Allison Knocks Kills It Again!

I love everything Allison Raskin does, but this was an excellent examination of love, relationship, and commitment that I really needed to hear (especially as I enter a new relationship and also my 30s). Allison’s voice has truly become such a comfort to me. I am certain this will be a book I come back to again.

Beautiful, as expected

I have read and re-read The House in the Cerulean Sea many, many times now. Getting a sequel was so unexpected and so welcome. Getting to live in this world a little longer and getting to see the growth and challenges of the characters was a true joy. I know it’s fictional, but it gives me so much hope that we, too, can live loud, queer, happy lives in a world that has not always been (and sometimes still isn’t) welcoming.

Permanently changed my brain chemistry

I’ve been thinking about this book nonstop since Ifirst heard a quote from it on TikTok. I read it once a couple months ago, and I just re-read it again. Zevin’s observations about love and the nature of relationships really resonated with me, and while I know nothing about video games and don’t particularly care for them, I think that, narratively, that world of technology and storytelling worked beautifully. 10/10 will absolutely read again.

A delight

Weird, funny, and earnest, “How to Be a Normal Person,” had me grinning and cringing (but not too much) in the best way. Both Gus and Casey were deeply relatable. The performer also just had this particular and perfect inflection when saying “What the Hell” and “oh my God.” Cannot recommend this enough, especially for asexual representation!

Delightfully cute!

This book was so cute! Sometimes you just want a lighthearted, easy-to-read, uplifting sapphic book, and this truly fit the bill. We stan open and honest communication in this house. This book had it all: excellent friend dynamics, non-traditional but supportive family dynamics, and a relationship (after all the fake dating stuff) built on patience and vulnerability. I hope that any teens who read this come out of it understanding that if they want to have a successful relationship, those hard conversations are the way to start.

Came forward the chaotic bi stayed for the love

Oh, man. This book is going to be one that I come back to many times. I absolutely LOVED the character of Evelyn Hugo. Not only because she is a fellow chaotic bisexual (and she SAID IT), but also because she is such a complicated, juicy character. I am always fascinated by women who are perceived as villains because they use the powers they have access to in this complicated and patriarchal world, and Evelyn wielded her power masterfully. I loved that the story was told through both Evelyn’s perspective and the perspective of Monique who adds to the story by sharing her own perception of Evelyn. It was a beautiful story about love and loss and agency and making complicated choices.
If they don’t cast a Latina as Evelyn, I will riot.

Someone once said of this book, "It's sapphic, and it slaps." They were right. The yearning alone made me lose my damn mind. Exactly what I want out of a book about fire Elsa and the horse girl self-insert I always dreamed of.
