhoods, and visit the legendary archaeological digs of Upper Egypt. After his years of covering China for The New Yorker, friends warned him Egypt would be a much quieter place. But not long before he arrived, the Egyptian Arab Spring had begun, and now the country was in chaos.

Fabulous book!! Inspired me to read all his books!
Revisado: 07-03-23
I loved this book!! I was so impressed by this book and the author that I bought all 5 of his books and have listened to all of them in succession since in the last 6 months. I am so grateful for the thoughtful, personal writing and humanist telling of world events. Blending history current and past is a trademark of all Peter Hessler books and this book exemplifies that quality of his writing. I couldn’t put it down and frequently found myself sitting in my car at the end of my commute to void “putting down” the book!

Peter Hessler’s writing is fantastic. This was another incredibly interesting and easy listen. His books are personal and humanistic, while educating the listener, transporting you across time and the Pacific Ocean. I loved this book so so much with journey to three different areas of China, all connected with driving. I am so grateful to have found this author and these books!

Historia
When Rosamond Halsey Carr first arrived in Africa, she didn't realize that she would spend the rest of her life there. As a young fashion illustrator living in New York City in the 1940s, she seemed the least likely candidate for such a life of adventure. But marriage to a hunter-explorer took her to what was then the Belgian Congo, and divorce left her determined to stay on in neighboring Rwanda as the manager of a flower plantation.

Interesting, Insightful, more nuanced than other reviewers said
Revisado: 04-10-22
Thoroughly interesting. I could not ‘put it down’. The author has lived a unique life and while I wish the book was longer and more detailed, I feel it does tell a full story about the events the author lived through from her point of view. Yes, it is the account of an expat in a colonial society, but this is recent history and I feel it is unfair to fault the author for being honest about her place in that society, especially given the obvious care and attention given to providing her views on local context and local people. This was a delightful read and an interesting memoir of a full life that very few others shared.

Soaring ambition. Unwavering integrity. Billie Joe Armstrong isn’t the first punk to negotiate mainstream success, but he might be its most undisguised example. In Welcome to my Panic, Green Day’s iconic front man holds nothing back as he tracks listeners though his deeply personal and artistic journey in raw detail. Matching his emotional storytelling with new, exclusive, recordings of Green Day’s biggest hits, Armstrong chronicles the seminal moments in his life: the trauma and triumphs that have come to define him.

I wish it was longer!
Revisado: 05-01-21
It’s always nice to hear the story behind the music. As a fan I think what is still relevant for me about Green Day is just what he said in the conclusion: the vulnerability and the naïveté of all of our shared experience especially of remembering when we were young and first heard their music. I’m very ready for their tour this summer, now more so than I already was. This was a nice easy happy listen and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would’ve enjoyed more :) Also I’m now conflicted with my role as a fan wanting to go to these large shows and the times I’ve stood in the line hoping to get an autograph. I’d seen that as a sign of respect and caring to communicate “I’m willing to spend my money and my time on your art.” Hearing some of the anxiety legitimately behind the music now feels like maybe what’s more respectful to do is just listen to albums at home. I’m grateful for the sharing in this little audible special, just as I am in their music.

Historia
Most children go through a dinosaur phase. Learning all the tongue-twisting names, picking favourites based on ferocity, armour, or sheer size. For many kids this love of ‘terrible lizards’ fizzles out at some point between starting and leaving primary school. All those fancy names slowly forgotten, no longer any need for a favourite. For all those child dino fanatics who didn’t grow up to become paleontologists, dinosaurs seem like something out of mythology. They are dragons, pictures in books, abstract, other, extinct.

Revisado: 11-20-18
I love Prof. Greenberg’s courses. They are engaging and highly educational. He is an animated and easy to listen to teacher who keeps the content easily understandable while still chock full of in-depth info. This course in particular was a true joy not in small part because of the interwoven music. I will listen to this again and again! There is so much to learn that it cannot all be internalized during only one less. Truly exceptional course from a GREAT teacher.

Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

Loved every minute of this course! Professor Brier is conversational, very easy to listen and learn from, and makes this course not only chock full of in depth content but a true thrill to listen to. I could listen for a hundred more hours without hesitation. This course covers broad strokes and dives into detail on select items. As a long time appreciator of ancient Egypt I was very glad to hear in depth analysis while still covering basics....anyone with any prior knowledge of Egypt will enjoy this course!

Imagine raising an orphaned bear cub, carefully reintroducing her to the wild, then being welcomed back, almost daily, to observe her wild world for more than 17 years. Imagine visiting her in her feeding spots, watching her with her mates and her young, peering into her den, and, over time, observing the lives of all the other wild bears in her territory and surrounding ones. That is what happened to Ben Kilham.

Lovely, Inspiring
Revisado: 05-10-17
What did you love best about In the Company of Bears?
I learned so much about bears. They are inspiring creatures and the complex relationships (between the bears and between the author and bears) were a huge surprise. I love wildlife and animal behavioral books, so this book was an easy sell for me. However I think anyone would enjoy this book. This book is written in a nice light, easy to ready style with a strong story of the author throughout. That keeps the book from being too fact heavy/hard to read. The book really is a story book with some scientific tid-bits thrown in.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Squirty the Bear.
What does George Backman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narration is easy to listen to.
